Bao Finance Review 2026: ETH-Backed Derivatives and Borrowing

Bao Finance is an Ethereum-based DeFi protocol for minting pegged or leveraged tokens and borrowing against ETH and ETH-backed collateral. It is best suited to experienced DeFi users, and the main caveat is that its audit and decentralisation claims are not yet independently verified.

By the DappsAtlas editorial team · Updated

Our verdict on Bao Masterchef V1

4.2/10

Bao Finance suits DeFi users who already hold ETH or ETH-linked tokens and want to borrow against them or mint pegged tokens, and who are comfortable reading contract risk for themselves. Its main strength is a narrow collateral policy limited to ETH and ETH-backed assets, plus a public bug bounty and claims of continuous monitoring. The main caveat is that public sources show no audit listing on DefiLlama, several products are still marked coming soon, and the fee schedule is not published. Treat the scores as a research view, not a safety guarantee.

What is Bao Masterchef V1?

Bao Finance is a DeFi protocol that describes itself as offering tokenized derivatives. Its homepage presents two core products: pegged tokens baoUSD and baoETH, which are minted or borrowed against ETH and ETH-backed collateral, and a lending market where users supply collateral and borrow those tokens. DefiLlama classifies it as a farm and lists Ethereum and Gnosis as its chains, with the BAO token as its governance token.

The project's stated vision goes beyond these products. The homepage describes plans to tokenize weather risk, sports statistics, AI model performance and economic indicators, and most of these are presented as future ideas rather than live markets. The project does not show any of those derivatives in operation, so they should be treated as roadmap claims.

The protocol has a visible community side. The homepage says it raised funds from over 200 DeFi communities during its distribution phase, and it links to Discord, Snapshot, X and DeBank. Some products, including baoBTC and stability pools, are marked coming soon. The project does not include a live total value locked figure from DefiLlama, so the size of the protocol is not established.

How Bao Masterchef V1 works

Bao Finance is built around tokenized derivatives, meaning tokens whose value tracks something else, such as the price of ETH or a basket of assets. The homepage describes baoUSD and baoETH as pegged tokens backed by ETH and ETH-linked assets, and it says the protocol aims to keep those pegs through variable borrow rates and liquidity balancers.

In practice, a user deposits collateral into the protocol and either mints a token against it or borrows an existing token. A borrower pays interest at a variable rate. If the collateral falls too far in value, the position can be liquidated, which is the usual risk in this kind of lending.

The project also runs liquidity pools where users earn trading and reward tokens, and it plans stability pools and staked derivatives that are not yet live. The BAO token gives holders veBAO governance rights, and the homepage says Bao fees flow into an insurance fund backing the token.

5 features

Key features

01

Minting pegged and leveraged tokens

Users can mint baoUSD and baoETH from deposited ETH, choosing between pegged and leveraged tokens depending on strategy.

02

Borrowing against collateral

The protocol lets users borrow baoUSD or baoETH against supported collateral, with variable borrow rates set by the market.

03

Preset borrow strategies

The homepage lists borrow strategies such as leverage long, leverage short, leverage yield and spend and earn, each built from supplying, borrowing and reinvesting steps.

04

Liquidity pool rewards

Users can deposit into ETH or USD pegged pools and earn AURA and BAL rewards, with the homepage quoting up to 50 percent APR.

05

veBAO governance

Locking BAO gives veBAO, which carries voting rights over governance proposals.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • The collateral policy is narrow by design, with the homepage limiting backing to ETH and ETH-backed tokens.
  • The protocol has a clear mechanism for pegged and leveraged tokens that a newcomer can follow from the homepage description.
  • A public bug bounty and a stated policy of continuous contract monitoring are published.
  • The BAO token has a stated link to fee flows through an insurance fund.
  • The project publicly describes its remaining centralised controls and its goal of removing them.

