Rocket Pool Review 2026: Decentralised ETH Liquid Staking

Rocket Pool is a decentralised Ethereum liquid staking protocol where users stake ETH for rETH and node operators run validators with a lower ETH deposit than solo staking. It is a large, established protocol, though it carries smart-contract and validator risks.

Excellent

Our verdict on Rocket Pool

8.0/10

Rocket Pool suits ETH holders who want liquid staking through a decentralised protocol, and technically capable users who want to run a validator with a 16 ETH deposit instead of 32. Its main strengths are its scale, long track record since 2021 and independent node operator model. The main caveats are smart-contract risk, validator penalties, rETH price variance and the fact that fees are not published publicly reviewed. Check current terms on the official site first.

What is Rocket Pool?

Rocket Pool is a decentralised Ethereum staking protocol with two products: liquid staking, where users deposit ETH and receive rETH, and node staking, where operators run validators. DeFiLlama categorises it as Liquid Staking and has listed it since November 2021.

Its main distinction, per DeFiLlama, is a lower node barrier. Operators deposit 16 ETH per validator rather than 32 ETH, with the other half coming from ETH that stakers deposited in return for rETH.

DeFiLlama shows about 1.18 billion USD in total value locked on Ethereum, up around 3 percent over seven days, and lists two audits. The protocol token is RPL.

How Rocket Pool works

Rocket Pool pools ETH from stakers to fund Ethereum validators. Stakers deposit ETH and receive rETH, a liquid token representing their share of the pool, so they do not need 32 ETH or any technical setup.

Node operators run the validators. According to the DeFiLlama description, a node operator deposits 16 ETH per validator, and the staking pool supplies the other 16 ETH. Together this creates a new Ethereum validator.

Because rETH is a token, it can be held, traded or used in other DeFi applications while the underlying ETH remains staked. The protocol is decentralised in that validators are run by independent node operators rather than a single company.

6 features

Key features

01

Liquid staking with rETH

Users deposit ETH into the staking pool and receive rETH, a token that represents their staked position without running a validator.

02

Reduced node deposit

Node operators deposit 16 ETH per validator instead of the 32 ETH required for solo staking, with the pool supplying the other 16 ETH.

03

Decentralised protocol design

The homepage describes Rocket Pool as a decentralised staking protocol with both liquid and node staking products.

04

Audited contracts

DeFiLlama lists two audits for the protocol and describes it as having audited smart contracts and minimised penalty risk.

05

RPL token

Rocket Pool has its own token, RPL, listed on DeFiLlama and tied to the protocol's node operator model.

06

Large Ethereum TVL

DeFiLlama has tracked the protocol since November 2021 and shows roughly 1.18 billion USD in TVL on Ethereum.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Lets users stake ETH without running a validator or holding 32 ETH.
  • Node operators need only 16 ETH per validator under the described model.
  • Decentralised design with independent node operators rather than a single operator.
  • Roughly 1.18 billion USD TVL on Ethereum and listed since 2021 indicates sustained use.
  • Two audits are listed on DeFiLlama.

Watch out for

  • Smart-contract risk remains despite the two audits listed, since liquid staking relies on code holding large amounts of ETH.
  • Node operators can be penalised (slashed) or earn less if they run validators poorly, which can affect rETH value.
  • rETH carries market risk: it can trade at a discount or premium to its underlying ETH value on secondary markets.
  • Running a node requires technical skill, hardware and an ETH deposit, plus RPL exposure, which is a barrier for many users.
  • Fee levels, commission rates and RPL staking requirements are not stated publicly reviewed, so cost comparisons need checking at source.

Rocket Pool fees

Fee details are not included publicly reviewed. Rocket Pool's commission rates, node operator fees and any protocol costs are not published here.

Users should check the official site and documentation for current commission rates, and expect to pay normal Ethereum network gas fees when staking, unstaking or swapping rETH.

Is Rocket Pool safe?

DeFiLlama lists two audits for Rocket Pool and describes the contracts as audited with minimised penalty risk. The project does not name the auditors or give audit dates, so readers should consult the official documentation for reports.

Stakers hold rETH in their own wallet, but their ETH sits in protocol smart contracts, so contract risk applies. Validator penalties and market price deviations of rETH are further risks. The project does not mention any incidents or regulatory status, so check current information before depositing.

6 steps

How to get started with Rocket Pool

  1. 1

Decide whether you want to stake ETH for rETH or run a node as an operator.

  2. 2

Use the official Rocket Pool website and verify the address before connecting a wallet.

  3. 3

Connect an Ethereum wallet holding ETH and enough extra for gas fees.

  4. 4

For liquid staking, deposit ETH and receive rETH, then keep track of it in your wallet.

  5. 5

For node operation, read the documentation on hardware, ETH and RPL requirements before depositing.

  6. 6

Start with an amount you can afford to lose while you learn how the protocol works.

Who Rocket Pool is for

Rocket Pool is for ETH holders who want staking rewards without running a validator, and for technically comfortable users who want to operate a node with a smaller ETH deposit. It is less suited to people who cannot accept smart-contract risk or want fixed, guaranteed returns.

Rocket Pool FAQs

What is Rocket Pool?

Rocket Pool is a decentralised Ethereum staking protocol. It offers liquid staking, where you receive rETH for ETH, and node staking, where operators run validators for the pool.

What is rETH?

rETH is the liquid staking token that stakers receive when they deposit ETH into the Rocket Pool staking pool. It represents a share of the staked ETH pool and can be held or used elsewhere in DeFi.

How much ETH does it take to run a Rocket Pool node?

The DeFiLlama description says Rocket Pool nodes only need to deposit 16 ETH per validator, compared with the 32 ETH solo stakers must provide. The rest of the validator's ETH comes from the staking pool. Current requirements, including any RPL needed, should be confirmed on the official site.

What is the RPL token?

Public sources list RPL as the protocol's token. Its exact role and current requirements are not detailed publicly, so check the official documentation.

Is Rocket Pool safe?

No staking protocol is risk-free. Rocket Pool lists two audits on DeFiLlama, but smart-contract bugs, validator penalties and rETH price deviations remain possible risks.

Which blockchain does Rocket Pool use?

Public sources only show that it runs on Ethereum. The protocol is aimed at the Ethereum ecosystem as described on its homepage.
