Our verdict on Volmex
7.0/10Volmex suits traders, quant teams and builders who want a recognized benchmark for crypto implied volatility, plus access to products that settle to it. Its main strength is the BVIV and EVIV index family, with a free API tier and clear paid plans. The main caveat is that trading happens on third-party venues, some offering up to 100x leverage, so you carry their risks too. The small onchain TVL suggests the protocol side is modest compared with the data business.

What is Volmex?
Volmex builds benchmark indices for crypto, led by BVIV (Bitcoin 30-day implied volatility), BVIV-US (based on IBIT options) and EVIV (Ethereum). The homepage describes more than 300 live indices, including realized volatility, correlation, bull and bear IV and a prime rate index. DefiLlama describes it as a tokenized volatility protocol built on Ethereum, and lists it on Arbitrum, Ethereum and Polygon.
The company's role today looks like a data and benchmark business. It sells API access, and third-party venues list tradable products that settle to its prints. The homepage cites a first bilateral OTC option on BVIV by Arbelos Markets and B2C2 in June 2024, and Polymarket volatility markets settling to BVIV and EVIV since January 2026.
DefiLlama shows TVL of about $131,386, no token, and two listed audits. That suggests the onchain protocol side is small compared with the index and data side.
How Volmex works
Volmex calculates implied-volatility indices from option quotes across leading venues. Implied volatility is the market's expectation of how much an asset will move, and a 30-day reading summarizes that expectation for the next month. BVIV covers Bitcoin, BVIV-US uses IBIT options for US trading hours, and EVIV covers Ethereum.
The indices are published as data feeds and through an API. Other platforms then build products that settle to those prints. According to the homepage, these include perpetual futures on Bitfinex and Hyperliquid, onchain perpetuals on Base and Arbitrum, Orderly-based perps, and Polymarket volatility prediction markets.
A trader who expects volatility to rise can take a long position on such a product without trading options directly. Settlement depends on the index print, so the quality of the methodology matters. Volmex also lists prime rate indices that blend DeFi lending and perpetual funding rates.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Publishes a clearly defined family of crypto volatility indices with methodology papers available.
- BVIV and EVIV settle products on several venue types: centralized, onchain and prediction markets.
- A free API tier exists for research and individual builders.
- Paid plans list a 14-day free trial and transparent monthly pricing.
- The homepage reports coverage of BVIV by CoinDesk, The Block and Bloomberg, and distribution via TradingView, Bloomberg and LSEG.
- Two audits are listed on DefiLlama.
Watch out for
- The DefiLlama TVL is only about $131,000, so the onchain footprint is small next to the index business.
- Leveraged products on linked venues go up to 100x, which can wipe out a position quickly.
- Volmex does not run most of the trading venues itself, so counterparty and smart-contract risk depends on each third party.
- Full real-time data requires paid plans of $199 or $999 per month.
- Public sources list two audits but do not say who performed them or what they covered.
- The DefiLlama description (tokenized volatility protocol) differs from how the homepage now presents the company, which may confuse newcomers.
Volmex fees
Volmex publishes its data subscription pricing. The public tier is free and needs only a free API key. The BVIV package is $199 per month, Pro is $999 per month with a 14-day free trial on both, and Enterprise pricing is custom and quoted on request. Annual billing is listed with a 20% saving.
Trading fees, funding rates and spreads for the BVIV and EVIV products are not public. They are set by each venue, such as Hyperliquid, Bitfinex, gTrade or Orderly, so users would see them on the venue's own fee schedule.
Is Volmex safe?
Volmex mostly acts as an index and data provider, so the main risks sit with the venues where products trade. Each of those, such as Hyperliquid, Bitfinex, gTrade or Orderly, has its own custody model, smart-contract risk and regulatory status, none of which public sources describe. DefiLlama lists two audits for Volmex but gives no auditor names or scope, and no hacks or incidents are mentioned publicly.
Index-linked settlement means traders depend on the accuracy and availability of the Volmex feed. Leveraged volatility products are volatile and high risk. Check that trading derivatives is legal where you live, and never risk money you cannot afford to lose.
6 steps
How to get started with Volmex
- 1
Open the indices section and read the methodology papers for BVIV, BVIV-US and EVIV so you understand what the numbers measure.
- 2
Request a free API key if you only need research data or want to build on public indices.
- 3
If you need realtime or intraday data, compare the BVIV package and Pro plan and start the 14-day free trial.
- 4
If you want market exposure, review the list of venues and pick one, checking its leverage limits, fees and availability in your region.
- 5
Start with small size, and treat leveraged volatility products as high risk.
- 6
Confirm that the venue's terms and local regulations allow you to trade derivatives.
Who Volmex is for
Volmex fits volatility traders, analysts, quant teams and developers who want a reference for crypto implied volatility, either as data or as the settlement basis for perpetuals and prediction markets. It is less suited to beginners, since the linked products are leveraged and need a grasp of volatility.
Volmex FAQs
What is BVIV?
BVIV is Volmex's 30-day implied-volatility index for Bitcoin, derived from option quotes across leading venues. It is often described as a fear gauge for crypto markets. EVIV is the equivalent index for Ethereum.
Is Volmex an exchange?
Volmex is mainly an index provider. It publishes volatility, prime rate, realized volatility and correlation indices, and sells data access. Trading happens on other venues that settle to Volmex prints, and the homepage lists Hyperliquid, Bitfinex, gTrade, Orderly and Polymarket among them.
Can I get Volmex data for free?
The homepage lists a free public API key with REST access to BVIV, EVIV, MVIV and public indices at 60-minute and daily resolutions. Paid tiers add realtime data, intraday resolutions and WebSocket access.
How much does Volmex cost?
The BVIV package costs $199 per month and covers realtime BVIV and BVIV-US across all terms. Pro costs $999 per month and adds EVIV, SVIV, MVIV, realized volatility and Prime Rate indices. Both list a 14-day free trial, and Enterprise pricing is custom.
How much leverage can I use on BVIV products?
Leverage depends on the venue: up to 5x on Hyperliquid, 10x on Orderly, 20x on the centralized exchange and 100x on gTrade (Base and Arbitrum). High leverage carries a large risk of losing your whole position, so check the terms on each venue first.
Does Volmex have a token?
The project does not establish that. Volmex is shown with a Yield category on DefiLlama and no token of its own. Product availability can depend on your location, so check each venue's terms and local rules before trading.
