Steem is a blockchain designed around social publishing. It launched in 2016 on Graphene technology, a toolkit built for fast blockchains, and it has its own account system rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Consensus is delegated proof of stake. Token holders vote for a limited group of witnesses who produce the blocks, which keeps confirmations quick enough for posting, commenting and voting.

The network's main token is STEEM. It is used for rewards, and holders can stake it for influence and for capacity on the network. Steem does not work on a typical pay-per-transaction model. Instead, how much an account can do depends on the amount it has staked. We have no current price or DeFi TVL figure for the chain, so we do not quote any here.

Steem is best known for Steemit, a Reddit-style site where writers and commenters earn token rewards based on community votes. Other interfaces and community tools have been built on the same chain, but the ecosystem leans toward content and social apps rather than trading or lending. There are no Steem dApps on our site yet, so this page serves as background until we add and review some.

Steem FAQs

What is Steem?

Steem is a blockchain built for social media and content publishing. People post articles, images and comments, and other users can vote on them. Those votes decide how rewards in the STEEM token are shared. Steemit is the best-known site built on it.

Is Steem an EVM chain?

No. Steem is built on Graphene technology and has its own design, so it is not an EVM chain. Ethereum-style smart contracts and wallets do not work on it directly. Apps are built against Steem's own tools and account system.

How does Steem reach consensus?

Steem uses delegated proof of stake. Token holders vote for a small set of block producers, called witnesses, who take turns confirming blocks. Blocks arrive every few seconds, which suits a platform where people post and vote all the time.

Does Steem have transaction fees?

Steem does not charge a per-transaction fee in the usual sense. Activity is limited by a resource system tied to how much STEEM an account has staked, a position often called Steem Power. Accounts with little staked can do less before they hit their limit.

Why are there no dApps listed for Steem?

We list no Steem dApps at the moment, so there are no reviews here yet. Steem's ecosystem is centered on social and content apps rather than DeFi, and we have no TVL figure for it. This page will fill in if we add Steem projects.

Is Steem the same as Hive?

Steem is not the same as Hive. Hive was created in 2020 as a fork of Steem after a community dispute over control of the network. The two chains now run separately with their own tokens and communities. Check which one an app uses before connecting a wallet.

Which dApp on Steem has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Dtube has the highest score at 5.5/10. Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
