Our verdict on ShadeLend

5.0/10

ShadeLend suits DeFi users who want to borrow a stablecoin against crypto collateral on Secret Network and are comfortable with privacy-focused tooling. Its main strength is the clear loop of minting SILK and earning yield from liquidations. The main caveat is thin public information: public sources used here list no audits, no published fee schedule and no total value locked figure. Check the audit reports, loan terms and collateral ratios in the app before committing funds.

What is ShadeLend?

ShadeLend is the lending product in Shade Protocol, a DeFi project built on Secret Network. Its main function is borrowing: users mint SILK, a stablecoin issued in the Shade ecosystem, by locking other crypto assets as collateral. The protocol's own description says it accepts a variety of tokens as collateral.

The second function is yield for SILK holders. Users can deposit SILK into a pool, and the pool earns yield from liquidated collateral. That makes the yield tied to borrower defaults and liquidations rather than to a fixed rate.

Shade Protocol presents itself as a privacy-focused suite. Its homepage describes on-chain data protection, open-source applications and a range of products including swaps, bridging and bonds. ShadeLend sits within that wider suite.

Several third-party write-ups describe ShadeLend in similar terms. They agree that it is a borrowing protocol on Secret Network with a SILK pool. Details such as current loan volume and collateral list change over time, so readers should check the app for live figures.

How ShadeLend works

ShadeLend is a collateralised borrowing protocol. A borrower deposits an accepted crypto asset and mints SILK, a stablecoin. The amount of SILK that can be minted is limited by the value of the collateral, so the loan is over-collateralised. This is the usual model for crypto lending, where a buffer protects lenders if prices fall.

If the value of the collateral falls below the required threshold, the position can be liquidated. The collateral is sold or transferred to cover the debt. Under the protocol's description, liquidated collateral flows to SILK depositors who have supplied the pool, which is how that pool earns yield.

Because the yield comes from liquidations, depositors are exposed to the market moves that trigger them. Quiet markets produce little yield, while sharp drops can produce more liquidations. The protocol runs on Secret Network, which is the base layer for the Shade suite and the source of its privacy features.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear core purpose: borrow SILK against crypto collateral, and earn yield by supplying SILK to a pool.
  • Built on Secret Network, which the project describes as a privacy-preserving base layer.
  • Part of a wider suite with open-source code and a published grants programme.
  • Yield in the SILK pool is linked to liquidations rather than to a purely promotional rate.

Watch out for

  • DefiLlama lists zero audits for the protocol, and the project does not name a completed third-party audit.
  • Liquidation mechanics, collateral list and loan terms are not spelled out in the material available, so readers have to check the app for specifics.
  • Privacy depends on the Secret Network environment, which is a smaller ecosystem than the largest EVM chains.
  • SILK is a stablecoin that depends on collateral and pool design. Its peg and redemption behaviour under stress are not documented publicly.
  • Total value locked is not available in the data used for this review, so the protocol's current size is unclear.

ShadeLend fees

Fees for ShadeLend are not published publicly used for this review. Interest or borrowing costs, liquidation penalties and any pool fees would appear in the app's loan and pool screens before a transaction. Readers should check those screens and the project's documentation for current terms, because they can change.

No native fee schedule was found in the material reviewed, so the fees score is left null.

Is ShadeLend safe?

Audits: DefiLlama lists zero audits for ShadeLend. Public sources used for this review do not name a completed third-party smart-contract audit, so readers should look for the audit reports the project publishes before relying on the contracts.

Custody and counterparty risk: ShadeLend is non-custodial in the sense that users hold their own wallets and sign transactions. Smart-contract bugs, oracle failures and collateral price crashes can still cause losses. Liquidation can happen quickly when prices move.

Regulatory status: the project does not describe a licence or regulatory approval for SILK or ShadeLend. Stablecoin rules differ by country, and the project does not publish a legal opinion in the material reviewed.

Incident history: no specific incident was found used for this review. This does not mean none occurred, so check the project's own channels and independent reporting. Crypto lending is for adults only, and borrowers should set limits on what they risk.

7 steps

How to get started with ShadeLend

  1. 1

Check that using crypto lending services is legal where you live, and that you meet the age rules that apply.

  2. 2

Go to the official website at shadeprotocol.io and follow the link to the app.

  3. 3

Set up a wallet that supports the Secret Network.

  4. 4

Acquire the collateral asset the app accepts and any SCRT needed for transaction fees.

  5. 5

Open a loan, review the collateral ratio and liquidation threshold shown in the app, and mint SILK.

  6. 6

Monitor your collateral ratio, since a falling price can trigger liquidation.

  7. 7

Repay the loan to unlock your collateral, and read the documentation before depositing SILK into a pool.

Who ShadeLend is for

ShadeLend is best suited to experienced DeFi users who already hold assets on Secret Network and want to borrow SILK without selling their holdings. It is less suited to beginners, because liquidation mechanics and collateral management need careful attention. Users who value on-chain privacy may find the Secret Network setting relevant, though privacy does not remove market or contract risk.

ShadeLend FAQs

What is ShadeLend?

ShadeLend is a borrowing protocol. You lock an accepted crypto asset as collateral and mint SILK, a stablecoin issued within the Shade Protocol suite. Repaying the loan lets you retrieve the collateral.

How do ShadeLend depositors earn yield?

According to the protocol's description, users can deposit SILK into a pool. Yield in that pool comes from liquidated collateral rather than from a fixed interest rate. Returns therefore depend on how often liquidations happen.

Does ShadeLend charge fees?

Public sources reviewed do not list a fee schedule, interest rate or liquidation penalty. Check the app's loan screens before borrowing to see the terms that apply.

Is ShadeLend private?

The protocol runs on Secret Network, which is designed to keep transaction and contract data private. This is what the project means by private DeFi. Privacy does not remove smart-contract or collateral risk.

What are the main risks of using ShadeLend?

Gambling is not relevant to ShadeLend. Borrowing against crypto collateral carries liquidation risk if the collateral value falls. Only borrow what you can repay, and check that using crypto financial services is legal where you live. Crypto lending is for adults, and responsible-use limits are worth setting for any leveraged position.
