## What is Obyte (GBYTE)?

Obyte is a distributed ledger that uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) rather than arranging transactions into blocks. Its native currency is GBYTE, and the smallest unit is called a Byte: one GBYTE equals one billion Bytes. Obyte’s network launched in 2016 and supports decentralized applications (dApps).

The project’s design does not use miners to produce blocks. Instead, transactions are recorded in the DAG structure. Obyte says this approach can reduce opportunities for miner-based transaction manipulation, but it does not remove every risk associated with dApps or transaction execution. The network also supports Oscript, a language intended for writing its dApps.

In short, GBYTE is the currency associated with the Obyte network, while Obyte is the ledger and application platform. It is not the same thing as a token issued on another blockchain, even when a bridged or wrapped GBYTE representation is available there.

## What is GBYTE used for?

GBYTE is used as Obyte’s currency unit. The project also describes applications on the network involving decentralized finance, self-sovereign identity, private currencies, and textcoins, which allow crypto to be sent using an email address. Discount Stablecoins is one named Obyte dApp. These features describe the platform’s intended uses; they do not guarantee that a particular dApp is active, secure, or widely used.

Obyte’s structure may appeal to developers looking for an alternative to block-based ledgers. The project presents Oscript as a way to avoid some unsafe programming patterns, but code written in any language can still contain defects. Users should assess each dApp separately and understand what permissions or funds they are committing.

GBYTE’s usefulness depends in part on continued network activity, wallet support, and the availability of applications and exchanges. A token’s stated role on a platform should not be taken as evidence that it will gain value or that its applications will succeed.

## GBYTE supply and market context

As of November 5, 2026, the reported circulating supply was about 947,246 GBYTE, against a total supply of 1 million. No maximum supply was listed. Supply figures can change, so check current network or market information before relying on them. GBYTE is divisible into Bytes, with one GBYTE equal to one billion Bytes.

On that date, GBYTE was about $4.63, with a market capitalization of roughly $4.4 million and 24-hour trading volume of about $7,200. These are time-specific figures, not a forecast or a measure of how easily a large amount can be traded. A comparatively low trading volume can make prices more sensitive to individual trades and can make it harder to buy or sell at a preferred price.

Crypto prices and market values are volatile. Historical prices, including past highs or lows, do not indicate what GBYTE will be worth in the future. This information is not a recommendation to buy or sell.

## Networks and storage

Obyte’s DAG ledger is the network associated with native GBYTE. GBYTE representations are also listed as issued on BNB Chain, Polygon, Kava, and Ethereum. These are separate networks, so a GBYTE token on one of them should not automatically be treated as native GBYTE on Obyte. Moving assets between networks can involve a bridge or other conversion process; confirm the exact asset, network, and receiving address before sending funds.

Using the wrong network or address can result in funds that are difficult or impossible to recover. Bridged tokens also depend on the mechanisms and operators that support the bridge, adding risks beyond those of the underlying asset. Availability and support can differ between wallets and exchanges, so check that the service supports the specific GBYTE version you hold.

For storage, use a wallet that explicitly supports Obyte and the relevant network. Keep recovery phrases and private keys offline and private, and verify transaction details before approval. A wallet’s support for one GBYTE representation does not necessarily mean it supports all the others.

## Risks to understand

GBYTE carries the risks common to crypto assets, including sharp price changes, limited liquidity, and the possibility of losing some or all of the amount held. Obyte dApps can have software or security flaws, and using a dApp may expose funds to risks that are separate from holding GBYTE itself. The DAG design and Oscript do not guarantee that applications or transactions are free from vulnerabilities.

There are additional risks when using GBYTE representations on other chains. Bridges and wrapped assets can fail, be exploited, or lose support, and choosing the wrong network can lead to lost funds. Before using a dApp or moving tokens, check the asset type, network, fees, and any permissions requested. Never share a recovery phrase or private key with a website, app, or person.

Treat claims about decentralization, safety, or future adoption as claims to evaluate rather than guarantees. Do your own research and only commit funds you can afford to lose; do not rely on past performance or a quoted market value as a prediction.

By the numbers

Obyte in numbers

Obyte (GBYTE) is ranked #1,836 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $4.00M and a price of $4.22 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $4.22M, so roughly 95% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 0.9% over 7 days, down 5.3% over 30 days, up 86.5% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $1,185, set on Jan 12, 2018.

About 948.25K GBYTE are in circulation, from a total supply of 1M. No hard maximum supply is listed.

24-hour trading volume was about $6.34K, or 0.2% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

GBYTE has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including BNB Chain, Polygon, Kava, Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

GBYTE FAQs

What is GBYTE?

GBYTE is Obyte’s currency unit, and one GBYTE is equal to one billion Bytes. Bytes are the smallest denomination of the currency.

How does the Obyte network work?

Obyte uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to record transactions rather than organizing them into blocks produced by miners. Its network also supports dApps.

How many GBYTE are in circulation?

As of November 5, 2026, the reported circulating supply was about 947,246 GBYTE and total supply was 1 million. No maximum supply was listed; figures may change.

Which networks support GBYTE?

GBYTE representations are listed on BNB Chain, Polygon, Kava, and Ethereum, as well as the Obyte network. Confirm the exact network and asset type with your wallet or exchange before sending.

How can I store GBYTE?

Use a wallet that explicitly supports the Obyte network or the specific other-chain representation you hold. Keep your recovery phrase private and verify the network and address before transferring tokens.

What are the main risks of GBYTE?

GBYTE can be exposed to price volatility, limited liquidity, dApp vulnerabilities, and risks from bridges or wrapped tokens on other networks. Its technical design does not eliminate these risks.

What is the market cap of Obyte?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Obyte had a market cap of about $4.00M, ranking #1,836 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of GBYTE?

Obyte's all-time high is $1,185, reached on Jan 12, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.8382 (Nov 27, 2023). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of GBYTE?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 948.25K GBYTE were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.

Which blockchains is GBYTE on?

It has token contracts on BNB Chain, Polygon, Kava, Ethereum.
