## What is ZAR Universal (ZARU)?

ZAR Universal (ZARU) is a stablecoin designed to track the value of the South African rand, with one ZARU intended to represent one rand. Unlike a token whose price is meant to rise, ZARU’s stated purpose is to provide a digital representation of a national currency for payments and settlement.

ZARU is issued by BlockTower South Africa (Pty) Ltd, which is described as a Financial Services Provider authorised by South Africa’s Financial Sector Conduct Authority. The issuer says each circulating token is backed by rand-denominated reserves held in segregated accounts at Standard Bank of South Africa. Sanlam Specialised Asset Manager oversees reserve management, and Moore Johannesburg Inc. conducts monthly independent reserve attestations.

These details describe the stated backing and oversight arrangements; they do not mean the token is risk-free or that its market price will always equal exactly one rand. An attestation is also not the same as a guarantee from a bank or government.

## What is ZARU used for?

ZARU is intended to support digital payments and settlement using the South African rand. Its stated target users include financial institutions, payment service providers and fintech companies, as well as businesses involved in cross-border commerce in Africa. In practice, a stablecoin can be used to transfer value between compatible wallets or applications, but whether a particular service accepts ZARU depends on that service.

The project describes ZARU as settlement infrastructure, rather than a general-purpose network token. It is not the native token of the blockchains on which it is issued, and holding it does not by itself provide rights to a company, interest, or a share of reserve income. Public sources do not establish specific consumer payment features, redemption terms, fees, or how quickly a holder can exchange ZARU for bank-held rand.

Before relying on ZARU for a payment, check that the recipient supports the exact token and network you plan to use. A transfer to an incompatible address or chain may be difficult or impossible to recover.

## Supply and supported blockchains

ZARU is issued on Solana, Ethereum, Base and Arc. These are separate blockchain networks, so a token on one network should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a token on another without a supported transfer method. ZARU is not listed as the native token of any of these chains.

As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating and total supply was about 60.9 million ZARU. No maximum supply was specified. The same date’s reported price was about $0.061, close to the value of one South African rand at that time; both market prices and supply can change. The price shown on a trading venue may differ from the intended one-rand peg, especially if liquidity is limited or market conditions shift.

When receiving or sending ZARU, confirm the network and token details in the wallet or service you are using. Do not rely on a ticker alone: different assets can share similar names or symbols, and an unsupported network choice can lead to a lost transfer.

## Risks and storage

ZARU carries issuer and reserve risk. Its intended rand backing depends on the issuer’s reserve arrangements, the quality and availability of the reserves, and the processes for issuing and redeeming tokens. The stated monthly reserve attestations provide information about reserves, but they do not remove the possibility of operational, legal, banking or liquidity problems. The peg can also deviate from one rand on a trading market.

There are blockchain risks too. A wallet error, compromised private key, network outage, smart-contract flaw or transaction sent on the wrong chain may result in loss. If a holder uses a bridge or third-party exchange, that service adds its own custody and technical risks. The information here does not specify ZARU’s redemption process or identify verified wallet apps, so check those details with the issuer or service before relying on them.

Store ZARU only in a wallet that explicitly supports the relevant network and token. Keep recovery phrases private and offline, and verify the destination address and network before confirming a transaction.

By the numbers

ZAR Universal in numbers

ZAR Universal (ZARU) is ranked #1,902 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $3.66M and a price of $0.0601 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($3.66M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 0.5% over 7 days, up 0.2% over 30 days. It trades about 10% below its all-time high of $0.0668, set on Nov 5, 2026.

About 60.92M ZARU are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $140K, or 3.8% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

ZARU has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including Solana, Base, Ethereum, Arc. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
