ActiveKlimaDAO Review 2026: Fee-Free On-Chain Carbon Retirement
KlimaDAO now operates as Klima Protocol, a rules-based system on Base for supplying and retiring voluntary carbon credits on-chain. Its main draw is traceable retirement with no protocol fees; its main limit is that credits can only be retired, never withdrawn or resold.

Our verdict on KlimaDAO
7.0/10KlimaDAO, now Klima Protocol, suits crypto-literate buyers, suppliers and builders who want traceable, on-chain retirement of voluntary carbon credits without protocol fees. Its main strength is a transparent, rules-based design with public proof of retirement. The main caveat is that credits are locked in a one-way system, rates depend on token-holder allocations, and the audit details are not published on the homepage. Read the docs and audit reports before committing funds.

What is KlimaDAO?
KlimaDAO began in 2021 as a project to bring carbon credits on-chain, and it is listed as a real-world asset protocol on Polygon and Base. Its current homepage presents it as Klima Protocol, open infrastructure for carbon markets that emphasises transparency, instant execution and traceable impact.
The protocol describes its function as deliberately narrow: publish the terms for supplying and retiring voluntary carbon credits, apply them to every participant, and settle without discretionary intervention. It states that it is not a financial product, an investment vehicle or an asset management system.
The homepage cites five supported registries and names Carbonmark as a platform that uses its liquidity. The Klima Labs site shows use cases and protocol data, and builders can integrate through APIs and docs. The homepage says the protocol is audited, but does not name the auditor or give dates.
How KlimaDAO works
Klima Protocol uses smart contracts to publish the terms on which carbon credits can be supplied and retired. A supplier who delivers eligible registry-issued credits receives kVCM at a rate published in real time. A buyer who pays kVCM to retire credits gets a rate produced the same way.
kVCM is the unit of account. Its supply grows when carbon enters the protocol and shrinks when carbon is retired. Participants who lock tokens and allocate them across carbon classes determine the rates and each class's capacity. K2 is the secondary governance and incentive token used to adjust that capacity.
Retirement is the only exit. Credits cannot be withdrawn, reversed or relisted elsewhere, which keeps the supply chain auditable from purchase to retirement.
8 features
Key features
01
Rules-based pricing
Smart contracts publish execution rates from the protocol's own state, so suppliers and buyers see the same terms.
02
Traceable retirement
Transactions are recorded on a public ledger from purchase to retirement, with on-chain proof of retirement.
03
No protocol fees
The protocol says it charges no retirement fees to the Foundation, developers or operators. Network costs still apply.
04
Carbon classes
Credits are grouped into standardised carbon classes so pricing reflects quality attributes such as methodology and vintage.
05
Token-based governance
Participants who lock tokens and allocate them across carbon classes set rates and each class's capacity.
06
Supplier onboarding
Suppliers bridge registry-issued credits into the protocol and receive kVCM at the published rate. The homepage cites five supported registries.
07
Builder tools
Carbonmark uses the protocol's liquidity, and an x402 endpoint co-developed with Carbonmark enables agentic interactions. APIs and docs are available for builders.
08
Liquidity provision
Users can provide liquidity to the ecosystem and earn trading fees, with Aerodrome listed as a venue.
Pros and cons
What we like
- No protocol fees on retirement, according to the project
- Public ledger gives traceability from purchase to retirement, with on-chain proof
- Self-custody design with rules published by smart contracts rather than a procurement desk
- Standardised carbon classes with documented registry, methodology and vintage
- Open APIs, docs and an x402 endpoint for builders
- Runs on Base, where network costs are typically low
Watch out for
- Credits cannot be withdrawn, reversed or resold once they enter the protocol, so retirement is a one-way action
- Price and capacity depend on how token holders allocate locked tokens, which adds governance and token-market risk
- Buyers must handle kVCM and on-chain transactions, which suits crypto-literate users better than corporate procurement teams
- Network costs still apply even though the protocol charges no fee
- The older Polygon-era KLIMA token has traded at very low prices, and the project's history makes the current design less proven
- The audit scope, auditor and date are not stated on the homepage
KlimaDAO fees
The protocol states that it charges no fees on retirement transactions, and nothing is payable to the Klima Foundation, a development entity or an operator. It also says there is no dollar-denominated revenue stream inside the protocol.
Onchain network costs still apply. Liquidity providers can earn trading fees from market activity, and third-party platforms built on the protocol may set their own pricing. Those terms are not published on the homepage.
Is KlimaDAO safe?
The homepage lists the protocol as audited and self-custody, but it does not name the auditor, scope or date. DefiLlama lists one audit. Smart-contract risk remains, as with any on-chain system, and users should read the audit reports in the docs before committing funds.
The project has a public bug bounty section and a DAO wallet policy in its documentation, according to search listings. Regulatory treatment of carbon credits and of kVCM and K2 is not discussed on the homepage. Readers should check the rules that apply to them and be aware that the original KLIMA token has traded at very low prices.
6 steps
How to get started with KlimaDAO
- 1
Read the protocol documentation to understand kVCM, K2 and carbon classes.
- 2
Check that the carbon class and registry you want meet your own reporting or compliance needs.
- 3
Set up a self-custody wallet that supports Base and fund it with a small amount of ETH for network costs.
- 4
Launch the app and review the real-time execution rates for your chosen carbon class.
- 5
Retire credits by paying kVCM, or supply eligible registry credits to receive kVCM.
- 6
Keep the on-chain retirement record as proof of the transaction.
Who KlimaDAO is for
Klima Protocol suits sustainability teams, carbon buyers and Web3 builders comfortable with wallets and on-chain transactions, as well as project developers who want to supply registry credits to a shared liquidity layer. It is less suited to anyone looking for a token to hold as an investment or for a simple fiat checkout.
KlimaDAO FAQs
What is KlimaDAO and Klima Protocol?
Klima Protocol is autonomous, rules-based infrastructure for retiring voluntary carbon credits, running on Base. It publishes the terms for supplying and retiring credits and settles activity through smart contracts. It describes itself as not a financial product or investment vehicle.
What are kVCM and K2?
kVCM is the protocol's main unit of account for carbon intake, retirement and governance deposits. Its supply expands when carbon enters and contracts when carbon is retired. K2 is the secondary governance and incentive token, used to adjust how much of each carbon class the protocol can process.
Does Klima Protocol charge fees?
The protocol says it charges no fees for retirement, and no fees go to the Klima Foundation, a development entity or an operator. Onchain network costs still apply. Third-party apps built on the protocol may have their own terms.
Can I withdraw or resell credits after they enter the protocol?
No. Retirement is the only way a credit leaves the protocol. There is no withdrawal path, reversal or re-listing on a secondary venue.
Which blockchains does it run on?
The homepage lists Base as the chain and Aerodrome as a liquidity venue. DefiLlama also lists Polygon, where the original KlimaDAO launched.
Can companies use it to offset emissions?
Buyers can use the app to retire carbon with on-chain proof of retirement, and Carbonmark is named as a platform that draws liquidity from the protocol. Check that the credit class and registry meet your own reporting or compliance requirements first.
