Ren (REN): What It Is, Uses and Risks

Ren is an open protocol designed to move value between blockchains. Its main product, RenVM, focused on cross-chain interoperability for decentralized finance (DeFi). It brought assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Zcash (ZEC) to other networks as wrapped tokens—for example, renBTC on Ethereum. A wrapped token is a blockchain-based representation of an asset from another network; it is not the original asset itself.

REN is the project’s token. Ren was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in Singapore. The project description identifies RenVM’s purpose, but does not establish which services are currently operating or what users can do with them today. Before relying on a bridge or wrapped asset, check its current availability, redemption process and security information.

RenVM was designed to let users move value across otherwise separate blockchains and use wrapped assets in DeFi applications. For instance, renBTC represented Bitcoin on Ethereum, where it could interact with Ethereum-based applications. Moving an asset this way involves more than transferring a token: users depend on the bridge’s operation, the wrapped token’s contracts and a process for redeeming the representation for the original asset.

REN is described as the token that powers Ren’s open protocol. Public descriptions have also associated REN with network operations, but public sources do not confirm its precise current uses, requirements or whether RenVM services remain available. Do not assume REN is required for every transfer, or that a wrapped asset can currently be minted or redeemed. Confirm the protocol’s present status and the specific asset’s redemption terms before acting.

REN has a stated maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The reported circulating and total supplies are also 1 billion, so the figures show no additional supply beyond that cap. REN is issued on Ethereum, Near and Harmony; it is not listed as the native token of any chain. Network availability and token representations can differ, so check the exact network and token contract before sending REN.
