What an NFT collection is

An NFT collection is a set of tokens that belong together, usually created by one smart contract and sold under a shared name. Each token has a unique ID and often its own traits, image or attached item. The collection is the unit most buyers think in: people say they own a piece of a collection rather than an isolated token.

Most collections follow one of a few token standards. ERC-721 treats every token as one of a kind, while ERC-1155 lets a single contract hold both unique and multiple identical items, which suits game assets. Sudoswap V2 supports ERC-1155 for this reason, while Sudoswap V1 handles ERC721 only.

A collection is not the same as a marketplace. The collection is the asset; the marketplace is where it is listed, bid on and traded. Some projects run both. NBA Top Shot, for example, is a licensed basketball highlight collection and its own trading venue on Flow, and Telegram Gifts are in-app collectibles that can become TON-based NFTs.

Owning an NFT usually means owning a token that points to content, not the copyright to that content. What rights come with it depends on the project's terms, so read them before you buy.

Main types of NFT collections

Collections fall into a handful of broad groups, though many blur the lines.

Profile pictures (PFP). Avatar sets with randomly generated traits. Rarity of traits drives price differences inside the collection. Punks Terminal is built around CryptoPunks, one of the best-known PFP sets, and lets users place bids filtered by trait.

Art. One-off or limited works from named artists. SuperRare is a curated Ethereum venue for digital art, including works paired with physical pieces. Objkt on Tezos is another place where artists mint and collectors trade.

Gaming. Characters, land and items used inside games. ImmutableX, Ronin Market and TokenTrove serve game assets on their respective chains, and AtomicHub covers gaming items on WAX and EOS-family chains.

Domains and names. Doma fractionalizes web3 domains into tradable tokens, and Fragment auctions Telegram usernames and numbers.

Membership and access. Tokens that act as a pass to a community, event or service. Their value depends entirely on what the holder actually gets.

Real-world assets (RWA). Tokens tied to physical goods. Courtyard and Phygitals deal in vaulted graded trading cards, which holders can trade or, in some cases, redeem. These add custody and authenticity questions that purely digital items do not have.

How to evaluate a collection

No single number tells you whether a collection is sound. Use several checks together.

Floor price. The lowest current listing. It shows the cost of entry but says little about how easy it is to sell. Look at how the floor has moved over weeks, not hours.

Liquidity. Check how often items sell, how many are listed, and how big the gap is between the floor and the next few listings. A collection with few sales can be hard to exit even at a low price. Pool-based protocols such as NFTX, Sudoswap and Caviar V1 can quote instant prices, but those prices depend on what is in the pool.

Holder distribution. Many distinct holders is generally healthier than a few wallets owning a large share. A concentrated supply means a few sellers can move the market.

Royalties and fees. Look at creator royalties and marketplace fees together, since both reduce what you receive when you sell.

Team and roadmap. Is the team public or verifiable? Are past promises delivered? Treat vague roadmaps and anonymous teams with extra caution, and read the project's terms on what ownership actually grants.

If volume looks high but wallets are few, consider whether the same parties are trading with each other.

Where collections trade

Marketplaces differ in chain, fee model and who they suit.

General and multi-chain. OpenSea is the best-known peer-to-peer venue, covering Ethereum, Polygon and Kaia. Rarible and Element Market span several chains, and OKX NFT Marketplace aggregates listings inside OKX Wallet.

Pool-based traders. NFTX, Sudoswap V1 and V2, and Caviar V1 use automated market maker designs instead of one-to-one order matching. NFTX turns collections into vault-backed ERC20 tokens, while Sudoswap uses bonding curves to set prices. These can offer fast swaps but carry pool and pricing risk.

Chain-specific. Objkt on Tezos, Stargaze on Cosmos, SentX on Hedera, Ebisu's Bay on Cronos, and Getgems on TON each serve their own ecosystem. NFT Hive, NeftyBlocks and AtomicHub operate on WAX, with AtomicHub also on EOS. NeftyBlocks activity appears very small at the time of writing.

Specialist. SuperRare for curated art, Doki Doki for random gachapon-style purchases, and Courtyard and Phygitals for physical collectibles in digital packs.

Pick a venue that actually lists the collection you want, check its fee structure, and confirm you are on the official site before connecting a wallet.

Strategy and vault products built on NFTs

Some projects go beyond listing and trading, using NFTs as part of a strategy or vault.

