Our verdict on ELFi Protocol

5.8/10

ELFi Protocol suits experienced DeFi traders who want portfolio margining and pooled-liquidity perpetuals on Base or Arbitrum and who can judge smart-contract and leverage risk themselves. Its main strength is the account-level margin design combined with stablecoin yield products. The main caveats are small TVL of about $1.56 million, an official link that points to a testnet, no published fee details, and very high leverage. Newcomers should start on testnet or with small amounts.

What is ELFi Protocol?

ELFi Protocol is a decentralized derivatives exchange tracked by DefiLlama in the Derivatives category. It runs on Base and Arbitrum and has been listed since September 2024. Its homepage calls it an Ultra Portfolio Margin DEX.

The protocol is built around ELP, a liquidity design that supports trading and also funds yield products. DefiLlama says ELFi is the first platform to integrate portfolio margining with pooled trading. We could not verify that claim from public sources, which come from the project's own descriptions.

DefiLlama shows about $1.56 million in total value locked, up about 9% over seven days. That makes it a small venue next to the largest perpetuals DEXes. DefiLlama also lists two audits and no native token.

One caution on identity: public reporting for the ELFI ticker mostly show ELYFI, an unrelated real-world-asset project. The official link also points to a testnet address, so readers should confirm what is live on mainnet.

How ELFi Protocol works

ELFi is a decentralized derivatives exchange. Traders post collateral and open leveraged positions on crypto assets. Instead of matching buyers with sellers on an order book, trades are filled against a shared liquidity pool, which ELFi calls ELP. This is why the project describes trading as zero-slippage.

Liquidity providers deposit assets into the pool and earn yield, which comes from trading activity and possibly incentives. Because the pool acts as the counterparty, its returns rise when traders lose and fall when traders win. Stablecoin products are pitched as the lower-risk option, with other assets offering higher yield.

Portfolio margining is the project's main differentiator. Rather than requiring collateral for each position on its own, the account is assessed as a whole, so offsetting positions can need less margin. ELFi also offers isolated margin, where each position has its own collateral, and cross margin, where collateral is shared across positions.

7 features

Key features

01

ELP liquidity architecture

ELFi describes an ELP liquidity design that backs trading and also supplies yield products. This is the core of how the protocol sources liquidity.

02

Portfolio margining

The protocol says it combines portfolio margining with pooled trading, so risk is assessed at the account level rather than per position.

03

Isolated and cross margin

The homepage lists both isolated and cross margin, which lets traders choose between ring-fenced and shared collateral.

04

Stablecoin yield products

The protocol advertises stablecoin yield on USDT and USDC, and higher-yield products linked to non-stablecoin assets. Rates vary and are not stated publicly.

05

LSD restaking support

The homepage mentions liquid staking derivative restaking within its Ultra Portfolio feature, for users who hold LSD assets.

06

Zero-slippage execution

The project describes zero-slippage trading, since trades execute against the pool at oracle-style prices rather than an order book. The details are in the docs.

07

REST API

The docs list REST endpoints for protocol information, which is useful for developers and data tools.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Portfolio margining can improve capital efficiency for traders holding several positions
  • Offers both isolated and cross margin modes
  • Pooled liquidity means trades execute without order-book slippage, per the project
  • Yield products for USDT and USDC, plus higher-yield options linked to non-stablecoin assets
  • DefiLlama lists two audits for the protocol
  • Runs on Base and Arbitrum, where gas costs are lower than on Ethereum mainnet

Watch out for

  • The official site is a testnet address, so it is unclear how much of the product is live on mainnet and what the production interface looks like
  • Leverage of up to 1000x, as described in public reporting, can liquidate a position within moments
  • TVL is about $1.56 million, which is small for a derivatives venue and limits the depth of the pooled liquidity
  • Stablecoin yield labelled zero-risk is a marketing claim; the pool still carries smart-contract and trading-counterparty risk
  • No fee schedule, team details or audit firm names appear
  • No native token is listed on DefiLlama, and the similarly named ELYFI token belongs to a different project

ELFi Protocol fees

ELFi's trading fees, funding rates, pool fee split and withdrawal costs are not stated publicly. Users would find them in the trading interface and the protocol documentation before opening a position.

The project promotes yield figures, including a 500% APR post on its social account. Treat promotional rates as variable and temporary, and check how yield is generated, since pool returns depend on trader profit and loss and on incentives. Gas costs on Base and Arbitrum are paid separately.

Is ELFi Protocol safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits for ELFi, but the project does not name the auditors, the dates or the findings. Check the reports in the documentation. The protocol is non-custodial in the usual sense for a DEX, so users keep their keys, but deposited funds sit in smart contracts that can have bugs or oracle problems.

Derivatives add further risk. With leverage advertised up to 1000x, small price moves can liquidate a position. Liquidity providers act as the counterparty to traders and can lose money when traders win. The homepage describes stablecoin products as zero-risk, which should be read as marketing and not a guarantee.

Public sources include no regulatory information and no incident history. TVL is small and the official link points to a testnet, so the project may be at an early stage. Check whether derivatives trading is allowed where you live, and only risk money you can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with ELFi Protocol

  1. 1

Read the protocol documentation, especially the sections on the ELP pool, margin modes and liquidation rules.

  2. 2

Confirm which version of the app you are using. The official link is a testnet address, so check what is live on mainnet before moving real funds.

  3. 3

Use the faucet or testnet environment, if offered, to practice with no financial risk.

  4. 4

Connect a self-custody wallet and select Base or Arbitrum.

  5. 5

Start with a small deposit and low leverage, and learn how isolated and cross margin behave.

  6. 6

Review the audit reports and monitor open positions, because high leverage can lead to quick liquidation.

Who ELFi Protocol is for

ELFi is aimed at experienced DeFi users who trade perpetual-style derivatives and want margin handled across a whole portfolio. It may also interest liquidity providers looking at pool yield who understand that returns depend on trader results. It is a poor fit for beginners or anyone uncomfortable with liquidation risk.

ELFi Protocol FAQs

What is ELFi Protocol?

ELFi Protocol is a decentralized derivatives exchange listed on DefiLlama under Derivatives. It offers leveraged trading backed by a pooled liquidity design called ELP, plus yield products for stablecoins and non-stablecoin assets.

Which blockchains does ELFi run on?

DefiLlama lists Base and Arbitrum. Its homepage does not name other networks, so check the app for the current list of supported chains.

What is portfolio margin on ELFi?

Portfolio margining measures risk across all positions in one account instead of position by position. Offsetting positions can then need less collateral, which raises capital efficiency but can also link the risk of different positions together.

Does ELFi Protocol have a token?

DefiLlama shows no token for ELFi Protocol. Public reporting for ELFI mostly show ELYFI, a different project built around tokenized real-world assets, so do not treat the two as the same.

Is ELFi's stablecoin yield really zero-risk?

The project does not support calling it risk-free. The homepage uses the phrase zero-risk for USDT and USDC products, but any on-chain pool carries smart-contract risk, and a pool that takes the other side of traders can lose money. Read the documentation on how the pool works before depositing.

Has ELFi been audited?

DefiLlama lists two audits, but the project does not name the auditors or give their scope. Audits reduce risk and do not remove it, so read the reports before depositing funds.
