What Quantum Resistant Ledger is

Quantum Resistant Ledger, usually shortened to QRL, is a standalone blockchain built around one idea: digital signatures that should hold up against future quantum computers. Most major networks, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, rely on elliptic-curve signatures. Researchers widely expect these could be broken by a sufficiently powerful quantum machine, though no such machine exists today. QRL's founder, Peter Waterland, started the project after reaching that concern.

Instead of elliptic curves, QRL uses a hash-based signature scheme called XMSS. Its security rests on hash functions, which are believed to be much harder for quantum computers to attack. The project describes itself as future-proof, but that is a claim about design intent, not a proven outcome.

The team is described as globally distributed, with developers, analysts, advisors and designers. The project's own materials say the chain supports transactions and decentralized messaging. QRL is separate from Ethereum, so it is not an ERC-20 token. It is the coin of its own network, and the market data lists it in categories such as Smart Contract Platform, Proof of Work and Quantum-Resistant.

What the QRL token is used for

QRL is the native coin of its network. Public documentation describes the unit as the quantum (plural quanta), and it is used to pay transaction fees and to reward the miners who secure the chain. Holding it also lets you send and receive value on the network, much as with other first-generation coins.

Beyond payments, the project has talked about decentralized communication and, with its next-generation platform, smart contracts. The next generation is codenamed Zond. According to the project's anniversary post from June 2024, Zond is meant to add compatibility with web3 tooling and a proof-of-stake design with Ethereum-style features. I have not seen evidence that this is fully live, so check the project's current announcements before assuming it is.

One honest limit: Public information shows little about everyday applications on QRL, and no major dApps are listed for it. Its practical appeal today is mainly the security argument. A community discussion in public reporting shows even holders asking why they would choose QRL over other stores of value, which reflects how much of the case rests on a quantum threat that has not yet materialized.

Supply and tokenomics

As of 2026-11-05, the data shows about 78.4 million QRL in circulation, with the same figure listed as total supply. The listed maximum supply is 105 million. Because circulating and total supply match in the data, the fully diluted value equals the market cap, at about $86.6 million. That gap between current supply and the 105 million cap suggests further issuance is possible, but public sources do not describe the emission schedule, so check the project's documentation for it.

At the time of writing, the price was about $1.10, putting QRL around rank 296 by market cap. The record high was about $3.87 on 2018-01-08, shortly before the mainnet launch. The record low was about $0.041 on 2023-12-01. Over the previous seven days the price had fallen roughly 9%, and over the past year roughly 19%.

Trading volume was very small: about $50,209 over 24 hours. That is thin relative to the market cap, which means large orders can move the price and exiting a position may be harder than the headline valuation suggests. These figures change constantly and are shown only as a snapshot, not a view on where the price is heading.

Chains, holding and trading

QRL runs on its own layer-1 chain, so it is not issued on other blockchains, and it is not the native token of any other network. The data lists RandomX as the hashing algorithm, a CPU-friendly proof-of-work design. Some descriptions of the project still mention proof of stake, which fits the planned Zond upgrade more than the chain described in the market data.

To hold QRL you need a wallet that supports the QRL network. The project's documentation explains that, as with other coins, a wallet manages public and private keys that map to an address. Because QRL uses XMSS signatures, wallets must track signing state carefully, since each one-time key is meant to be used only once.

For trading, QRL has historically been available on a limited set of centralized exchanges, and the very low daily volume suggests liquidity is shallow. Check which venues list it, what pairs they offer, and what the withdrawal rules are. Make sure any deposit address is for the genuine QRL network, as lookalike tokens on other chains can share the name.

History and notable events

QRL's mainnet launched on 2018-06-26, after a development period tied to concerns about quantum threats to existing cryptocurrencies. Project materials from 2018 described it as the first cryptocurrency to design explicitly around quantum computing risk, a claim tied to that date and not something to treat as still true today. Other projects and upgrade proposals have since discussed post-quantum approaches.

The price peaked in January 2018 at about $3.87, around the time of the broader crypto boom, and later fell to a low near $0.041 in December 2023. Since then it has recovered to roughly the current level, though still well under the earlier peak.

In June 2024 the project marked six years of operation and pointed to its next generation, Zond, which is intended to bring web3 compatibility and a proof-of-stake model. Beyond these milestones, public sources do not include details on audits, governance changes, major partnerships or incidents, so none are described here. For a current timeline, read the project's official announcements and technical documentation.

Risks to understand

The biggest question is demand. QRL's pitch depends on quantum computers eventually threatening existing signatures. If that threat arrives later than expected, or if larger networks adopt their own post-quantum upgrades, QRL's niche could shrink. If it arrives sooner, QRL still has to prove its design and ecosystem are adequate.

Liquidity is another concern. With roughly $50 thousand in daily volume against an $86.6 million market cap as of 2026-11-05, prices can be volatile and selling can be difficult. The coin is also well below its 2018 high.

Technical and execution risks matter too. XMSS signatures are stateful, so wallet mistakes such as reusing a one-time key or restoring from an outdated backup can cause problems. The planned Zond upgrade also introduces migration and software risk, and public sources do not confirm its current status. Finally, the project's descriptions mix proof-of-work and proof-of-stake language, so verify details against current documentation.

How to store QRL safely

Treat QRL like any self-custodied coin: whoever controls the private key or recovery phrase controls the funds. Use the wallet tools described in the project's own documentation, and download software only from sources you have verified. Fake wallets and phishing pages are common across crypto.

Write your recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium, and keep more than one copy in separate secure places. Never type it into a website, share it in chat, or store it in a cloud note. Anyone who asks for it, including someone posing as support, is likely a scammer.

Because QRL's XMSS signatures are stateful, read the wallet documentation on how keys and signing state are tracked. Avoid running the same wallet in several places at once, and be careful when restoring from a backup so you do not reuse an old one-time key. Send a small test transaction first when moving funds, and confirm the address is for the real QRL network. If you keep coins on an exchange, remember you rely on that platform's security, and thin trading can make withdrawals or sales slower than expected.

By the numbers

Quantum Resistant Ledger in numbers

Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) is ranked #297 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $84.0M and a price of $1.07 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($84.0M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 11.2% over 7 days, up 21.4% over 30 days, down 21.2% over the past year. It trades about 72% below its all-time high of $3.87, set on Jan 8, 2018.

About 78.39M QRL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 105M (75% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $32.4K, or 0.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
