Fira Review 2026: Fixed-Rate Onchain Lending Explained

Fira is a newer Ethereum lending protocol built around permissionless fixed-rate markets, with about $14M in TVL. Its main appeal is rate certainty, and its main caveat is a short track record.

Our verdict on Fira

6.7/10

Fira suits DeFi users who want predictable borrowing costs or a known yield to maturity, such as people running cash-and-carry trades or planning treasury cashflows. Its main strength is a clear fixed-rate design with fixed and variable vaults on Ethereum. The main caveat is its short track record: it has only been listed since January 2026, auditor details are not named publicly, and fees are not published on the homepage. Start small and read the docs first.

What is Fira?

Fira is a lending and borrowing protocol that specializes in permissionless fixed-rate markets onchain. Its tagline is "Lock rates. Sell yield. Exit anytime." DefiLlama categorizes it under Lending and shows it on Ethereum, with about $14M in TVL.

The protocol was listed on DefiLlama in late January 2026, and TVL rose about 34% over the past week. It has no token according to DefiLlama, and two audits are listed.

The homepage offers two vault types. Fixed Vaults lock a rate until maturity, with terms of 30 to 120 days, and Variable Vaults pay a floating yield with no lockup. Both are shown with a 5.8% average APR.

How Fira works

Most onchain lending pools use floating rates that move with how much of the pool is borrowed. Fira's pitch is that this makes borrowing costs unpredictable and yield a moving target. It builds markets with defined maturities so both sides know the rate in advance.

In a Fixed Vault, a lender locks a rate until maturity, and a borrower pays a cost known at the start. Fira says these markets are powered by coupon tokens, and that liquidity providers can use Flex Mode to support the rate market without taking a maturity lockup. Variable Vaults work like a conventional pool, where supplied assets earn a floating yield with no lockup.

Because the borrowing cost is fixed, users can run strategies such as cash-and-carry, where they borrow at a fixed rate and deploy into a higher-yielding source. The spread is locked at entry, though risks from the yield source and collateral remain.

7 features

Key features

01

Fixed Vaults

Lenders can lock in a guaranteed rate until maturity, with terms shown as 30 to 120 days. Borrowers get costs defined upfront rather than repricing as markets move.

02

Variable Vaults

Supply assets and earn a floating yield that adjusts with market demand. The site states there are no lockups or maturity dates.

03

Flex Mode

Liquidity providers can supply to Fixed Vaults in Flex Mode and earn from rate market activity without a maturity lockup.

04

Coupon tokens

The site says fixed-rate markets across assets and maturities are powered by coupon tokens, which separate yield from principal.

05

Strategy use cases

The homepage markets cash-and-carry, delta-neutral yield and treasury planning, where a fixed borrowing cost locks in the spread at entry.

06

Permissionless markets

Markets are described as permissionless, so fixed-rate markets can be created across assets and maturities rather than by a central listing process.

07

Documentation and transparency

The site links to documentation, a whitepaper, a transparency page and a help center for users who want to check the mechanics.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Fixed-rate borrowing gives predictable costs, which suits treasuries and strategies that need a known spread.
  • Offers both fixed and variable vaults, so users can choose between certainty and flexibility.
  • Flex Mode lets liquidity providers support the rate market without a maturity lockup.
  • Two audits are listed on DefiLlama and the site links to documentation, a whitepaper and a transparency page.
  • TVL of about $14M and a 34% weekly increase suggest growing interest early in its life.
  • No governance token, so there is no token-price exposure in using the protocol.

Watch out for

  • Very new: DefiLlama lists it only since late January 2026, so it has little track record through market stress.
  • The two audits are listed but the auditors, scope and findings are not named publicly.
  • Fee schedule is not published on the homepage, so the real cost of borrowing or lending is hard to judge up front.
  • The 5.8% average APR is a homepage figure with no stated time frame, and actual rates depend on each market.
  • Runs on Ethereum only, so mainnet gas costs apply and there is no multi-chain option.
  • Fixed-rate markets with coupon tokens are more complex than a simple variable-rate lending pool, which raises the learning curve.

Fira fees

Fira's homepage does not publish a fee schedule available. It shows an average APR of 5.8% on both vault types, but that is a rate, not a fee.

Users should check the app and the documentation for protocol fees, any early-exit costs and borrow rates before committing funds. Ethereum gas costs apply to every transaction on top of any protocol charges.

Is Fira safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits for Fira, but the project does not name the auditors or summarize their findings. Readers should find the reports through the official documentation and check the scope. No incidents or exploits appear.

Like any DeFi lending protocol, Fira carries smart-contract risk, oracle and collateral risk for borrowers, and the risk that a yield source used in a strategy loses value. Funds sit in smart contracts rather than with a custodian, so users keep control of their wallets but also bear the risk of mistakes. The project does not state any regulatory status.

The protocol has only been tracked since January 2026, so it has little history through volatile markets. A small initial position is a sensible way to learn the mechanics.

6 steps

How to get started with Fira

  1. 1

Read the documentation and whitepaper on the official site to understand fixed rates, coupon tokens and Flex Mode.

  2. 2

Check the transparency page and the audit details before depositing funds.

  3. 3

Connect an Ethereum wallet to the app and confirm you are on the official site.

  4. 4

Choose a side: lend into a Fixed or Variable Vault, or borrow against collateral.

  5. 5

For fixed positions, compare the term (30 to 120 days) and the quoted rate, then start with a small amount.

  6. 6

Keep some ETH for gas and monitor collateral health if you borrow.

Who Fira is for

Fira is for experienced DeFi users, treasuries and strategy builders who care about rate certainty and understand collateral and smart-contract risk. Casual users who just want a simple variable-rate deposit may find the fixed-rate and coupon-token model more complex than they need.

Fira FAQs

What is Fira?

Fira is a lending and borrowing protocol that focuses on permissionless fixed-rate markets onchain. Users can lock in a rate until maturity or use variable-rate vaults that adjust with market demand.

What rates and terms does Fira offer?

The homepage describes Fixed Vaults with terms of 30 to 120 days and Variable Vaults with no lockup or maturity. Both are shown with an average APR of 5.8%, but that is a headline figure and real rates will vary by market and over time.

Does Fira have a token?

Fira has no token according to DefiLlama. Fixed-rate positions are described as being powered by coupon tokens, which are part of the lending mechanism rather than a governance or reward token.

Which blockchain does Fira run on?

DefiLlama lists Fira on Ethereum only. The project does not mention other networks.

Is Fira safe?

DefiLlama shows two audits listed, but the project does not say who performed them or what they covered. Any DeFi protocol carries smart-contract risk, and a project listed only since January 2026 has had limited time in production.

Can I withdraw from Fira before maturity?

The site says exit is instant for both vault types, and that fixed rates do not mean being stuck, since you can adjust or exit before maturity. The details, including any price impact on early exit, are in the documentation, which the project does not reproduce.
