USK Review 2026: Kujira's Overcollateralised CDP Stablecoin

USK is the overcollateralised, USD-pegged stablecoin of the Kujira blockchain, minted by locking crypto collateral in a debt position. It suits users already in the Kujira ecosystem, but it carries the usual CDP liquidation risk on a small chain.

Our verdict on USK

6.1/10

USK is a sensible choice for users already on Kujira who want to borrow a dollar-pegged asset against KUJI or other supported collateral without selling it. Its main strengths are the overcollateralised design, on-chain liquidations through ORCA and a listed contract audit report. The main caveat is that it lives on a small chain with limited collateral options and no published fee figures, so liquidation and peg risk are real. Newcomers should keep a wide safety margin.

What is USK?

USK is a stablecoin on the Kujira blockchain, listed as a decentralised, overcollateralised, USD-pegged asset. It is minted by users who deposit collateral into a debt position, rather than being issued against bank reserves.

Kujira announced USK in August 2022 as a soft-pegged stablecoin for the Cosmos ecosystem, first backed by ATOM, with KUJI to be added. The project has since been listed on DefiLlama since January 2023 under CDP protocols. It has no separate governance token.

USK sits inside a wider Kujira product set that includes the FIN exchange and the ORCA liquidation system. This makes it more useful for users already active on Kujira than for those who only want a general-purpose stablecoin.

How USK works

USK is created through collateralised debt positions. A user deposits collateral on the Kujira chain, which opens a loan, and mints USK against it. Because the debt must stay below the collateral's value, the system is overcollateralised. Early announcements said USK was first backed by ATOM, with KUJI to follow.

If the collateral drops in value and the position becomes too risky, it can be liquidated. Kujira's liquidation system, ORCA, lets bidders place bids on that collateral, so the debt is covered and the stablecoin stays backed. Users can manage their position and loan-to-value by adding collateral or repaying USK, and can close it by repaying what they owe.

USK also connects to other Kujira products. A contract lets users open leveraged limit orders on the FIN exchange by minting USK, and Kujira campaigns have offered ways to obtain USK.

Key features

01

Collateralised debt positions

Users lock collateral to open a collateralised debt position and mint USK against it. Debt must stay below a loan-to-value limit.

02

Overcollateralised design

The stablecoin is issued only against collateral worth more than the debt, giving a buffer against price drops.

03

ORCA liquidation bids

Liquidated collateral is sold through ORCA, Kujira's liquidation system where bidders place bids to buy it, often at a discount.

04

Leveraged limit orders

A Kujira contract lets users open leveraged limit orders on the FIN exchange by minting USK, tying the stablecoin into trading.

05

Cosmos-native collateral

Early announcements said USK launched backed by ATOM, with KUJI planned later, linking it to the Cosmos ecosystem.

06

Published audit report

A contract audit report for the USK stablecoin contracts is published in a public repository for users to read.

07

Ecosystem incentives

Kujira has run PILOT seasons that offered ways to obtain USK, showing it is used in ecosystem launches.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Overcollateralised design gives a buffer between collateral value and minted debt
  • Described as fully decentralised, minted through on-chain debt positions rather than a company's reserves
  • Integrated with Kujira products such as FIN limit orders and ORCA liquidations
  • A contract audit report for USK is publicly listed
  • Public documentation and minting guides explain how to open and manage a position

Watch out for

  • Collateral is limited to assets on the Kujira and Cosmos ecosystem, which are smaller and less liquid than major Ethereum assets, so liquidations can be harder to absorb
  • Stability depends on liquidation bidders and on collateral prices staying liquid; a fast drop can leave positions undercollateralised
  • The audit report is listed, but the auditor, scope and findings are not stated
  • Fees, interest rates and liquidation penalties are not stated here, so borrowers must check the interface
  • Using USK requires a Cosmos-style wallet and the Kujira chain, which is less familiar to many DeFi users
  • No current TVL or usage figures are available, so real-world depth of the peg is hard to judge

USK fees

The material does not publish USK fee figures such as an interest rate on minted debt, a minting fee or a liquidation penalty. Users would see these in the Kujira app when opening a position, and in the Kujira documentation.

On-chain transactions on Kujira also cost network gas. The documentation says users do not need to spend a specific token for every transaction. Check the current terms before borrowing.

Is USK safe?

A contract audit report for the USK stablecoin contracts is published in a public repository. The material does not state who performed the audit, what it covered or what it found, so readers should review the report directly. DefiLlama lists no audits for USK, so the report is the only audit evidence here.

The main risks are smart-contract bugs, liquidation failures during sharp price falls, loss of the dollar peg, and the relative thinness of the Kujira ecosystem. Collateral stays in on-chain contracts and you control your own wallet, so wallet security and your own loan-to-value management matter. No regulatory status or incident history is stated in the material.

6 steps

How to get started with USK

  1. 1

Set up a wallet that supports Cosmos-based chains and the Kujira network, and keep your recovery phrase offline.

  2. 2

Acquire a supported collateral asset on Kujira, such as KUJI or ATOM, and confirm the current list in the Kujira app.

  3. 3

Read the Kujira documentation on minting USK, including how loan-to-value and liquidation thresholds work.

  4. 4

Open a position by depositing collateral and minting a conservative amount of USK, keeping a wide buffer from the liquidation level.

  5. 5

Monitor your position and collateral price regularly, and add collateral or repay debt if the ratio worsens.

  6. 6

Repay the USK and close the position when you want your collateral back.

Who USK is for

USK suits users of the Kujira and Cosmos ecosystem who hold KUJI or other supported assets and want to borrow stablecoins against them, as well as traders who want to use USK in FIN leveraged limit orders. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking a stablecoin with deep multi-chain liquidity or fiat reserves.

USK FAQs

What is USK?

USK is a stablecoin on the Kujira blockchain that aims to track the US dollar. It is described as fully decentralised and overcollateralised, meaning it is issued against crypto collateral worth more than the USK minted.

How do you mint USK?

You deposit collateral, which opens a collateralised debt position, and mint USK against it. Early announcements said USK was first backed by ATOM, with KUJI to be added later. Check the current list of accepted collateral in the Kujira app.

Is USK backed one-to-one by dollars?

Not necessarily. USK is described as overcollateralised and soft-pegged to the dollar. The peg relies on collateral value, liquidations and market arbitrage, so it can drift from one dollar in stressed markets.

What happens if my collateral price falls?

If the value of your collateral falls so that your loan-to-value ratio becomes too high, your position can be liquidated. Kujira's liquidation system, called ORCA, lets bidders offer to buy liquidated collateral. You can reduce risk by keeping a low LTV or repaying debt.

Has USK been audited?

One audit report for the USK stablecoin contracts is listed in a public repository. The material does not name the auditor or summarise the findings, so read the report itself. An audit does not remove smart-contract or market risk.

Does USK have its own governance token?

No. DefiLlama lists USK with no separate token. USK itself is the stablecoin, while KUJI is the separate native token of the Kujira chain.
