ActiveTerra Luna Review 2026: The UST Collapse and What Remains
Terra was a proof-of-stake blockchain built around the UST algorithmic stablecoin until UST lost its peg in May 2022 and LUNA collapsed. A relaunched Terra 2.0 chain and LUNA token continue, but the project carries heavy historical and regulatory baggage.

Our verdict on Terra Luna
3.0/10Terra is mainly a case study today. It showed how fast an algorithmic stablecoin can fail, and it still carries legal and reputational risk from the SEC action. It may suit experienced, risk-tolerant users who want exposure to Terra 2.0 or Terra Classic and understand the difference. Its main strength is a clear, documented history and a still-trading token. The main caveat is trust: LUNA fell over 99% in 2022, the ecosystem has not recovered, and current fees, audits and team details are not clearly published.

What is Terra Luna?
Terra is a blockchain network created in 2018, according to one explainer, by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin. It aimed to provide fast, stable digital money for payments and decentralised finance. Its main product was TerraUSD (UST), an algorithmic stablecoin pegged to the US dollar.
By early 2022, UST had become the fifth-largest stablecoin, with a market cap of $18.4 billion. In May 2022 it lost its peg, and LUNA fell more than 99%. One source describes it as one of the biggest crashes in crypto history, with investors losing billions.
A new chain, Terra 2.0, followed, and the old chain continues as Terra Classic. One market tracker reports a Terra 2.0 LUNA supply of about 1.19 billion tokens, with around 710 million in circulation, trading on 228 markets. That scale is far smaller than the pre-collapse ecosystem.
The project's homepage could not be reviewed here, so details about current development, audits and team are not confirmed.
How Terra Luna works
Terra's original design was a proof-of-stake blockchain with LUNA as the staking and governance token. Users staked LUNA to secure the network, and validators who verified transactions were rewarded in LUNA.
Its stablecoins did not hold reserves like Tether or USDC. Instead, an algorithm tied each stablecoin to its target by minting or burning LUNA. If UST traded below $1, users could swap it for $1 worth of LUNA, which removed UST from circulation. If it traded above $1, the reverse applied.
This works only while confidence in LUNA holds. When UST lost its peg in May 2022, more UST was redeemed for LUNA, which pushed LUNA's price down further. The algorithm could not adjust fast enough, and both tokens collapsed. A new Terra 2.0 chain with a new LUNA token was launched afterwards.
5 features
Key features
01
Proof-of-stake chain
The network used proof-of-stake consensus, where users stake LUNA to secure the chain and validators are rewarded in LUNA.
02
Algorithmic stablecoins
The original design supported stablecoins such as UST (USD), TerraKRW (Korean won) and TerraSDR (IMF special drawing rights), kept in line by minting and burning LUNA.
03
Terra Classic chain
The old chain operates as Terra Classic, described by an exchange as an algorithmic stablecoin platform on a Tendermint-based PoS chain.
04
Terra 2.0 relaunch
A relaunched chain and LUNA token started in 2022. One explainer says dApps will prioritise LUNA 2.0 while the old token coexists.
05
Payments focus
Terra's stablecoins powered payment apps such as Chai, which one source says had over 2.3 million users and processed nearly $1 billion.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Clear, well-documented history that lets readers understand the failure mode of algorithmic stablecoins.
- Proof-of-stake design lets holders stake LUNA to help secure the network.
- LUNA is still tradable, with a Terra 2.0 token listed on over 200 markets according to one tracker.
- The original ecosystem showed real payment use, with the Chai app reportedly reaching over 2.3 million users.
- Terra 2.0 offers a fresh chain separate from the collapsed system.
Watch out for
- The original Terra system collapsed in May 2022, and LUNA lost more than 99% of its value.
- The SEC filed fraud charges against Terraform Labs and co-founder Do Kwon over UST, LUNA, wLUNA and MIR.
- Algorithmic stablecoin designs such as UST depend on market confidence, which can vanish quickly.
- Terra 2.0 has not regained its former market position, and trading volume is small next to its past scale.
- Fees, audits, team details and roadmap are not clearly published.
- Two chains share the Terra name, Terra Classic and Terra 2.0, which confuses newcomers and risks buying the wrong token.
Terra Luna fees
Fee schedules for the Terra chains are not set out in the material available here. Users would see network transaction fees in their wallet when sending or staking, and trading fees on whichever exchange they use to buy LUNA.
The original stablecoin design also had an implicit cost: swaps between UST and LUNA were the mechanism that kept the peg, and that mechanism failed under stress in 2022.
Is Terra Luna safe?
Terra's main safety lesson is counterparty and design risk. The UST peg relied on an algorithm and market confidence rather than reserves, and it failed in May 2022. The SEC has filed charges against Terraform Labs PTE Ltd. and Do Hyeong Kwon alleging fraud through the unregistered sale of crypto asset securities including UST, LUNA, wLUNA and MIR. These are allegations from an enforcement action, not a verdict stated here.
Audit reports, custody arrangements and current governance for Terra 2.0 are not published in the material available. Anyone holding LUNA should expect high volatility, use a self-custody wallet where possible, and treat the asset as speculative.
6 steps
How to get started with Terra Luna
- 1
Decide which asset you mean: Terra 2.0 LUNA or the Terra Classic token, which trades as LUNC. They are different assets.
- 2
Read about the May 2022 UST collapse and the SEC action against Terraform Labs before committing any funds.
- 3
Check the official Terra website for current wallet, staking and ecosystem information.
- 4
If you buy, use a reputable exchange that lists the exact token and confirm the ticker and market before placing an order.
- 5
Move holdings to a wallet you control, and only stake with validators you have researched.
- 6
Keep position sizes small, since the asset is highly volatile and speculative.
Who Terra Luna is for
Terra suits experienced, risk-tolerant crypto users who understand the 2022 collapse and want speculative exposure to LUNA or want to study algorithmic stablecoin design. It is a poor fit for newcomers, people seeking stable value, or anyone who cannot afford a total loss.
Terra Luna FAQs
What is Terra Luna?
Terra is a proof-of-stake blockchain created in 2018, according to one explainer, and built around algorithmic stablecoins. Its native token is LUNA. After the 2022 collapse, a new chain called Terra 2.0 was launched alongside the old chain, now known as Terra Classic.
What happened to Terra and UST?
UST lost its peg to the US dollar in May 2022. Its algorithm, which minted and burned LUNA to defend the $1 price, could not adjust fast enough. UST fell below $0.30 and LUNA dropped more than 99%, wiping out billions in investor value.
What is the difference between Terra 2.0 and Terra Classic?
Terra 2.0 is a new chain launched in 2022 after the collapse, with a new LUNA token. Terra Classic is the original chain, where the old token now trades under the LUNC ticker. Both are separate assets.
Is Terra LUNA still trading?
Yes, in a limited way. One market tracker lists the Terra 2.0 LUNA token on a couple of hundred markets with modest daily volume, and the Terra Classic token trades on major exchanges. Trading volume is far below its former peak, and the ecosystem has not recovered its previous standing.
Are there legal issues around Terra?
The SEC filed charges against Terraform Labs PTE Ltd. and Do Hyeong Kwon, alleging a multi-billion-dollar fraud through the unregistered offer and sale of crypto asset securities, including UST, LUNA, wLUNA and MIR. These are allegations in an enforcement action, and readers should check the current status of the case.
Is LUNA a safe investment?
LUNA is a high-risk, speculative asset given the collapse history and regulatory action. Only consider money you can afford to lose, confirm which LUNA token you are buying, and do your own research on the current state of the chain.