Watch out for

  • Audit coverage is not established: DefiLlama lists zero audits, and the project's claim of continuous monitoring by white hat hackers is not backed by linked audit reports.
  • The homepage says multi-sig wallets control various parameters during an initial period, so the protocol is not yet fully trustless by its own description.
  • The approved collateral list (ETH, wstETH, rETH, LUSD) does not match the supply list, which also shows weETH and sUSDe, so readers need to check which assets are currently accepted.
  • Several products, including baoBTC, stability pools and staked derivatives, are marked coming soon, so parts of the stated model are not yet live.
  • Borrow rates are variable, and the peg of baoUSD and baoETH depends on rate changes, balancers and a redemption feature that is also marked coming soon.
  • Minting and borrowing against tokens carries liquidation and smart-contract risk, and the project does not show any loss history or insurance payout details.

Bao Masterchef V1 fees

The project does not publish a fee schedule for minting, borrowing or swapping. DefiLlama says Bao fees go into an insurance fund that backs the BAO token, so fees are part of the design, but the amounts are not stated.

Borrow rates are described on the homepage as variable and market-driven. Readers should look up the current rate on the app before borrowing, since public sources give no fixed figures.

Is Bao Masterchef V1 safe?

The project does not establish a full audit record. DefiLlama lists zero audits, and the homepage claims that all contracts are continuously monitored by white hat hackers since 2021, with a bug bounty in the navigation. Readers should look for named audit reports and check whether they cover the current contract versions.

The homepage says that some centralised aspects remain, with multi-sig wallets controlling various parameters. This means that a small group of keyholders can change some settings, which is a counterparty and governance risk until those controls are removed. The project says it is working toward full trustlessness, but public sources give no timeline.

Collateral and liquidation risk are the main user-level risks. Borrowers can lose collateral if prices move against them, and the project does not describe the liquidation process in detail. Public sources also do not state any regulatory status or licence for the protocol, and the project does not publish one in the material reviewed. Use DeFi products only with funds you can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with Bao Masterchef V1

  1. 1

Read the homepage and documentation to confirm which collateral is currently accepted.

  2. 2

Check the audit status and the bug bounty terms before connecting a wallet.

  3. 3

Connect a supported Ethereum or Gnosis wallet to the official app.

  4. 4

Deposit ETH or a supported collateral asset to mint a token or open a borrow position.

  5. 5

Review the borrow rate and your liquidation threshold before confirming any transaction.

  6. 6

Monitor your position and the peg of any token you hold, since the protocol relies on rate changes to keep pegs stable.

Who Bao Masterchef V1 is for

Bao Finance is aimed at experienced DeFi users who already hold ETH or ETH-linked tokens and want to borrow against them or mint pegged tokens. It is less suited to people new to lending protocols, since liquidation rules, variable rates and governance controls all need to be understood before use. Check that DeFi lending is legal where you live.

Bao Masterchef V1 FAQs

Is Bao Finance safe to use?

The project does not establish that Bao Finance is safe. The project says its contracts are continuously monitored by white hat hackers and runs a bug bounty, but DefiLlama lists zero audits and the project does not include audit reports. Treat any DeFi protocol as high risk and check the audit documents yourself before depositing funds.

What is baoUSD and how does it work?

According to the homepage, baoUSD is a token backed by ETH and other ETH-backed tokens, and baoETH is a token backed by ETH. You can get these tokens by minting them from deposited collateral or by borrowing them against supported collateral. The project says both are meant to hold a peg through variable borrow rates and liquidity balancers.

What is veBAO?

veBAO is what you receive when you lock BAO tokens, according to the homepage. The project says veBAO holders get voting rights and can propose and vote on governance decisions. The project does not state the lock length or the voting thresholds.

What fees does Bao Finance charge?

The project does not publish the exact fee schedule. DefiLlama describes Bao fees as flowing into an insurance fund that backs the BAO token, but no percentages or fee tables appear in the material reviewed. Check the protocol's own documentation before using it.

Why do public reporting shows two Bao Finance tokens?

Public reporting includes price pages for both Bao Finance (old) and Bao Finance (New), and the prices differ. Confirm the contract address from the official site before buying or swapping BAO, because public reporting do not establish which listing is the current token.
