Alchemix V2 Review 2026: Superseded by V3 Self-Repaying Loans

Alchemix V2 was the version of the self-repaying loan protocol that ran on Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum and Fantom. Its governance and bridge pages now say the migration to V3 is complete, so new users should look at the current Alchemix app instead.

Our verdict on Alchemix V2

6.5/10

Alchemix V2 is the earlier version of a self-repaying loan protocol, now superseded by V3 according to its own pages. Its main strength is the idea of borrowing against a deposit while the deposit's yield repays the debt. The main caveat is that V2 is no longer the live product and only a small amount of value remains in it. Anyone interested should use the current Alchemix app, read the docs on earmarking and the peg, and size loans conservatively.

What is Alchemix V2?

Alchemix V2 is a version of the Alchemix protocol, which issues synthetic tokens that represent the future yield of a deposit. Users could take loans against ETH or stablecoin deposits, and the yield generated would pay the debt down over time. DeFiLlama tracks it under Synthetics across Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum and Fantom.

The V2 bridge and governance pages now say the migration to V3 is complete and direct users to the main Alchemix site for the new vaults. Tracked TVL for V2 is only about $82,725. For that reason this page treats V2 as superseded, and the live product is the current Alchemix app.

The protocol is one of the older names in DeFi and has its own token, ALCX, and a DAO. Its homepage lists two audits, open-source code and a footer warning that DeFi tools are not toys.

How Alchemix V2 works

Alchemix lets users borrow against a deposit without selling it. A user deposits collateral, which the protocol places into yield-generating strategies. The user can then mint a synthetic token, an alAsset, up to a set share of the deposit's value.

As the collateral earns yield, that yield is applied to the outstanding debt. In the best case the loan shrinks without the borrower making payments. The pace depends on the yield earned, so it is not fixed, and the borrower can also repay manually.

The Transmuter helps keep alAssets close to their peg. Holders can redeem alAssets for the underlying asset 1:1 over a period. The homepage describes a newer mechanism in which redemptions are earmarked and settle after a fixed time, shrinking alAsset supply and pushing the price toward 1.00. Those details describe the current Alchemix system, not necessarily V2 as it originally ran.

7 features

Key features

01

Self-repaying loans

Collateral is deposited into yield strategies, and the yield is used to pay down a loan taken in synthetic alAssets.

02

Synthetic alAssets

alAssets are synthetic tokens meant to track the value of the underlying asset, such as ETH or USD stablecoins, and they represent the borrowed amount.

03

Transmuter redemptions

The Transmuter lets users redeem alAssets for the underlying asset 1:1 over time, which helps pull the peg toward 1.00.

04

Earmarking mechanism

The current homepage describes a redemption engine that earmarks debt and settles it after a fixed period. This is meant to support higher loan-to-value ratios.

05

Multi-strategy vault (MYT)

The current app lets users deposit once into a portfolio of DAO-curated yield strategies with no lock-ups.

06

DAO governance

Alchemix runs a DAO that funds projects building on its synthetic tokens, with a forum and a governance page.

07

Large-depositor onboarding

Depositors of $100,000 or more can request a personalised session with a team member.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Pioneered the self-repaying loan model, where deposit yield pays down debt.
  • Borrowers keep their collateral exposure instead of selling it.
  • Two audits are listed and the code is open source.
  • Has a DAO, a governance forum and public documentation.
  • The current app advertises 0% interest and no market liquidation risk, per the homepage.

Watch out for

  • The V2 pages now direct users to the V3 vaults, so V2 is no longer the product to use.
  • Tracked V2 TVL is only about $82,725, so little capital remains in the old contracts.
  • Smart-contract risk applies, since the protocol depends on yield sources and integrations built on other protocols.
  • Loans can only be repaid by yield or manually, and yield is variable, so repayment speed is not guaranteed.
  • Alchemix publishes no team names, licence or regulatory status in the material reviewed, and its terms say use is at your own risk.
  • The synthetic alAssets can trade below their $1 peg, which is a risk for anyone holding them.

Alchemix V2 fees

Alchemix advertises 0% interest on its loans for the current app. The material reviewed does not publish a full fee schedule for V2, including any protocol fees on yield or redemptions.

Users also pay network gas on whichever chain they use, and fees can change with the vault and strategy. The current app and the protocol docs are where up-to-date figures would be shown.

Is Alchemix V2 safe?

Alchemix lists two audits, publishes open-source code and documentation, and says it prioritises capital preservation with defined risk controls. The homepage also states that no guarantees are given and that users act at their own risk. Audits lower risk but cannot rule out bugs or failures in the integrated yield protocols.

Custody is non-custodial, since users connect their own wallet. The main risks are smart-contract risk, dependence on external yield sources, and alAsset peg risk. The material reviewed names no licence or regulatory status for the project, and it does not describe any specific past exploit.

Because V2 has been superseded, users with old positions should follow the official migration guidance and avoid unofficial links.

6 steps

How to get started with Alchemix V2

  1. 1

Open the official Alchemix site and read the notice on V2 and the migration to V3.

  2. 2

Check the docs and FAQ for how borrowing limits, earmarked debt and redemptions work.

  3. 3

If you still hold a V2 position, follow the official migration instructions to move it to V3.

  4. 4

Connect a compatible wallet only on the official domain, and verify the address bar.

  5. 5

Start with a small deposit and a low loan-to-value ratio, so your debt is repaid with a margin of safety.

  6. 6

Monitor your position and the alAsset peg regularly, and revisit the docs when anything changes.

Who Alchemix V2 is for

This page suits readers who hold or held a V2 position, or who are researching the history of self-repaying loans. New borrowers interested in the concept should look at the current Alchemix app and its documentation instead of V2.

Alchemix V2 FAQs

Is Alchemix V2 still active?

The V2 pages state that the migration to V3 is complete and point users to the main Alchemix site for the new vaults. Tracked V2 TVL is small, about $82,725. Treat V2 as superseded rather than as the live product.

What is a self-repaying loan on Alchemix?

A user deposits collateral, which is put to work in a yield strategy, and borrows synthetic alAssets against it. The yield generated is used to pay down the debt over time. The protocol describes this as a self-repaying loan.

What loan-to-value does Alchemix offer?

The current Alchemix homepage advertises borrowing up to 90% LTV at 0% interest against ETH or USDC. That is the V3-era offering. The V2 limits are not given in the material reviewed, so check the docs for historical terms.

Which chains did Alchemix V2 run on?

V2 is listed on Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum and Fantom. Fantom support is a legacy detail, and the current app may use different networks, so check the official site for what is live.

What is the ALCX token?

ALCX is the protocol's own token and is tied to its DAO governance. The Alchemix DAO describes funding projects that build on Alchemix or use its synthetic tokens.

Is Alchemix safe?

The homepage says Alchemix prioritises capital preservation through open-source code, independent audits and defined risk controls, and two audits are listed. It also says DeFi tools are not toys and should be used at your own risk. Audits reduce but do not remove smart-contract risk.
