## What is Gridcoin (GRC)?
Gridcoin (GRC) is the native coin of the Gridcoin blockchain, a project that connects cryptocurrency rewards with distributed scientific computing. Participants can contribute spare computing resources to research projects through BOINC, a platform used by scientific and academic projects. Gridcoin’s Proof of Research model is intended to recognize eligible computing contributions, while the network also uses proof of stake. This makes GRC different from a token created on a general-purpose chain: it belongs to its own network. Gridcoin launched in 2014. Its focus is supporting distributed research computing, but taking part does not guarantee a reward or mean every BOINC project is eligible. GRC can also be held or transferred like other cryptocurrencies. The project’s aim is not a guarantee that its computing contributions will produce a particular scientific result.
## How Gridcoin’s Proof of Research works
Gridcoin uses a consensus approach described as Proof of Research. In broad terms, it links contributions of computing power to research projects with the operation of its blockchain. Participants use BOINC for computing work and Gridcoin software to connect that activity with the network. This is not the same as conventional proof-of-work mining, where computers compete to solve cryptographic puzzles primarily to secure a chain. Gridcoin also uses proof of stake, which involves holding and staking GRC to support network consensus. The precise requirements for earning or staking can depend on the protocol and software, so check current Gridcoin documentation before contributing. Running computing tasks uses electricity and can keep a computer busy for long periods. Consider device temperature, power use, and whether the work interferes with other tasks before enabling it.
## What is GRC used for?
GRC has several roles within the Gridcoin network. It can be transferred between compatible wallets, and users may stake it to participate in the network’s proof-of-stake process. The project also connects GRC rewards with eligible BOINC computing contributions, giving the coin a research-computing use beyond transfers. That does not mean GRC is a direct payment from a university or that every research project accepts it. Its usefulness depends on the Gridcoin network, participation, and whether other people or services are willing to accept or trade it. GRC is not a general-purpose payment coin by default, and a token balance alone does not provide access to scientific results. Before contributing computing resources, check the current project and software requirements, and understand that computing work may consume power and hardware resources even when rewards are small or unavailable.
## GRC supply and market context
Gridcoin has no maximum supply figure reported publicly available for this explainer. As of 2026-11-05, its circulating supply was about 506.1 million GRC and total supply about 543.3 million GRC. These are different measures: circulating supply estimates coins available in the market, while total supply includes coins not counted as circulating. They can change over time. On that date, GRC traded at about $0.0064, with a market capitalization of about $3.2 million and 24-hour trading volume of about $1,800. These figures are snapshots, not a measure of guaranteed liquidity or future value. The relatively low reported trading volume can make it harder to buy or sell larger amounts without affecting the price. Check current market information before making any financial decision, and do not treat historical performance as a forecast.
## Risks and storing GRC
GRC carries the risks common to smaller cryptocurrencies, including sharp price changes, limited trading liquidity, and the possibility that demand or project activity may decline. The Proof of Research model also depends on functioning software, eligible research workloads, and continued participation. Staking or contributing computing power does not remove market risk or guarantee earnings. Computing tasks can use electricity and place sustained load on a device, so monitor hardware and power consumption. GRC is the coin of the Gridcoin network, so use a wallet that explicitly supports Gridcoin rather than assuming a wallet for another chain can store it. Keep recovery information private, make a secure backup, and beware of requests for your seed phrase or private keys. Losing access credentials may mean losing access to your coins, while sending GRC to an incompatible address can result in an unrecoverable transfer. Never share private keys or recovery phrases.
By the numbers
Gridcoin in numbers
Gridcoin (GRC) is ranked #2,134 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $2.72M and a price of $0.005375 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $2.92M, so roughly 93% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 22.1% over 7 days, down 45.4% over 30 days, up 65.8% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $0.2142, set on Jan 8, 2018.
About 506.09M GRC are in circulation, from a total supply of 543.43M. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $714, or 0.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

GRC FAQs
Is Gridcoin mined?
Gridcoin uses a Proof of Research model linked to computing contributions through BOINC, alongside proof of stake. It is not conventional proof-of-work mining based on competing to solve cryptographic puzzles.
Is GRC an ERC-20 token?
GRC is the native coin of the Gridcoin blockchain, rather than a token issued on a separate chain such as Ethereum. Use a wallet that specifically supports Gridcoin.
Can you earn GRC by contributing computing power?
Gridcoin connects eligible BOINC computing contributions with GRC rewards, and GRC can also be staked within its network. Participation does not guarantee a reward, and the coin’s market value can change substantially.
What is the supply of GRC?
As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating supply was about 506.1 million GRC and total supply about 543.3 million GRC. No maximum supply figure was reported, and supply figures can change.
How do you store Gridcoin safely?
Store GRC in a wallet that supports the Gridcoin network, and keep its recovery phrase or private keys private and securely backed up. Sending coins to an incompatible address may result in permanent loss.
What is the market cap of Gridcoin?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Gridcoin had a market cap of about $2.72M, ranking #2,134 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of GRC?
Gridcoin's all-time high is $0.2142, reached on Jan 8, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.0006065 (Jun 3, 2015). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of GRC?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 506.09M GRC were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