TokenWorks runs NFTStrategy on Ethereum, where tokens use trading fees to buy, relist and burn NFTs. It is aimed at experienced, risk-tolerant users, and the TokenWorks score of 5.5 on this site reflects that profile. Rip.xyz, a small Hyperliquid project, offers the Hypurr Vault and Hypurr Market, with vault shares represented by NFTs or the rHYPURR token. Its total value locked was only about $70,000 at the time of writing, so treat it as an early, small-scale product.

The common thread is that your outcome depends on a protocol's design and on trading activity, not just on the NFT's artwork or rarity. Questions to ask include how fees are generated, what happens if trading volume falls, who can change the contract, and whether it has been audited.

Total value locked figures on this page change daily, so use them only as a rough sign of scale. A small figure usually means thinner liquidity and fewer people watching the code. None of this is financial advice, and strategy products can lose value quickly.

Risks and scams

NFTs are a speculative asset class, and a large share of collections have little or no trading. Prices can fall fast, and there may be no buyer when you want to sell.

Common scams.

  • Fake mint pages and cloned marketplace sites that ask you to connect a wallet.
  • Malicious approval requests that let a contract move your tokens or funds.
  • Direct messages offering free mints, giveaways or support help.
  • Impersonated collections that copy the name and art of a real one.
  • Wash trading, where the same parties trade to fake volume.

Practical habits.

  • Reach marketplaces through addresses you have saved yourself, not links sent to you.
  • Read every signature request. Refuse anything you do not understand.
  • Use a separate wallet for minting and new sites, and keep valuable items in a wallet that rarely connects to anything.
  • Review and revoke old token approvals from time to time.
  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone.

Gambling-like features. Random packs and gachapon draws, such as those on Doki Doki, Courtyard and Phygitals, work like chance-based purchases. You must be 18+ (21+ where required), and you should check that such products are legal where you live. Do not try to get around age checks, KYC or location limits.

Only spend what you can afford to lose.

How to read the scores and data on this page

The scores on this page are DappsAtlas ratings, and they sit alongside figures such as total value locked where the data exists. Treat them as a starting point for your own research, not a recommendation.

At the time of writing, OpenSea (7.6), SentX (7.4) and OKX NFT Marketplace (7.4) lead the list, followed by SuperRare (7.3). Several others score around 7. Lower scores, such as Caviar V1 at 5.4 and Ebisu's Bay and Doma at 5.5, tend to reflect smaller or narrower products. Rip.xyz and NeftyBlocks have no score because of limited data and very small activity.

TVL only applies to protocols that hold assets, so many marketplaces show none. A missing figure does not mean a problem, and a large one does not mean safety. NFTX showed about $2.0 million and Punks Terminal about $1.8 million at the time of writing, but these numbers move daily.

Before using any dApp, check which chain it runs on, whether the contracts are audited, what fees apply, and whether the collection you want is actually supported. Marketplace and collection rules can change, so confirm current terms on the project's official channels.

Frequently asked questions

What is an NFT collection?

An NFT collection is a group of related tokens, usually minted from one smart contract, that share a theme, artist or project. Each token has its own ID and can carry different traits or artwork. Collections are what marketplaces list and rank, so the collection page is where most buyers start.

What does floor price mean?

The floor price is the lowest asking price currently listed for any item in a collection. It is a rough guide to entry cost, not a measure of value. A thin market can show a floor that moves sharply after one sale or one delisting.

How can I tell if a collection is liquid?

Look at how many distinct wallets hold items, how many listings sit near the floor, and how often sales happen. Wide gaps between the floor and the next listing often signal a thin market. Pool-based venues such as NFTX and Sudoswap can offer instant exits for some collections, but only up to the pool's size and pricing.

Do NFT creators still get royalties?

Not always. Some collections enforce creator royalties, others make them optional, and some marketplaces handle them differently. Sudoswap V2 advertises on-chain royalties. Check the fee breakdown before you confirm any trade.

What are the most common NFT scams?

Common warning signs include fake mint sites, wallet-draining approval requests, impersonator accounts, and wash-traded volume. Never sign a request you do not understand, and avoid approving unlimited access to your wallet. Keep valuable items in a separate wallet from the one you use to connect to new sites.

Are NFTs a good investment?

Some are, but treat any NFT as a speculative asset that can lose most or all of its value. Prices depend on demand, and many collections have little trading. Never put in money you cannot afford to lose. Features like random packs and gachapon draws can work like gambling. You must be 18+ (21+ in some places) and should check that such activity is legal where you live.
