Story Review 2026: From On-Chain IP to AI Training Data

Story launched as an EVM-compatible Layer 1 for registering and licensing intellectual property on-chain, then rebranded in 2026 to the DATA Foundation with a focus on AI training data. The token moved 1:1 from IP to DATA, but the new direction is young and unproven.

Our verdict on Story

6.0/10

Story suits readers who follow infrastructure projects at the crossover of blockchain and AI data and who accept a young, shifting roadmap. Its strength is a live EVM Layer 1 with well-known backers and a clean 1:1 token migration. The main caveat is that the pivot to AI training data is new, the original token fell sharply from its peak, and audits, fees and team details are not published in what was reviewed. Treat it as a high-risk, early-stage bet and verify details with official documentation.

What is Story?

Story is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that went live on February 13, 2025, with a mainnet called Homer. It was designed to bring intellectual property on-chain, so creators could register works and set enforceable license terms. Its developer, PIP Labs, was reported to be led by founder SY Lee and backed by a16z Crypto and Polychain Capital.

In June 2026 the project announced a rebrand. Story Protocol became the DATA Foundation, and its focus moved from IP licensing to infrastructure for AI training data. The IP token was retired and converted 1:1 into a token with the ticker DATA, with trading resuming on major exchanges in October 2026.

The new direction centres on data registry and processing tools, plus a reported integration with the Kled marketplace. The project's homepage could not be reviewed, so the product descriptions here come from third-party coverage. Licence, audit and team details are not published in that material.

How Story works

Story is a Layer 1 blockchain, meaning it has its own validators and ledger rather than running on top of another chain. It is EVM-compatible, so developers can write smart contracts in the same style used on Ethereum. The native token pays transaction fees, and the network's mainnet launched in February 2025.

In its original form, creators registered intellectual property on-chain and attached programmable licenses. The design had three layers: an application ecosystem, programmable IP licenses, and a proof-of-creativity protocol that records who registered what. Because licenses were code, software could check terms and handle payments automatically.

The 2026 rebrand redirects this toward AI training data. Reports describe Trace, a registry and audit platform for data, and Poseidon, a processing system, along with a link to the Kled data marketplace. The idea is to record data provenance on-chain so buyers of training data can see where it came from. How well this works in practice is not yet shown by public usage figures.

7 features

Key features

01

EVM-compatible Layer 1

Story is an EVM-compatible Layer 1, so Ethereum-style wallets and smart contracts can work with it. Its mainnet, Homer, uses chain ID 1514.

02

Programmable IP licensing

The original design had three layers: an application ecosystem, programmable IP licenses and a proof-of-creativity protocol for registering IP.

03

On-chain IP registry

Creators could register IP on-chain and attach license terms that software can enforce. This was the project's original pitch.

04

Trace data registry

Reported as a public on-chain registry and audit platform, part of the 2026 move toward AI training data.

05

Poseidon data processing

Reported as a data processing system that supports the project's AI training data direction.

06

Kled marketplace integration

A reported integration brings assets tied to Kled, a data marketplace, on-chain, covering more than 1.5 billion user-contributed records.

07

1:1 token migration

IP holders received DATA at a 1:1 ratio, automatically, with no bonus multipliers or haircuts. The 1 billion supply cap is reported as unchanged.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Live EVM-compatible Layer 1 mainnet since February 2025, so standard wallets and smart-contract tooling apply
  • Backed by well-known investors, with a16z Crypto named in multiple reports
  • Token migration was automatic and 1:1, with no action needed from holders
  • Supply cap of 1 billion reported as unchanged by the migration
  • Clear new focus on data provenance for AI training, with named tools and a marketplace link

Watch out for

  • Pivot from IP licensing to AI training data is recent, so the new products have little track record
  • Original IP token reportedly fell nearly 98% from its peak of about 14.78 dollars
  • Funding figures differ between sources, and the project's own figures could not be checked
  • Audit reports, team details and fee schedules are not published in the material reviewed
  • Trace, Poseidon and the Kled integration are described only by third parties, and usage numbers are not given
  • Ticker and branding changed within months, which can confuse holders and users of older guides

Story fees

Fee levels are not published in the material reviewed. As with most EVM chains, users pay network transaction fees in the native token, and the current amounts would show in a wallet before signing or on a block explorer.

The 1:1 migration from IP to DATA is reported to have carried no haircut. Any exchange trading fees depend on the venue where DATA is bought or sold.

Is Story safe?

Audit reports, bug bounty details and custody arrangements are not published in the material reviewed, so this review cannot rate smart-contract security. As a Layer 1, the network's security depends on its validator set and client software, and the project does not detail these here. Check official documentation for audit information before committing funds.

The token carries market risk. The original IP token was reported to have fallen nearly 98% from its peak of about 14.78 dollars. The 1:1 swap changes nothing about holders' economic position, and future prices depend on demand. Regulatory treatment of the token and of AI data licensing is not stated.

6 steps

How to get started with Story

  1. 1

Read the DATA Foundation's own documentation to confirm the current product scope and the token ticker.

  2. 2

Check whether any IP tokens you hold have been migrated to DATA. The swap is reported as automatic on major exchanges.

  3. 3

If you want to use the chain directly, add Story mainnet (chain ID 1514) to an EVM wallet using details from official documentation.

  4. 4

Look up your address on a Story block explorer to confirm balances and transactions.

  5. 5

Buy or sell DATA only on venues you trust and understand, checking that the exchange has completed its migration.

  6. 6

Start with a small amount and verify any new registry or data tool before relying on it.

Who Story is for

Story is for crypto-curious readers, developers and investors who want exposure to on-chain data provenance or AI training data infrastructure. It is less suited to anyone who wants a stable, established product, since the project has just changed its core focus and token ticker.

Story FAQs

What is Story?

Story is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that launched its mainnet, called Homer with chain ID 1514, on February 13, 2025. It was built to bring intellectual property on-chain, letting creators register IP and attach licenses. In 2026 the project began shifting toward AI training data infrastructure.

What happened to the IP token?

Reports say the IP token completed a 1:1 migration to a token with the ticker DATA, and trading resumed on major exchanges in October 2026. Holders did not have to act, as the swap was automatic. The supply cap of 1 billion is reported as unchanged.

Is Story Protocol now the DATA Foundation?

One report says the rebrand was announced on June 25, 2026, when Story Protocol became the DATA Foundation. Its focus moved from licensing intellectual property to infrastructure for AI training data. The Layer 1 chain and its earlier IP registration tools are not described as shut down.

Who backs Story?

Reported funding differs by source. One source cites an 80 million dollar Series B led by a16z Crypto, with total fundraising of about 140 million dollars before the rebrand. Another puts the total at roughly 134 million dollars, with Andreessen Horowitz among the backers. The project's own figures are not available here.

What are Trace and Poseidon?

The reported new tools are Trace, a public on-chain registry and audit platform, and Poseidon, a data processing system. A reported integration with the Kled data marketplace brings assets tied to more than 1.5 billion user-contributed records on-chain. These descriptions come from a single news report.

Is Story safe to use?

The project does not give an audit history, so the safest assumption is that risks are the usual ones for a young Layer 1 and its token. The token has already seen a large drawdown from its peak, and the project is changing direction. Read the project's own documentation and audit disclosures before committing funds, and never put in more than you can lose.
