ActiveMetaMask Swap Review 2026: In-Wallet DEX Aggregation and Fees
MetaMask Swap is the token-swap feature inside the self-custody MetaMask wallet, comparing prices across decentralized exchanges. It is convenient for same-chain swaps, but a built-in service fee and single-network limits make it worth comparing against a direct DEX.

Our verdict on Metamask Swap
7.0/10MetaMask Swap suits existing MetaMask users who want quick same-chain token swaps without opening a DEX site, and who value self-custody. Its main strength is convenience: quotes from several DEXs inside a familiar wallet, with hardware wallet support. The main caveat is cost and scope. A service fee reported at 0.875% sits on top of gas, and swaps cannot cross chains. Compare the quote with a direct DEX or aggregator for larger trades.

What is Metamask Swap?
MetaMask Swap is the built-in token exchange feature of the MetaMask wallet, which was created by Consensys in 2016 as open-source software. It lets you swap tokens on the same network without opening a separate decentralized exchange.
The feature was introduced in October 2020 as a way to get the best prices across several DEXs from within the wallet. Early sources named Kyberswap, 1inch and Uniswap among them. MetaMask's own description of the product is to access, store and swap tokens from a self-custodial wallet.
The tradeoff is convenience against cost and reach. A built-in service fee, reported at 0.875% by one guide, applies on top of gas. Swaps stay within one network, so cross-chain trades and pairs such as ETH to BTC are not covered.
How Metamask Swap works
You pick two tokens on the same network and an amount. MetaMask asks several decentralized exchanges and aggregators for quotes and shows a route that is meant to give a competitive price. A decentralized exchange is a set of smart contracts that swap tokens against liquidity pools, with no order book or account.
When you confirm, you sign a transaction from your wallet. The contract executes the trade on the blockchain and the new tokens arrive in the same wallet. You pay network gas, plus MetaMask's service fee, which one guide reports as 0.875%. Because it is on-chain, a trade can fail if the price moves past your slippage limit, and gas may still be spent.
Swaps only work within one network. A forum discussion notes that you cannot make a cross-chain swap this way, and a user reports that ETH to BTC is not supported. For that you need a bridge or another service.
7 features
Key features
01
In-wallet token swaps
Swaps are quoted inside the wallet, so you do not have to connect to a separate DEX website for common trades.
02
DEX aggregation
At launch in 2020, swaps pulled prices from several decentralized exchanges, with Kyberswap, 1inch and Uniswap named as sources. The aim was best prices across them.
03
Self-custody
Tokens stay in your own MetaMask wallet, and you sign each swap yourself. MetaMask does not take custody of funds.
04
Multi-network support
The wallet works on Ethereum and on networks such as BNB Smart Chain once you add or select the network, and swaps are same-network only.
05
Hardware wallet signing
Ledger users can swap by connecting the hardware wallet to MetaMask and approving the transaction on the device.
06
Gasless swap option
A fee guide mentions gasless swaps as an option, though availability depends on the network and token.
07
Browser and mobile access
Available as a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Brave, and as a mobile app, so swaps can be done on desktop or phone.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Swaps run inside a wallet many users already have, with no need to connect to another site
- Aggregates quotes from several decentralized exchanges rather than relying on one pool
- Self-custodial, so MetaMask does not hold your tokens
- Works with Ledger hardware wallets for transaction signing
- Available as a browser extension and a mobile app
Watch out for
- A service fee is added on top of network gas; one guide reports it at 0.875%, which is higher than many direct DEX routes
- It only swaps within a single network, so cross-chain moves and pairs like ETH to BTC are not supported
- Failed swaps can still cost gas, and slippage on thin tokens can be large
- You must manage your own keys; a lost recovery phrase or a phishing signature cannot be reversed
- Fee and routing details can change, and MetaMask does not present a single fixed fee schedule in the material reviewed
- Regulatory scrutiny of the wallet's swap feature has been raised in at least one fee-and-risk guide
Metamask Swap fees
You pay the network gas fee for the chain you swap on, plus a MetaMask service fee. One fee guide reports this MetaMask fee at 0.875%. It also mentions gasless swaps and notes that failed swaps can still cost gas.
The exact fee, any slippage setting and the gas estimate are shown in the swap quote before you confirm, so that is where you should check the all-in cost. No fixed fee table is published in the material reviewed here.
Is Metamask Swap safe?
MetaMask is self-custodial: you hold the keys, and funds are not on a MetaMask exchange account. This removes counterparty risk from a custodian, but it puts the burden of securing the recovery phrase on you. Phishing sites, fake tokens and malicious signature requests are the usual ways users lose funds, so verify token addresses and read every prompt.
Swaps execute through third-party DEX smart contracts, which carry their own contract and liquidity risk. Audit details for the swap routing are not given in the material reviewed here. One fee-and-risk guide also references a US SEC case relating to the swap feature, so regulatory status is worth checking in your own jurisdiction. Using a hardware wallet such as Ledger adds a layer of protection for signing.
7 steps
How to get started with Metamask Swap
- 1
Install the MetaMask browser extension or mobile app from the official source and create a wallet.
- 2
Write down your recovery phrase offline and never share it.
- 3
Fund the wallet with the native token of your chosen network, such as ETH or BNB, to cover gas.
- 4
Select the correct network, and add it manually if it is not already listed.
- 5
Open the Swap function, choose the token you hold and the token you want, and enter an amount.
- 6
Review the quote, the service fee, gas and slippage, then confirm and sign the transaction.
- 7
Check the received token appears in your wallet; import the token contract address only after verifying it.
Who Metamask Swap is for
MetaMask Swap is for people who already use the MetaMask wallet and want simple swaps on Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain without learning a separate DEX interface. It is less suited to cost-sensitive traders making large or frequent swaps, and to anyone needing cross-chain moves or assets like BTC.
Metamask Swap FAQs
What is MetaMask Swap?
MetaMask Swap is a feature inside the MetaMask wallet that lets you exchange one token for another without leaving the wallet. It gets quotes from decentralized exchanges and aggregators and routes the trade for you.
How much does MetaMask Swap cost?
One fee guide reports a MetaMask fee of 0.875% on swaps, on top of the network gas fee. MetaMask can change this, so check the quote shown in the wallet before you confirm.
Can I swap ETH for BTC or move tokens between chains?
Not directly. Swaps happen within one network, and a forum thread notes that you cannot make a cross-chain swap that way. A user also complains that ETH to BTC is not possible. Moving between chains needs a bridge or another service.
Is MetaMask Swap safe?
The wallet is self-custodial, so MetaMask does not hold your tokens. Swaps still run through smart contracts on DEXs, so there is contract risk, slippage and the chance of signing something malicious. Check the quote and the token address first.
Can I use a hardware wallet with MetaMask Swap?
Yes. A Ledger hardware wallet can be connected to MetaMask, and you confirm swap transactions on the device. This keeps the signing key off your computer.
How is MetaMask Swap different from using a DEX like PancakeSwap?
A DEX gives you more options on routes and pairs, as one forum reply puts it. MetaMask Swap is more convenient because quotes and routing are built into the wallet, but you pay a service fee for that.
