What Ref Finance is
Ref Finance is a decentralized exchange built on the NEAR blockchain. It runs as an automated market maker (AMM), which means traders swap tokens against pools of funds supplied by other users instead of matching orders with a counterparty. People who deposit tokens into a pool are called liquidity providers, and they earn a share of the trading fees the pool generates.
The project describes itself as a gateway into the NEAR ecosystem. Besides swaps and liquidity pools, it has offered yield farming and the option to create new pools for tokens that do not yet have a market. It has also been linked to the Rainbow Bridge, a bridge that moves Ethereum-based assets to NEAR and back, which lets users reach NEAR's lower fees and faster confirmations.
REF is the project's own token. Data aggregators file it under Decentralized Finance and the NEAR Protocol ecosystem. They also list it in the portfolios of several well-known crypto investment firms, including Alameda Research, DragonFly Capital and OKX Ventures. That tagging says who is recorded as an investor, not that any of them are involved today.
What REF is used for
Public descriptions of REF point to three main uses: protocol governance, incentives for people who take part in the platform, and trading on exchanges. Governance means holders can have a say in how the protocol is run, such as which parameters or reward programs to adopt, although the exact voting mechanics are not covered in the data used for this page.
A later addition was xREF, a single-sided staking vault. Holders lock REF in the vault and receive a share of protocol revenue in return, without needing to pair REF with another token the way a normal liquidity pool requires. According to public descriptions, the protocol fee is directed toward buying back REF, funding staking rewards, and other program uses. The details of that split may have changed since those descriptions were written, so check the project's current documentation.
REF is not a gas token. Fees on NEAR are paid in NEAR, not REF. Outside these roles, no public source points to other uses, so treat REF mainly as a governance and revenue-sharing token for one DEX.
Supply and tokenomics
The total supply of REF is 100,000,000 tokens, and the data shows no separate maximum supply figure. About 95,995,182 tokens were in circulation as of 2026-11-05, which is roughly 96% of the total. That is a high share, so large scheduled unlocks are less likely to dilute holders than they would be for a token with most of its supply still locked. Even so, the breakdown between team, investors, community and treasury allocations is not given publicly here, so it is not described on this page.
As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.072, giving a market capitalization of around $6.9 million and a fully diluted valuation of around $7.2 million. Those are small numbers by crypto standards, and the token ranked near 1,489 by market cap. Reported 24-hour trading volume was only about $17, which indicates very thin trading.
The token's all-time high was about $10.64 on 2021-10-25, and its all-time low was about $0.030 on 2026-02-05. Over the last seven days the price fell by about 8%, and over a year by a similar amount. These are descriptions of past data, not forecasts.
Chains, holding and trading
REF is issued on the NEAR blockchain and is not the native token of any chain. On NEAR, tokens like REF follow a fungible token standard and sit in NEAR accounts, which can be named addresses such as a readable account name or a long hexadecimal one. Holding it requires a NEAR-compatible wallet, and receiving tokens may involve registering storage for the token on the account, a NEAR quirk that can surprise newcomers.
The main place to trade REF is Ref Finance itself, where it can be swapped against NEAR and other NEAR-based tokens. Some centralized exchanges have listed it in the past, but listings change, and the data used here does not confirm where it trades today. With very low recent volume, expect wide spreads and price impact even on small orders.
If you move assets across the Rainbow Bridge or another bridge to get onto NEAR, you are relying on bridge contracts as well as the DEX. Each extra step adds smart contract risk and the chance of an operator error, such as sending funds to the wrong address or network.
History and notable events
the public information available do not give an exact launch date for REF, but its all-time high of 2021-10-25 places the project's peak during the DeFi and NEAR ecosystem boom of that year. Public guides from May 2021 already describe how to swap, add liquidity and farm on the platform, so the DEX was active early in NEAR's DeFi development. The project was often called the main AMM of the NEAR ecosystem.
At the other end, the token's all-time low of about $0.030 was recorded on 2026-02-05, which shows how far the price has fallen from its peak. Market cap has also shrunk to a few million dollars.
One notable event is a security incident. A post-mortem about an exploit of Ref Finance has been published, which means the platform has had at least one security problem. Public sources used here do not include the amounts, the date or the outcome, so read the project's own account if you want details. The introduction of xREF staking is another milestone, as it tied REF holders more directly to protocol fee revenue.
Risks to understand
The first risk is liquidity. A reported 24-hour volume of about $17 means that buying or selling more than a trivial amount could move the price sharply, and you might not be able to exit at a quoted price. Small-cap tokens with little trading are also easier to manipulate.
Second is smart contract risk. AMMs depend on code holding user funds, and the existence of an exploit post-mortem shows this is not theoretical. Liquidity providers face impermanent loss as well: when the relative prices of pooled tokens change, the pool position can end up worth less than simply holding the tokens.
Third is ecosystem dependence. REF's value is tied to one DEX on one chain, and to how much trading and fee revenue that DEX attracts. If NEAR DeFi activity declines, so do fees and the appeal of staking REF. Bridge usage adds yet another layer of risk.
Finally, staking yields and governance rights can change, and published descriptions may be out of date. This page is educational and is not financial advice.
How to store REF safely
Because REF lives on NEAR, you need a wallet that supports NEAR accounts and NEAR fungible tokens. A hardware wallet paired with a NEAR-compatible wallet interface offers the strongest protection for any meaningful balance, since the signing keys stay on the device. A software wallet is more convenient for active DeFi use but exposes keys to malware and phishing.
Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to be support. Before connecting to any DEX or staking page, check that you are on the real site by using a bookmark you created earlier, as fake copies of DeFi sites are common.
If you stake in xREF or provide liquidity, remember that your tokens are held by smart contracts and not by your wallet alone. Review and revoke access permissions you no longer need, and consider keeping long-term holdings in a separate account from the one you use for daily DeFi activity. Test with a small transfer before moving a large amount.
By the numbers
Ref Finance in numbers
Ref Finance (REF) is ranked #1,516 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $6.52M and a price of $0.0680 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($6.80M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 9.6% over 7 days, down 32.4% over 30 days, down 14.2% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $10.64, set on Oct 25, 2021.
About 96M REF are in circulation, from a total supply of 100M. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $124, or 0.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
REF has token contracts on Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
