How to Send Legendary NBA Top Shot Moments to an External Wallet
Legendary NBA Top Shot Moments live on the Flow blockchain, so moving one to an outside wallet is a Flow transfer that cannot be reversed. This guide covers how to check eligibility, prepare the wallet, send the Moment and confirm it arrived.

What makes a legendary NBA Top Shot Moment different?
Legendary Moments are the rarest tier in NBA Top Shot. Published estimates put them at roughly a tenth of a percent of all Moments, and the exact share shifts as new sets are released, so treat any single figure as a snapshot. Legendary Moments usually feature highlight clips from famous games, which is why collectors value them.
Because the supply is small, a legendary Moment is worth more to collectors than common ones, and that is also why people want to move them out of the app. The question is practical: once a Moment is in your own wallet, you control the asset directly, but you also take on the job of protecting the wallet and the address you send to.
Before you start, decide why you are moving it. Common reasons include holding a Moment in a wallet you control, using it with another Flow app, or keeping a record outside the platform. If your goal is only to sell, check whether selling on the Top Shot marketplace is simpler, because each route has different steps and costs.
How does an NBA Top Shot wallet differ from an external Flow wallet?
NBA Top Shot runs on the Flow blockchain and was built by Dapper Labs. When you create an account, Top Shot sets up a Dapper wallet for you. That wallet is custodial in the sense that the platform manages access to it on your behalf, so your Moments are held in an account tied to your login rather than in a wallet whose keys only you hold.
A non-custodial wallet works differently. You hold the private keys or recovery phrase, and nobody else can move your assets. Moving a Moment from the Dapper wallet to a non-custodial Flow wallet changes who controls the asset, which is the main reason people do it.
Neither setup is automatically better. A custodial account is easier to manage, and it can help with account recovery. A non-custodial wallet gives you full control, but losing your recovery phrase or sending to the wrong address can mean permanent loss. Choose based on how comfortable you are with key management.
What should you check before sending a legendary Moment?
Work through this list before you touch any transfer button.
- Confirm that your Dapper account is fully set up, including any identity and location checks the platform requires.
- Check the official Top Shot support center for the current list of approved external wallets, and pick one that supports Flow.
- Make sure the Moment is not in an active sale, an open offer or another locked state. Cancel listings first.
- Set up the external wallet, write down the recovery phrase on paper, and store it offline.
- Copy the wallet's Flow address and check it character by character against the wallet app.
- Confirm you have enough of the network's native token to cover the small transaction fee, if your wallet asks for it.
- Note the Moment's serial number and name so you can find it again on the blockchain explorer.
Doing these checks first costs a few minutes and prevents most of the common problems people run into.
How do you send a legendary Moment to an external wallet step by step?
The exact menu labels can change with app updates, so use the current support documentation as your guide. The general sequence looks like this.
- Sign in to your Top Shot account and open your collection.
- Find the legendary Moment and open its detail page.
- Make sure it is not listed for sale or locked by an active feature.
- Choose the option to transfer or withdraw the Moment to an external wallet.
- Paste the external Flow address you prepared earlier.
- Review the summary, especially the address and Moment name, before you confirm.
- Approve the transaction and wait for the platform to show it as complete.
- Open your external wallet and check that the Moment appears.
If the transaction shows as pending for a long time, do not send it again straight away. Check the transaction status on a Flow blockchain explorer first, using the transaction ID the app gives you. Sending twice can cause confusion about which transfer went through.
What mistakes cause lost or stuck Moments?
Most problems come from a few repeated mistakes.
- Pasting the wrong address. A Flow address is a short hexadecimal string. A wallet on another chain, such as an Ethereum address, will not work for a Flow Moment, and funds sent to a wrong address can be unrecoverable.
- Sending from a listing. A Moment that is still listed can be sold while you are trying to move it, which causes errors or unexpected outcomes.
- Skipping the recovery phrase. If you lose it, you lose access to the wallet, and no support team can restore keys for a non-custodial wallet.
- Trusting a lookalike site. Scammers copy wallet names and login pages. Type the official addresses yourself or use bookmarks you created, and never enter a recovery phrase on a page that asked for it in a message.
- Rushing. Take a moment to read the confirmation screen.
If someone contacts you offering help with a transfer, treat it as a red flag. Real support staff will not ask for your recovery phrase or your password.
What happens to value and selling after you move a Moment?
A Moment being in a non-custodial wallet does not change its rarity or its value by itself, but it does change how you hold it. Market prices for legendary Moments move with demand, the player and the highlight, and they can change quickly. Do not rely on a price you read in an article. Check current sales data on the marketplace and on independent data sites before you decide.
If you plan to sell later, you will need to move the Moment back to a place where it can be listed, or use a marketplace that accepts assets from your wallet. Confirm that the destination supports the sale you want to make. Some external markets have their own fees, listing rules and payout methods.
Tax treatment of NFT sales depends on your country. Keep records of acquisition and transfer dates, transaction IDs and any amounts paid. A tax adviser who knows your local rules can tell you what applies to you.
How do you keep a non-custodial Flow wallet secure?
Holding a non-custodial wallet is a responsibility. Keep these habits in place.
- Store the recovery phrase offline, on paper or metal, in more than one secure location.
- Never share the recovery phrase, private keys or screenshots of them.
- Use a separate browser profile or device for crypto activity if you can.
- Turn on any device lock, and keep the wallet app and operating system updated.
- Bookmark official sites and check the domain before you sign in.
- Review each transaction request and reject anything you do not recognise.
- Avoid approving broad permissions you do not need.
If you think a wallet has been compromised, move any remaining assets to a new wallet you have set up from a fresh recovery phrase, and contact the official support channel for the platform involved. Act quickly, but do not click links from unknown messages.
What legal and safety limits should you keep in mind?
Legendary Moments are a form of digital collectible bought with money, and that can carry real financial risk. Pack opening and trading can be restricted or regulated in some places. Check the laws that apply to you before you buy, trade or move Moments, and only spend what you can afford to lose.
You must be 18 or older to use this kind of service, and Top Shot's terms and identity checks apply. Do not use a VPN or any other method to get around age checks, location restrictions or identity verification. If a service is not available where you live, that limit applies to you.
If gambling-style mechanics feel like they are taking over your spending, stop and talk to someone you trust. Many countries offer free help for problem gambling and compulsive spending.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Moment back if I send it to the wrong address?
Usually not in a way you can undo. A transfer to a Flow address is recorded on the blockchain, and no company can reverse it if you typed the wrong address. Before sending a valuable Moment, copy the address carefully and send a lower-value test Moment first if you have one.
Will every legendary Moment be withdrawable?
Many do not. Some Moments are locked in listings, challenges or other active features, and a Moment must be free before it can leave your account. Cancel any open listing and check the Moment's status in your collection before you start the transfer.
Can I use any Flow wallet?
Not all of them. Top Shot works with a set of approved external wallets, and the list can change. Check the official Top Shot support center for the current approved list, and confirm that the wallet you choose supports Flow and NFTs before you rely on it.
Do local laws affect trading Moments?
Read the rules for NFT ownership and collectibles where you live before you buy packs or trade. Rules differ by country and state, and some places restrict this kind of activity. You must be old enough under local law and under Top Shot's own terms. Nothing here is legal advice.
