Our verdict on Shiba Inu
5.0/10Shiba Inu suits readers who want to understand one of the best-known meme coins or who already accept high-risk speculation. Its strengths are Ethereum compatibility, wide recognition and an ecosystem that includes a DEX and a governance token. The main caveat is that its value rests on community sentiment, not a business model, and the founder is anonymous. Sources describe a huge 2021 run followed by a deep fall, so treat it as a speculative asset and do your own research before buying.

What is Shiba Inu?
Shiba Inu is a dog-themed meme cryptocurrency that runs on Ethereum. It was first announced in August 2020 by an anonymous founder going by Ryoshi, who positioned it as a rival to Dogecoin.
The project is built around a community called the Shiba Army and a small token ecosystem: SHIB, LEASH and BONE. It also operates ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange launched in July 2021.
SHIB's popularity spiked in 2021. One source reports a market capitalization above 13.5 billion dollars in May 2021, while another cites a record price in October 2021. Both note that values have fallen since. The official homepage was not available to check, so details such as audits, team and fees are not confirmed here.
How Shiba Inu works
SHIB is an ERC-20 token, meaning it is a balance recorded by a smart contract on Ethereum. Anyone with an Ethereum wallet can hold or send it, and it trades against other assets on exchanges and through liquidity pools.
According to the sources, the founder created one quadrillion tokens, placed half in a liquidity pool and sent the other half to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who reportedly burned most of it and donated part to charity. Burning removes tokens from circulation permanently.
ShibaSwap is the project's decentralized exchange. Liquidity pools on a DEX let users trade tokens against pooled funds without an order book, and liquidity providers earn a share of fees. The project also uses BONE as a governance token so holders can vote on proposals.

Key features
01
ERC-20 meme token
SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with a total supply of one quadrillion, which gives it a very small per-token price.
02
ShibaSwap DEX
ShibaSwap launched in July 2021 as the project's decentralized exchange for swapping tokens and related features.
03
LEASH scarce token
LEASH has a supply of only about 107,000 tokens and was designed as a scarce, luxury-style token, according to sources.
04
BONE governance token
BONE is the governance token that gives the community a vote on upcoming proposals.
05
Community-led growth
The Shiba Army fan base is a core part of the project, with a presence across major social media platforms.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Runs on Ethereum, so it works with standard wallets and DeFi tools
- Widely known brand with a large, active community
- Listed on several major exchanges, according to sources
- Includes a governance token (BONE) that lets holders vote on proposals
- Has its own DEX, ShibaSwap, in addition to the token
Watch out for
- Price is driven by community sentiment and speculation, not by a revenue model or cash flows
- Launched as a joke-style coin by an anonymous founder, so there is no named, accountable team in the sources
- Reported all-time highs came in 2021 and the market cap has fallen sharply from that peak
- The very large supply of one quadrillion tokens means the price per token is tiny and easily misread as cheap
- Multiple tokens (SHIB, LEASH, BONE) can confuse newcomers about which one they hold
- Audits, fee schedules and licensing details are not published in the material reviewed
Shiba Inu fees
The project's fee schedule is not published in the sources reviewed. SHIB is a standard Ethereum token, so transfers and swaps on Ethereum pay network gas fees, which vary with congestion.
Trading on ShibaSwap or a centralized exchange will carry swap or trading fees set by that venue. Users should check the fee display in the swap interface or the exchange's fee page before trading.
Is Shiba Inu safe?
SHIB is a standard Ethereum token, so its core risk is market risk rather than custody: the price can move sharply, and there is no promise of returns. The founder is anonymous, and the sources reviewed do not mention audits, insurance or any regulatory licence.
Using ShibaSwap or any DeFi product adds smart-contract risk, as well as risks from token approvals and fake tokens that copy the name. Verify contract addresses and keep recovery phrases offline. Crypto rules differ by country, so check what applies where you live.
6 steps
How to get started with Shiba Inu
- 1
Read up on the difference between SHIB, LEASH and BONE and decide whether you want exposure at all.
- 2
Set up an Ethereum-compatible wallet and keep the recovery phrase offline.
- 3
Confirm the official SHIB contract address from the project's own channels to avoid look-alike tokens.
- 4
Buy SHIB on a reputable exchange or swap for it on a DEX, checking fees and slippage first.
- 5
Start with a small amount you can afford to lose and avoid buying on hype or price-target videos.
- 6
If you use ShibaSwap, review each action and token approval before signing.
Who Shiba Inu is for
Shiba Inu is for crypto-curious users who understand meme-coin risk and want exposure to a well-known community token or its ecosystem. It is not suited to anyone seeking stable income, a regulated product or capital preservation.
Shiba Inu FAQs
What is Shiba Inu (SHIB)?
Shiba Inu is a community-driven meme cryptocurrency themed on the Japanese dog breed. The SHIB token was announced in August 2020 by an anonymous founder known as Ryoshi and runs on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token.
Who created Shiba Inu?
The name Ryoshi is a pseudonym, and the identity of the person or group behind it has not been established in the sources. Reports say Ryoshi stated they gave up their interest in the coin.
What are SHIB, LEASH and BONE?
The ecosystem has three tokens: SHIB, the main widely traded coin; LEASH, a far scarcer token that was originally designed as a rebase token; and BONE, the governance token that lets holders vote on proposals.
What is ShibaSwap?
ShibaSwap is the project's decentralized exchange, launched on July 6, 2021. Users can swap tokens and use features such as burying tokens, which the project describes as temporarily locking them away.
Is Shiba Inu a good investment?
SHIB is a highly speculative meme asset with no guaranteed utility or return. Sources describe a huge rise in 2021 followed by a large fall, so anyone considering it should only risk money they can afford to lose and not rely on price predictions.
Where can SHIB be bought?
Reports say SHIB is listed on several major centralized exchanges, and it can also be traded on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum. Check the contract address on official channels before buying to avoid fake tokens.
