## What is Bitcoin Gold?

Bitcoin Gold (BTG) is a cryptocurrency created as a fork of Bitcoin. Its founders argued that Bitcoin mining had become concentrated among operators with specialized hardware, and set out to make mining more accessible to people using graphics cards. BTG has its own blockchain, derived from Bitcoin’s, and is not simply a token running on Ethereum or another smart-contract network. The project’s original aim was to spread mining across more participants, rather than rely on a small number of large mining operations. That describes the design goal, not a guarantee about how mining is distributed today. BTG is the coin associated with the Bitcoin Gold network; public sources do not identify other networks where it is issued.

## How the network and mining work

Bitcoin Gold uses proof of work and the Equihash-BTG hashing algorithm. The algorithm was chosen to make the network incompatible with the ASIC hardware commonly used to mine Bitcoin and to support mining with GPUs. This design is intended to lower the hardware barrier for individual miners, but it does not guarantee that mining is profitable or equally accessible in practice. Mining returns depend on factors such as electricity costs, hardware, network conditions and BTG’s market value. Bitcoin Gold also describes replay protection as a safeguard against certain transactions being unintentionally repeated across forked chains. Such protections reduce specific risks but do not remove the need to check wallet and transaction details carefully.

## What is BTG used for?

BTG can be transferred between compatible wallets and may be used where a service or merchant accepts it. It can also be held or traded, but those activities depend on available wallet, exchange and payment support. the public information available here do not establish a broad set of smart-contract applications or other specific services built around BTG, so it is best understood primarily as the coin of a proof-of-work network. Check that a platform supports Bitcoin Gold specifically before depositing or withdrawing: a similarly named asset or an address for another network may not work. Availability and transaction support can vary by provider and location.

## Supply and market context

Bitcoin Gold has a stated maximum supply of 21 million BTG. As of 2026-07-27, about 17.5 million BTG were reported as circulating, with the same amount listed as total supply. These figures can change as coins are mined or supply data is updated. At that date, BTG’s market capitalization was about $4.1 million and its price was about $0.23; market values move constantly and are not a forecast. The project’s fork was also designed to distribute coins to Bitcoin holders at the time, rather than begin with a new genesis block. Historical distribution does not guarantee that an individual can still claim coins, and old claim instructions may be unsafe.

## Risks and storing BTG

BTG carries crypto-specific risks, including price volatility, limited service support, mining concentration, software defects and possible loss of access. A proof-of-work design and replay protection do not guarantee that a blockchain or wallet is secure. Before sending funds, confirm that the wallet supports Bitcoin Gold’s own network and check the address and withdrawal network; a transfer to an incompatible network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Keep recovery phrases offline and private, and never share them with someone offering to help claim or upgrade coins. Consider a small test transfer before moving a larger amount. If using a custodian, check its BTG deposit and withdrawal status and understand that the custodian controls the keys.

BTG FAQs

What is Bitcoin Gold (BTG)?

Bitcoin Gold is a cryptocurrency forked from Bitcoin with its own blockchain. BTG is the coin used on that network.

How is Bitcoin Gold mined?

Bitcoin Gold uses proof of work with the Equihash-BTG algorithm. Its design aims to support mining with GPUs rather than Bitcoin-style ASIC hardware.

What is BTG used for?

BTG is used to transfer value on the Bitcoin Gold network and may be held or traded where supported. Check that a wallet or service supports BTG on its own network before sending it.

What is the maximum supply of BTG?

Bitcoin Gold’s stated maximum supply is 21 million BTG. About 17.5 million were reported as circulating as of 2026-07-27; supply figures can change.

How do I store Bitcoin Gold safely?

Use a wallet that explicitly supports Bitcoin Gold and keep its recovery phrase private and offline. Verify the network and recipient address before sending, and consider testing with a small amount first.

What is the market cap of Bitcoin Gold?

As of Jul 27, 2026, Bitcoin Gold had a market cap of about $4.09M, ranking #1,816 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of BTG?

Bitcoin Gold's all-time high is $456.25, reached on Dec 19, 2017. Its all-time low is $0.1224 (Mar 24, 2025). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of BTG?

As of Jul 27, 2026, about 17.51M BTG were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.
