Our verdict on Moonwell

5.5/10

Moonwell suits DeFi users who already hold assets on Base or Optimism and want to lend or borrow without a bank. Its main strength is the core lending market on low-cost networks and a clear app for supplying and borrowing. The main caveat is that the sources do not publish audit results, fee schedules or regulatory status, and one third-party report says its card programme has closed. Read the market rates and risk settings before committing funds.

What is Moonwell?

Moonwell is a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol. Its public description calls it an open app for lending and borrowing that aims to make financial tools easy to use. Public reporting place it on Base and Optimism, and a third-party guide also lists Moonbeam as a supported network.

The core product is the lending market. Users supply tokens to earn interest, or post collateral and borrow other tokens. The WELL token is associated with the project and is listed on several exchanges, though the sources do not explain its full role in the protocol.

The project has had a card product. One third-party write-up reports that the card stopped issuing in July 2026 and was switched off in September, so it should be treated as closed. The lending protocol itself is not reported as shut down in the sources reviewed.

How Moonwell works

Moonwell is a lending pool. Lenders deposit a token into a market, and the smart contract pays them interest that borrowers pay to use that token. Borrowers can take loans without a credit check, but they must lock up more value as collateral than they borrow. The required collateral ratio is set per asset.

Rates move with supply and demand. When many people want to borrow a token, its borrow rate goes up, and the supply rate for lenders rises with it. When lending is high and borrowing is low, rates fall. The app shows current figures for each market.

Because the contracts are automated, a borrower whose collateral falls below the required level can be liquidated, meaning another user repays part of the debt and takes some of the collateral at a discount. This keeps the pool solvent but means borrowers need to watch their position closely.

Key features

01

Supply and borrow markets

Users can supply assets to lending markets to earn interest, or borrow other assets against collateral.

02

Multi-chain deployment

The protocol is deployed on Base, Optimism and Moonbeam, so users can pick a network that suits their wallet and fees.

03

04

Simple app design

The project describes its interface as designed for ease of use, aiming to make lending tools simple for everyday users.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Offers the core DeFi lending and borrowing functions on several networks, including Base.
  • Its public description focuses on a simple, intuitive interface for lending and borrowing.
  • WELL is listed on several major exchanges, which makes the token easier to buy than many small DeFi tokens.
  • Users can compare markets across networks without having to use a centralized lender.

Watch out for

  • One third-party write-up reports that the Moonwell card programme stopped issuing cards in July 2026 and was switched off in September, so the card is not a current product.
  • The WELL token is volatile. One price snippet reported a 24-hour drop of more than 15%, and the sources give conflicting prices and market figures.
  • Not every exchange supports the networks WELL runs on. A user thread reports that Crypto.com did not support the Base network, so buyers may need another venue.
  • As a DeFi lending protocol, it carries smart-contract risk. The sources reviewed do not list audit reports or past incident history.
  • The sources reviewed do not describe the team, governance structure or licensing, which makes it harder to judge who is accountable for the protocol.

Moonwell fees

Moonwell's fee and interest-rate schedules are not set out in the sources reviewed. Rates for each market are shown inside the app, and they can change with supply and demand. Check the rate and any protocol charges on the market page before you deposit or borrow.

Is Moonwell safe?

Moonwell is a non-custodial protocol, so users generally hold control of their assets through their own wallet. The main risk is the smart contracts. A bug or exploit could lead to losses, and the sources reviewed do not list audit reports, bug bounties or a past incident record. Check the project's own documentation for these details.

The project's own search snippet says it prioritises security given past DeFi exploits, but that is a claim, not an independent assessment. Counterparty risk also matters: if the WELL token falls sharply, the value of any rewards or collateral tied to it can fall with it.

The sources reviewed do not state Moonwell's licensing or regulatory status. Users should check whether DeFi lending is legal and permitted where they live. This product is for adults. Use only money you can afford to lose, and consider the risks of borrowing, which can lead to liquidation.

How to get started with Moonwell

  1. 1

Choose a wallet that supports Base, Optimism or Moonbeam, and confirm the network you plan to use.

  2. 2

Buy the asset you want to lend on that same network, or move it there with a bridge you trust.

  3. 3

Connect your wallet to the official Moonwell app and check that the URL matches the project's published address.

  4. 4

Review each market's supply rate, borrow rate and collateral settings.

  5. 5

Supply assets to earn interest, or supply collateral before borrowing against it.

  6. 6

Keep track of your borrowing position and repay or add collateral if market prices move against you.

Who Moonwell is for

Moonwell is best for crypto holders who are comfortable with self-custody wallets and want to earn interest or borrow against tokens on Base, Optimism or Moonbeam. It is less suited to people who want a fully regulated product, a card, or a fixed-rate loan.

Moonwell FAQs

What is Moonwell?

Moonwell is a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol. Users can supply crypto assets to earn interest or borrow other assets against their collateral, using smart contracts instead of a bank. The sources describe it as an open app built for simple, direct use of these tools.

Which blockchains does Moonwell run on?

The sources name Base, Optimism and Moonbeam. One third-party guide describes Moonwell as built on Ethereum-compatible blockchains, and the Base deployment is the one most often mentioned in public reporting.

What is the WELL token?

WELL is the token associated with the Moonwell project. Public reporting shows it trading on exchanges and describe it as operating on the Moonbeam platform. The sources reviewed do not explain in detail what WELL is used for inside the protocol.

Is the Moonwell card still available?

One third-party write-up reports that the card programme stopped issuing cards in July 2026 and was switched off in September. Anyone holding a card should check the official Moonwell channels for the current position on their card and any balances.

Does Moonwell require KYC?

The sources reviewed do not state whether Moonwell requires identity checks. As a non-custodial lending protocol, access is generally through a self-managed wallet. Check the official app for current requirements.

Is Moonwell safe to use?

Moonwell is a DeFi product, so funds are exposed to smart-contract bugs and market moves. The sources do not list audits or a full incident history, so review those before depositing a large amount.
