Counterparty (XCP): What It Is, Uses and Risks

What Counterparty (XCP) is
Counterparty is a platform for user-created assets that sits on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. It combines a protocol, a set of specifications and an API, so people can create and trade assets without a separate chain. Its design connects directly to Bitcoin, which means it inherits Bitcoin's security and reliability along with its limits. The project launched on 2014-01-02, before Ethereum's launch, and it was the earliest mechanism for asset creation on the Bitcoin base layer. The project itself says it has faded from prominence, largely because the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum became the dominant way to issue tokens. Its listed consensus or hashing method is SHA-256, and CoinGecko categorises it under smart contract platform and proof of work.
What the token is used for
XCP is the native currency of the Counterparty protocol. Its main job, as public documentation describes it, is to fill roles where Bitcoin's own token cannot easily act as the working currency inside Counterparty. Examples include paying certain fees and serving as a base for trading other Counterparty assets. Public reporting describes XCP as usable for bets and trades that do not rely on trust in the other party, and for burn balances used in the protocol. Users can also trade Counterparty assets against XCP and against Bitcoin through tools such as dispensers. Some uses described in public material are tied to gambling-style features, so readers should treat those as separate from the token itself.
Supply and price history
At the time of writing, as of 2026-10-26, the supply data shows about 2.59 million XCP in circulation and about 2.65 million in total supply. No maximum supply is listed in the data, so the cap is not confirmed. The same data gives a price of about 4.31 US dollars, a market capitalisation of about 11.1 million US dollars and a rank of 1182 by market cap. Over the past seven days the price is down about 9.4 percent, and over the past year it is up about 40 percent. The all-time high was about 91.13 US dollars on 2018-01-09, and the all-time low was about 0.134 US dollars on 2019-10-25. Trading volume over 24 hours is not available in the data. These figures change constantly and should be checked on a live source.
Risks and limits
Counterparty carries the security properties of Bitcoin, but it also carries Bitcoin's constraints, such as slower confirmation times and higher fees during busy periods. The project has faded from prominence, so developer activity, user numbers and exchange support may be limited compared with larger platforms. Market cap is small and trading volume data is unavailable, which can mean wide price swings and difficulty exiting positions at a fair price. Smart contract and asset features are less flexible than those on Ethereum-based standards. Gambling-style uses carry their own legal and financial risks. Readers must be 18+ (21+ where required) and should check that online gambling is legal where they live. Nothing here is advice to buy or sell XCP, and past price moves do not predict future results.
Storage and practical notes
Holders of XCP usually keep it in a wallet that supports Counterparty assets, and it is worth confirming that a wallet explicitly supports XCP before sending funds. Mistakes in address or asset type can cause loss, and transactions on the Bitcoin base layer cannot be reversed. Anyone who wants to use Counterparty should first test with a small amount and read the current protocol documentation, because specifications and tools can change. Checking the official project channels and verifying contract or asset details independently is a sensible habit. Storage and custody choices should match the amount at risk and the reader's own experience.
By the numbers
Counterparty in numbers
Counterparty (XCP) is ranked #1,163 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $11.1M and a price of $4.31 as of Oct 26, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($11.4M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 9.4% over 7 days, down 6.7% over 30 days, up 40.1% over the past year. It trades about 95% below its all-time high of $91.13, set on Jan 9, 2018.
About 2.59M XCP are in circulation, from a total supply of 2.65M. No hard maximum supply is listed.

XCP FAQs
What is XCP used for?
XCP is the native currency of the Counterparty protocol. It is used inside that system for certain functions that Bitcoin's own token cannot easily perform there. It is not the same as Bitcoin.
Is there a maximum supply of XCP?
The supply data shows about 2.59 million XCP in circulation and about 2.65 million in total as of 2026-10-26. The data lists no maximum supply, so no fixed cap is confirmed.
Is Counterparty still widely used?
Counterparty launched on 2014-01-02, before Ethereum. The project's own description says it has faded from prominence, mainly because ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum became the standard for issuing assets.
How is Counterparty different from Ethereum?
Counterparty is built on the Bitcoin blockchain and integrates directly with it, while Ethereum uses its own chain and smart contracts. Counterparty can be used to create assets on Bitcoin, but it has fewer tools and less developer activity than Ethereum-based standards.
Should I buy XCP?
This page does not give investment advice. Price data changes constantly, and the token has large past swings. Readers should check live sources and their own risk tolerance before making any decision.
What is the market cap of Counterparty?
As of Oct 26, 2026, Counterparty had a market cap of about $11.1M, ranking #1,163 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of XCP?
Counterparty's all-time high is $91.13, reached on Jan 9, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.1344 (Oct 25, 2019). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of XCP?
As of Oct 26, 2026, about 2.59M XCP were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
