What Astar is
Astar is described by its own team as a web3 collective that builds products meant to bring users onchain. It runs as a multichain ecosystem, with products and contributors coordinated through a shared economic and governance framework.
Astar Network is the collective's own blockchain. It anchors governance and runs dApp Staking, while the collective's products launch on whichever chains their users already use. Data aggregators classify the network as a smart contract platform and list it under both Layer 1 and Layer 2 headings, as well as the Polkadot and Ethereum ecosystems. That reflects the project's history and its multichain approach more than one clean technical label.
The first product in what Astar calls the Astar Stack is Astar Fi, an onchain personal finance manager incubated by the collective. It aims to show a user's onchain net worth in one view and then let them earn and invest from the same place. It starts on Ethereum and Base.
ASTR is the token that ties the ecosystem together. It is the economic and governance token of Astar and is used mainly on Astar Network.
What ASTR is used for
According to the project, ASTR is used on Astar Network for staking and onchain governance. Public descriptions of the token also list payment of transaction fees, so ASTR works as the gas token on the network.
dApp Staking. This is the feature most associated with Astar. Holders lock ASTR behind applications built on the network, and those applications can earn rewards based on the support they attract. Stakers can also receive a share of rewards. The idea is to steer incentives toward apps people actually use, rather than leaving developers to fund growth alone.
Network fees. Users spend ASTR to pay for transactions and contract calls on Astar Network.
Governance. ASTR holders can take part in proposing and voting on decisions about the ecosystem, in line with the project's governance framework.
The exact reward rates, lock-up rules and voting thresholds can change through governance, so anyone considering using them should check the current documentation inside the official apps rather than relying on older articles. Details about how Astar Fi uses ASTR, if at all, are not stated in the material available here.
Supply and tokenomics
At the time of writing, the maximum supply is listed as 10 billion ASTR. About 8.82 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, with a total supply of roughly 8.83 billion. Because the circulating figure is so close to the cap, the fully diluted valuation is about the same as the market cap, around $47.8 million. The token ranked about 463rd by market cap.
The price was about $0.0054 as of 2026-11-05. The token had fallen roughly 11% over the previous seven days and about 60% over the previous year. Its all-time high was about $0.42 on 2022-01-17, and its all-time low of about $0.0044 was recorded on 2026-08-18. Daily trading volume was around $771,000, which is thin relative to its market cap.
the public information available here do not give a detailed breakdown of allocations, vesting schedules or the current inflation rate. Public tokenomics write-ups mention staking rewards and fee mechanics, but the exact emission and burn settings have changed over time and are set by governance. Check the latest official documentation before drawing conclusions about dilution.
Chains, holding and trading
ASTR is the native token of the Astar chain, where it pays fees and is used for dApp Staking and governance. There is also an ASTR token issued on Ethereum, which is how many people encounter it on exchanges and in Ethereum wallets.
In practice, ASTR can be held in two forms: as the native asset on Astar Network, or as an Ethereum-issued token. They are not interchangeable without moving funds across a bridge or through an exchange that supports the specific network you choose. Sending ASTR to the wrong network is a common and often unrecoverable mistake, so always check which network a deposit address supports.
Trading mostly happens on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on the chains where the token exists. Given the modest daily volume at the time of writing, large orders can move the price noticeably, and spreads may be wider than on bigger tokens.
To use dApp Staking or governance, you need the native token in a wallet that supports Astar Network. Hold a small amount for fees as well.
History and notable events
The launch date is not given in the data here, so this section sticks to what is clear. Astar grew out of the Polkadot ecosystem, and aggregators still list it under that heading. Its market peak came on 2022-01-17, when the token reached about $0.42, in the broader crypto boom of that period.
Data aggregators also list Astar in the portfolios of several well-known crypto investors, including Alameda Research, YZi Labs (previously Binance Labs) and OKX Ventures. Alameda's later collapse is a matter of public record, but this listing does not tell us how it affected Astar specifically, so treat it as background only.
More recently, the project has described itself as a web3 collective rather than only a smart contract chain. It now talks about a multichain approach and a product suite, the Astar Stack, with Astar Fi as the first product. That is a change of emphasis from the earlier pitch of a single hub for building decentralized applications.
The token hit a new all-time low in August 2026, about a year after tokenomics commentary was published in late 2025.
Risks to understand
Price risk. ASTR was down roughly 60% over the year to 2026-11-05 and sits near its all-time low, about 99% below its 2022 peak. Prices can fall further, and nothing here is a forecast or a suggestion to buy or sell.
Liquidity risk. Daily volume of under a million dollars means exits can be costly, especially for larger holders.
Strategy risk. The project has shifted from a chain-centred identity toward a multichain collective and a product suite. Whether Astar Fi or later products attract users, and whether that benefits ASTR holders, is not established.
Smart contract and bridge risk. Staking contracts, decentralized exchanges and any bridge used to move ASTR between networks can all contain bugs or be exploited.
Governance and supply risk. Staking rewards and token emission can be changed by governance, which can affect dilution and returns. Staking rewards are not guaranteed, and locked tokens may take time to withdraw.
Counterparty risk. Tokens left on an exchange are subject to that exchange's solvency and policies.
How to store ASTR safely
Choose a wallet that explicitly supports the network you intend to use: Astar Network for the native token, or Ethereum for the Ethereum-issued version. Check the official project documentation to confirm the current wallet options, because support changes over time.
For anything beyond a small amount, a hardware wallet adds protection by keeping your private keys offline. Write your recovery phrase on paper, store it somewhere secure and never type it into a website, share it in a chat or photograph it. No legitimate support person will ask for it.
Before sending a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm that it arrives on the right network. When connecting to a staking or governance app, check that you are on the genuine site, since fake copies and phishing links are common around popular tokens. Review any permission a dApp requests, and revoke approvals you no longer need.
If you stake, understand the unbonding period and any fees before locking funds, and keep a little ASTR unstaked to pay for transactions.
By the numbers
Astar in numbers
Astar (ASTR) is ranked #463 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $46.0M and a price of $0.005215 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($46.0M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 13.2% over 7 days, down 27.0% over 30 days, down 63.7% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $0.4216, set on Jan 17, 2022.
About 8.83B ASTR are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10B (88% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $2.44M, or 5.3% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
ASTR is the native token of Astar; it also has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
CoinGecko groups ASTR under Layer 1 tokens, Layer 2 tokens.
