Our verdict on BackedFi
6.5/10BackedFi suits qualified investors who want on-chain exposure to well-known US stocks and ETFs and who can meet its eligibility rules. Its main strength is a clear backing claim: each token is described as 1:1 backed by assets held with third-party custodians, with a public proof-of-reserves dashboard. The main caveat is access and counterparty risk. Non-US and most UK users are excluded, fees are not published in the material reviewed, and holders rely on custodians and the redemption process. Read the prospectus before deciding.

What is BackedFi?
BackedFi is the product name used for the xStocks platform run by Backed Finance, a company that brings stocks and ETFs onto blockchain rails. The homepage describes the product as composable tokenized securities that track the value of real-world assets such as stocks and ETFs, with a stated goal of enabling DeFi integrations.
The homepage highlights xStocks for names including SPY, COIN, NVDA and TSLA, and shows one-year cumulative NAV total returns for each as of December 11, 2025. Press coverage from 2025 reports a tokenized stocks launch on Solana that recorded more than $2 million in volume within hours. Another report describes Coinbase stock being brought on-chain through a partnership with Backed Finance. One news listing reports that Kraken acquired Backed Finance in December 2025 and integrated the xStocks platform, and the homepage also lists Kraken as an ecosystem partner.
The project's listing data shows it was added in August 2023. Its earlier products included crypto-backed ETF tokens on Base, which news coverage reported in October 2023. The current focus is xStocks, which the company promotes through the xStocks.fi site and a dashboard.
How BackedFi works
Backed Finance creates tokens that represent shares of stocks or ETFs. The company says each token is backed 1:1 by the underlying asset, which is held by third-party licensed custodians. The token's value is meant to follow the price of that asset, so a holder gets price exposure without buying the share directly through a brokerage.
The tokens can move on blockchains like ordinary crypto tokens. The company says they are freely transferable and can be used with DeFi protocols, for example as collateral or in liquidity pools. Whether a token can be bought or sold at a given moment depends on the trading venues and liquidity around it, which the company does not control.
Redemption is the link back to the underlying asset. The site says tokens are redeemable for the cash value of the asset. The homepage does not describe how that process works step by step, so the exact mechanics sit in the company's documentation and prospectus.

Pros and cons
What we like
- Each token is described as backed 1:1 by the underlying asset, which gives a clear backing claim to check.
- A public proof-of-reserves dashboard lets users look at the product data directly.
- Custody is described as held by third-party licensed custodians rather than in-house.
- Tokens are described as freely transferable and usable in DeFi, which is different from a closed brokerage account.
- The product covers well-known US stocks and ETFs, so the exposure is easy to understand.
- The stated regulatory basis includes the Swiss DLT Act and a prospectus filed with the Liechtenstein FMA.
Watch out for
- Access is restricted: the tokenized assets are offered only to qualified investors, not to US persons or UK clients as the site states.
- Holders depend on third-party custodians and the issuer's redemption process for the 1:1 backing to hold up.
- The fee schedule is not published in the material reviewed, which makes total cost hard to compare.
- Public listing data records no audits, and the site does not name a smart-contract auditor.
- Tokenized stocks can diverge from the underlying share price on trading venues, and the site notes past performance is not a guide to future returns.
BackedFi fees
BackedFi does not publish a fee schedule in the material reviewed. The homepage does not list issuance, redemption or management charges. Trading costs depend on the venue where a token is traded, and those venues publish their own fees.
Is BackedFi safe?
The site describes its tokens as 1:1 backed by the underlying assets, held by third-party licensed custodians, and redeemable for cash value. It also says the framework is based on the Swiss DLT Act and that a prospectus was filed with the Liechtenstein FMA. A prospectus filing is not an endorsement of the products, and the site says so itself.
The main risks are counterparty and custody risk. Holders rely on the custodians, the issuer and the redemption process, and smart-contract risk applies to any token on a chain. The public listing data records no audits for the protocol, and the material reviewed names no smart-contract auditor. No security incidents are described publicly reviewed.
Access is restricted by law. The site says the tokens are not offered to US persons and are offered to qualified investors, and that UK clients are excluded from most products. Investing involves a risk of loss, and past performance is not a guide to future results. Check the rules in your own jurisdiction before buying.

How to get started with BackedFi
- 1
Check whether you are a qualified investor in a jurisdiction the site allows, since it excludes US persons and most UK clients.
- 2
Read the prospectus filed with the Liechtenstein FMA and the documentation on the official site.
- 3
Confirm that buying tokenized securities is legal where you live before any transfer.
- 4
Open the proof-of-reserves dashboard to see how the product reports its backing.
- 5
Pick a supported trading venue or wallet, and check its fees and token contract address against the official site.
- 6
Start with a small position so you can see how the price tracks the underlying stock or ETF.
- 7
Keep records of your purchases, transfers and any redemption requests for tax reporting.
Who BackedFi is for
BackedFi is aimed at qualified investors, not the general public, who want exposure to listed stocks and ETFs through blockchain tokens. It may also suit DeFi users who want tokenized equities as collateral or for liquidity, provided they are legally allowed to hold them. It is less suitable for US persons, UK retail clients, or anyone who needs fee transparency before buying.
BackedFi FAQs
What is BackedFi?
Backed Finance is the company behind xStocks, a set of tokens meant to track the value of listed stocks and ETFs such as SPY, COIN, NVDA and TSLA. The site describes each token as backed 1:1 by the underlying asset, held by third-party licensed custodians.
Who can buy xStocks?
The site says the tokens are not offered directly to the public and are only available to qualified investors. The tokenized assets have not been registered under the US Securities Act of 1933, so they may not be offered to US persons. UK clients are not targeted, and some products are open only to UK professional clients after validation.
Can xStocks be redeemed for cash?
The company says each token can be redeemed for the cash value of the underlying asset. The homepage does not publish the redemption fees, minimums or processing times, so users should check the terms in the prospectus and documentation before relying on redemption.
Is it legal for me to buy tokenized stocks?
Gambling is not part of this product. Before buying any tokenized asset, check whether it is legal for you to invest in it where you live, and read the prospectus. Investing involves risk, including loss of capital.
