What Is Xelis?

Xelis is a Layer 1 blockchain project focused on privacy. Its native cryptocurrency is XEL, and the network combines Proof of Work (PoW), a BlockDAG design and smart contracts. The project says it was built from scratch in Rust, with its own smart contract engine, the Xelis Virtual Machine (XVM). Developers can write contracts in Silex, a Rust-like scripting language.

Xelis aims to support confidential transactions and assets. Its use of homomorphic encryption is intended to let some operations work on encrypted information without first revealing it. That is different from treating every balance and transaction amount as openly visible, though the exact privacy properties depend on the network’s implementation and how users interact with it. Xelis is a separate blockchain, not simply a token issued on a general-purpose network such as Ethereum.

How the Xelis Network Works

Xelis uses a Proof-of-Work BlockDAG rather than describing its structure as a conventional single-chain ledger. In a BlockDAG, blocks can be connected through a directed acyclic graph, which is a different way to organize and reconcile network activity. The project describes its blocks as having a five-second interval. That figure describes a design feature; it does not by itself guarantee that every transaction will be confirmed or settled in five seconds.

Proof of Work relies on miners contributing computing power to help secure the network and process blocks. Xelis also includes XVM for smart contracts, so its intended scope extends beyond transfers between wallets. Contracts and confidential assets can add flexibility, but they also create more software that must be implemented and maintained securely. The practical performance, privacy guarantees and security of these features depend on the network’s code, participation and continued development.

What Is XEL Used For?

XEL is the cryptocurrency associated with the Xelis network. It is reasonable to understand it as the network’s asset, but the public project description does not spell out every token mechanic, such as a complete fee schedule or detailed rules for miner rewards. Check the current protocol documentation before relying on assumptions about how XEL is used for a particular transaction or contract.

The network is designed to support smart contracts and confidential assets, but that does not mean every dApp or asset created on it has the same privacy characteristics. Privacy can depend on the contract, wallet and user choices as well as the protocol. Nor does a feature’s presence establish that the network has broad adoption or a large ecosystem. If you are considering using XEL, first confirm that the wallet or service supports the Xelis network itself and understand what information may still be visible.

XEL Supply and Market Context

As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating supply was about 6.28 million XEL, with total supply also about 6.28 million. The stated maximum supply is 18.4 million XEL. These figures are different measures: circulating supply estimates what is currently in circulation, while the maximum is the stated upper limit. Supply figures can change as coins are issued or records are updated.

At that date, XEL’s reported price was about $0.27 and its market capitalization was about $1.7 million. These are time-sensitive estimates, not stable values, and a small market capitalization or trading volume can make it harder to buy or sell without affecting the price. XEL is native to its own Layer 1 network; do not assume that a similarly named token on another chain is an official XEL representation. Verify the network and asset details before transferring funds.

Risks and How to Store XEL

XEL carries the risks common to small, volatile crypto assets, including sharp price changes, limited liquidity, software defects and uncertainty about adoption. A Proof-of-Work network also depends on miners and the distribution of mining power. Smart contracts can contain vulnerabilities, and encryption does not remove risks from compromised devices, mistakes or information shared outside the chain. Privacy-focused technology may also face changing legal or regulatory treatment in some places.

For storage, use a wallet that explicitly supports the Xelis network and obtain it through a source you have independently verified. Check the receiving network and address before sending XEL; transfers to an incompatible address or chain may not be recoverable. Keep recovery words offline and private, and never share them with someone claiming to provide support. A custodial exchange may hold the keys on your behalf, which introduces platform and access risks. Self-custody gives you control of the keys but makes you responsible for protecting them.

By the numbers

Xelis in numbers

Xelis (XEL) is ranked #2,590 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.61M and a price of $0.2562 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($1.61M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 13.9% over 7 days, down 42.1% over 30 days, down 70.4% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $37.11, set on May 28, 2024.

About 6.29M XEL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 18.4M (34% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $16.1K, or 1.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

XEL FAQs

What is XEL used for?

XEL is the cryptocurrency associated with the Xelis Layer 1 network. The project also describes smart contracts, confidential assets and a native contract engine, XVM.

How does the Xelis blockchain work?

Xelis describes itself as a Proof-of-Work blockchain with a BlockDAG structure and privacy features based on homomorphic encryption. Its smart contract engine is called the Xelis Virtual Machine.

What is the maximum supply of XEL?

The stated maximum supply is 18.4 million XEL. As of 2026-11-05, reported circulating supply was about 6.28 million XEL; supply figures can change.

How can I store XEL?

Xelis is a separate Layer 1 network, so confirm that a wallet supports Xelis itself before transferring XEL. Keep recovery words offline and never share them.

What are the risks of XEL?

XEL can be exposed to volatility, limited liquidity, software and smart contract bugs, mining concentration and changing rules for privacy-focused assets. Privacy features do not prevent every form of data exposure or loss.

What is the market cap of Xelis?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Xelis had a market cap of about $1.61M, ranking #2,590 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of XEL?

Xelis's all-time high is $37.11, reached on May 28, 2024. Its all-time low is $0.1194 (Aug 16, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of XEL?
