Our verdict on Marginfi

6.3/10

Marginfi suits Solana users who want a straightforward place to lend assets for interest or borrow against collateral and who are comfortable with DeFi risk. Its main strength is a simple pooled lending model across several major assets. The main caveat is trust: TVL has fallen well below its 2024 peak, users have raised transparency and communication complaints, and fees and audit details are not clearly published in the sources reviewed. Check live rates, risk settings and audit documentation before depositing anything.

What is Marginfi?

Marginfi is a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol on Solana. Users connect a wallet, deposit supported assets into shared liquidity pools, earn interest, and can borrow against their deposits. Third-party descriptions say it supports a broad set of assets, including SOL, BTC, ETH and stablecoins.

The protocol was once a centerpiece of Solana DeFi. Coverage from October 2025 says its TVL has been in steady decline since a peak of about $880M in April 2024, and a sudden outflow in April 2024 drew attention. A 2026 tutorial and a mid-2026 review still describe it as in use, so it appears to be operating.

The reputation picture is mixed. Community posts raise concerns about how isolated assets were described and about moderation in its Discord. Others complain about the lack of clarity on a token or airdrop after months of point farming. The project's homepage details, fee table and audit information could not be confirmed from the sources reviewed.

How Marginfi works

Marginfi works like a money market. Lenders deposit assets into shared pools and earn interest. Borrowers take assets out of those pools by posting collateral worth more than the loan, which is called overcollateralization.

Interest rates are set by the protocol and respond to how much of each pool is borrowed. If a borrower's collateral falls too far in value relative to the debt, the position can be liquidated to repay lenders. One third-party write-up says Marginfi runs a risk engine alongside overcollateralization to protect the protocol.

An early description presented marginfi as a global margin account that lets traders take on margin across Solana protocols. More recent guides describe it mainly as a lending and borrowing platform with permissionless access.

6 features

Key features

01

Shared lending pools

Users deposit supported assets into shared liquidity pools and earn interest from borrowers.

02

Overcollateralized borrowing

Borrowing is overcollateralized, so loans must be backed by deposits worth more than the amount borrowed.

03

Risk engine

The protocol describes a risk engine that works with overcollateralization to protect solvency.

04

Multi-asset markets

Reports cite SOL, BTC, ETH and various stablecoins among the supported assets.

05

Wallet-based access

Access is described as permissionless. You connect a Solana wallet, with no account signup.

06

Margin account origins

Early materials presented marginfi as a global margin account for trading across Solana protocols.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear lending and borrowing model on Solana, with deposits earning interest from borrowers.
  • Supports a wide range of assets, including SOL, BTC, ETH and stablecoins, according to third-party descriptions.
  • Overcollateralized design with a described risk engine aimed at protecting solvency.
  • Permissionless, wallet-based access with no account signup.
  • Long-standing presence in Solana DeFi, with a profile dating back to 2022.

Watch out for

  • TVL has fallen steadily since a roughly $880M peak in April 2024, and a sharp outflow in April 2024 drew wide attention.
  • Community posts accuse the project of misleading users about how "isolated assets" work and of banning critics from its Discord.
  • Users farming points have complained about the lack of clear communication on a token launch or airdrop.
  • Fees, interest rate models and audit details could not be confirmed from the sources available, so users must check them in the app.
  • Smart-contract, oracle and liquidation risks apply to any on-chain lending, and Solana-only deployment ties it to one ecosystem.

Marginfi fees

Marginfi's fee schedule is not published in the sources reviewed. In lending protocols, the main costs are the interest rate you pay when borrowing and any share of interest the protocol keeps, plus Solana network fees on each transaction.

Users should check live supply and borrow rates, and any origination or liquidation fees, in the app before depositing. Rates move with pool utilization, so a quoted figure today may not hold tomorrow.

Is Marginfi safe?

Marginfi is non-custodial in the usual DeFi sense: you keep control of your wallet but your deposits sit in smart contracts. That exposes lenders to contract bugs, oracle failures and bad debt if liquidations do not work as designed. The sources reviewed do not list audits, so check the project's own documentation for audit reports and bug bounty details.

The April 2024 TVL outflow and later user complaints about transparency are reasons for caution. One community thread says the project misled users about "isolated assets" and banned critics from its Discord. That is a single-source allegation, but it is worth weighing. Only deposit what you can afford to lose, and check the asset-specific risk settings before lending or borrowing.

6 steps

How to get started with Marginfi

  1. 1

Set up a Solana wallet and fund it with a small amount of SOL for network fees.

  2. 2

Open the official Marginfi app, checking the address carefully to avoid look-alike sites.

  3. 3

Connect your wallet and review the supported markets, their rates and any risk notes.

  4. 4

Deposit a small test amount of a supported asset to see how the interface and interest accrual work.

  5. 5

If you borrow, keep your collateral ratio well above the liquidation threshold and monitor it as prices move.

  6. 6

Withdraw or repay when you are finished and confirm the transactions in your wallet.

Who Marginfi is for

Marginfi is for experienced DeFi users on Solana who want to earn interest on deposits or take overcollateralized loans and can monitor their positions. Newcomers and anyone who needs clear published fees or audit records should research further and start with small amounts.

Marginfi FAQs

What is Marginfi?

Marginfi is a decentralized borrow-lend protocol on Solana. You connect a wallet, deposit supported assets into shared liquidity pools to earn interest, and can borrow other assets against your deposits.

Which blockchain does Marginfi use?

Marginfi runs on Solana. Early descriptions also framed it as a margin account for trading across Solana protocols, but current guides describe it mainly as a lending and borrowing market.

Is Marginfi safe?

Third-party write-ups describe the protocol as overcollateralized, meaning you must deposit more value than you borrow. It also uses a risk engine alongside that collateral. Neither measure removes smart-contract, oracle or liquidation risk.

Does Marginfi have a token or airdrop?

The sources reviewed do not name a Marginfi token. Community posts discuss airdrop speculation and complain about the lack of clear communication on a launch. Treat any airdrop as uncertain and do not deposit funds purely on that hope.

What assets can I lend or borrow on Marginfi?

Reports say it supports a range of assets, including SOL, BTC, ETH and several stablecoins. The exact list changes, so check the app for current markets and their risk settings.

Why did Marginfi's TVL drop?

Third-party coverage notes TVL has been declining since a peak of about $880M in April 2024, with a sudden outflow that month. Falling TVL does not by itself show a problem with the contracts, but it means less liquidity and activity than at the peak.
