Our verdict on Ethos Reserve

5.5/10

Ethos Reserve suits experienced DeFi users who want to borrow against BTC, ETH or OP without paying interest and who understand CDP liquidation mechanics. Its main strength is the 0% interest model, supported by yield from delta-neutral vaults. The main caveat is size and transparency: TVL is only about $231,000, vault strategy risk is added on top of normal smart-contract risk, and borrowing fees and peg details were not available publicly reviewed.

What is Ethos Reserve?

Ethos Reserve is a decentralized borrowing protocol on Optimism. Users deposit Bitcoin, Ethereum or Optimism collateral and borrow the Ethos Reserve Note (ERN) at 0% interest.

The protocol also puts part of the deposited assets into private vaults that generate delta-neutral yield. That yield funds what the project calls a self-sustaining flywheel, in place of interest paid by borrowers. DefiLlama has tracked it since May 2023 and lists the OATH token and two audits.

It is small. Total value locked is about $231,000, down 0.7% over seven days. The homepage could not be fetched for this review, so details like fees and the current state of the app are unverified.

How Ethos Reserve works

Ethos Reserve is a collateralized debt position (CDP) system. You deposit Bitcoin, Ethereum or Optimism collateral and borrow Ethos Reserve Note (ERN) against it. You must keep the value of your collateral above a required level, or the position can be liquidated.

Unlike many lenders, the protocol says it charges 0% interest on these loans. To fund itself, it sends a portion of deposited assets to private vaults that run a delta-neutral strategy, which aims to earn yield while limiting exposure to price moves. That yield is meant to keep the protocol self-sustaining.

The project does not detail the liquidation mechanism, the ERN peg mechanism or how vault yield is shared. Newcomers should read the documentation for these before borrowing.

6 features

Key features

01

0% interest loans

Borrowers mint ERN against collateral and the protocol states that the loans carry 0% interest.

02

Multi-asset collateral

Users can deposit Bitcoin, Ethereum or Optimism assets as collateral for borrowing.

03

ERN borrowing token

Loans are paid out in the Ethos Reserve Note (ERN), the protocol's own borrowing token.

04

Delta-neutral vaults

Part of the deposited assets goes into private vaults that run a delta-neutral strategy to earn yield.

05

Yield flywheel design

Vault yield is meant to support the protocol itself, since borrowers pay no interest.

06

Optimism deployment

The protocol runs on Optimism, an Ethereum layer-2 network, which usually means lower transaction costs than Ethereum mainnet.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Loans carry 0% interest, which makes borrowing costs predictable.
  • Accepts Bitcoin, Ethereum and Optimism collateral rather than a single asset.
  • Runs on Optimism, which usually means lower gas costs than Ethereum mainnet.
  • DefiLlama lists two audits.
  • Has been tracked since May 2023, so it has some history.

Watch out for

  • Total value locked is only about $231,000, which is small for a lending protocol and suggests limited depth and usage.
  • The delta-neutral vault strategy adds strategy and counterparty risk on top of ordinary smart-contract risk.
  • Only Optimism is listed, so the protocol is exposed to that single chain.
  • The homepage could not be fetched, so documentation, fee schedules and current status could not be checked.
  • Borrowing fees, redemption rules and liquidation terms are not, so the true cost of a loan is unclear.

Ethos Reserve fees

Borrowers are not charged interest, according to the protocol's description. That is the only cost fact available. Any one-time borrowing fee, redemption fee or liquidation penalty is not stated publicly we reviewed.

Users would normally see these figures in the protocol's app and documentation before opening a loan. You will also pay Optimism network gas fees for each transaction.

Is Ethos Reserve safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits for Ethos Reserve, but the auditors, dates and findings are not public we reviewed. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it. As with any CDP, users face smart-contract risk, collateral price risk and liquidation risk if their collateral ratio falls too low.

The private vaults that run a delta-neutral strategy add risk beyond a plain lending protocol. That includes strategy failures, counterparty exposure and potential losses that could affect protocol health. The project does not describe the vault design or any past incidents. With TVL near $231,000, the protocol has a limited track record at scale. This review is research-based and not investment advice.

6 steps

How to get started with Ethos Reserve

  1. 1

Read the protocol's documentation to confirm the current collateral types, ratios, fees and liquidation rules.

  2. 2

Set up an Optimism-compatible wallet and fund it with a supported collateral asset plus a little ETH for gas.

  3. 3

Check the audit information and confirm you are on the official site before connecting your wallet.

  4. 4

Open a position by depositing collateral, and borrow a conservative amount of ERN to keep a wide safety buffer.

  5. 5

Monitor your collateral ratio, because price drops can trigger liquidation.

  6. 6

Repay the ERN and withdraw collateral when you want to close the position.

Who Ethos Reserve is for

Ethos Reserve is for DeFi users comfortable with CDPs, collateral ratios and liquidation risk, who want an interest-free way to borrow against Bitcoin, Ethereum or Optimism assets on Optimism. It is not suited to beginners or to anyone who cannot monitor a position.

Ethos Reserve FAQs

What is Ethos Reserve?

Ethos Reserve is a decentralized borrowing protocol on Optimism. Users lock Bitcoin, Ethereum or Optimism collateral and take out loans in the Ethos Reserve Note (ERN) at 0% interest.

Does Ethos Reserve really charge 0% interest?

The protocol describes its loans as 0% interest. Other costs, such as one-time borrowing fees or redemption mechanics, are not public we reviewed, so check the protocol's documentation.

What collateral can I use?

The protocol lists Bitcoin, Ethereum and Optimism as collateral. The exact tokens, such as wrapped versions, and the collateral ratios are not specified publicly we have.

Where does the yield come from?

A portion of deposited assets goes into private vaults that run a delta-neutral strategy to generate yield. That yield funds what the project calls a self-sustaining flywheel for the protocol.

What is the OATH token?

DefiLlama lists OATH as the protocol's token. Its exact role, such as governance or incentives, is not described publicly we reviewed.

Is Ethos Reserve safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits, but the auditors and findings are not public. Any CDP carries smart-contract, liquidation and collateral-price risk, and the vault strategy adds more. Only use funds you can afford to lose.
