Our verdict on Carmine Options
5.2/10Carmine Options suits experienced DeFi users who want to try on-chain options on Starknet and understand that options can lose the whole premium. Its strengths are the pool-based AMM design, two listed audits and an open SDK. The main caveat is size and momentum: TVL is only around $96,000, and the team's homepage now describes the AMM as past work and promotes other products. Verify current activity and contract details before depositing, and keep positions small.

What is Carmine Options?
Carmine Options is an automated market maker for options, built on Starknet. It aims to let anyone buy and sell options at a fair price, using pooled liquidity rather than a traditional order book. It has been tracked since June 2023 and has its own token, CARM.
The protocol was built by Carmine Finance, which now describes itself as a DeFi risk and tooling company. Its homepage lists Segmento for user analytics, DeRisk for lending-protocol risk, Konoha for Cairo governance contracts and custom DeFi work. The Options AMM appears there as past work, since the team says it built the frontend and backend.
Total value locked is around $96,000, up 2.7% over seven days. That is small for a derivatives protocol, so liquidity is thin and the venue suits cautious experimentation more than large positions.
How Carmine Options works
An options AMM replaces the order book with liquidity pools. Liquidity providers deposit assets into a pool, and the pool acts as the counterparty when traders buy or sell options. The protocol sets the option price with a formula, and the aim is a fair price for each strike and expiry.
When a trader buys an option, they pay a premium into the pool. If the option finishes in the money, the pool pays out, and if it expires worthless, the pool keeps the premium. Liquidity providers therefore earn premiums in quiet markets and can lose money when prices move sharply.
Carmine's contracts run on Starknet, and an SDK lets developers interact with them. The CARM token is part of the protocol's design, as described in the project's tokenomics article.
6 features
Key features
01
Options AMM design
Options are priced by a pool-based market maker, so users trade against liquidity rather than waiting for a counterparty.
02
Open access to options
The protocol describes its aim as letting anyone buy and sell options at a fair price.
03
Starknet deployment
The protocol runs on Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 network, using Cairo smart contracts.
04
Developer SDK
A TypeScript SDK on GitHub wraps the on-chain contracts and data APIs for developers building on the AMM.
05
CARM token
The protocol has its own token, CARM, and a published tokenomics article describing its design.
06
Listed audits
Two audits are listed for the protocol. The reports are not linked on the homepage.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Pool-based design lets users trade options on Starknet without needing an order book.
- Two audits are listed for the protocol.
- Open-source tooling, including a TypeScript SDK, helps developers integrate.
- Has been live since mid-2023 and has a documented tokenomics design for CARM.
- Part of a team with wider DeFi risk and smart-contract experience.
Watch out for
- TVL is only around $96,000, so liquidity is shallow and large trades may move prices.
- The team's homepage describes the options AMM in the past tense and now promotes other products, which raises questions about ongoing development.
- Only Starknet is supported, so users need a Starknet wallet and bridged funds.
- Fees, pool parameters and team details are not published on the homepage.
- Options are complex and can lose the full premium paid, and liquidity providers can lose money if options finish in the money.
Carmine Options fees
Carmine does not publish a fee schedule on its homepage. Options AMMs typically charge through the option premium and sometimes a protocol fee. Users should check the amount shown in the trading interface before confirming.
Starknet network fees apply to every transaction and are paid in the network's gas token. Liquidity providers earn premiums but bear the risk of losses on options the pool has sold.
Is Carmine Options safe?
Two audits are listed for the protocol, but the homepage does not publish the reports or name the auditors. The contracts are non-custodial, so users keep control of funds in their own wallets until they deposit or trade. The usual smart-contract risk still applies, as does the risk of Starknet's own infrastructure.
A small TVL gives little track record to judge, and the team's homepage describes the AMM as past work, so users should verify current maintenance themselves. Licensing and regulatory status are not published. Derivatives are restricted in some jurisdictions, so check local rules before trading.
6 steps
How to get started with Carmine Options
- 1
Confirm that trading derivatives is legal where you live and that you understand how options work.
- 2
Set up a Starknet-compatible wallet and fund it with assets bridged to Starknet.
- 3
Find the current Carmine Options app through the official project channels and check the contract addresses.
- 4
Review the tokenomics article and any audit information before depositing.
- 5
Start with a small position, check the premium and fees shown, then confirm the transaction.
- 6
Track expiry dates, since options can expire worthless.
Who Carmine Options is for
The protocol suits experienced DeFi users on Starknet who understand options and want an on-chain venue to buy or sell them. It also suits developers who want to build on the open SDK. It is a poor fit for beginners, for anyone who needs deep liquidity, and for users who want an actively marketed product.
Carmine Options FAQs
What is Carmine Options?
Carmine Options is an automated market maker for options on Starknet. It lets users buy and sell options against pooled liquidity at a price set by the protocol, instead of matching individual buyers and sellers.
Which blockchain does Carmine Options use?
The protocol runs on Starknet only, according to public information. Users need a Starknet-compatible wallet and funds on that network.
Does Carmine Options have a token?
Yes. The protocol's token is CARM, and a Medium article on the AMM's tokenomics describes how it is designed. The homepage does not spell out the token's current uses, so check the tokenomics article and the project's channels before relying on it.
Has Carmine Options been audited?
Two audits are listed for the protocol, but the homepage does not publish the reports or the auditors' names. An audit lowers the chance of contract bugs and does not remove it, and the protocol's small size means there is little track record to judge.
Is Carmine Options still being developed?
The homepage says the team built the frontend and backend for the Options AMM in the past. Its current focus appears to be tools such as Segmento, DeRisk and Konoha plus custom DeFi work. Check the project's social channels and the contracts themselves for current activity.
Is trading options on Carmine risky?
Yes. Options can expire worthless, so a buyer can lose the whole premium. Liquidity providers can also lose money if the options the pool sold finish in the money. Only use funds you can afford to lose, and check that derivatives trading is allowed where you live.
