Our verdict on Hashmasks

5.2/10

Hashmasks suits collectors who want a historic, trait-based NFT collection on Ethereum and are comfortable judging value by resale prices. Its main strength is its place in early NFT art history and a clear, fixed set of tokens. The main caveat is that value depends entirely on secondary-market demand, and the official site and fee and royalty terms could not be confirmed from the material available.

What is Hashmasks?

Hashmasks is an NFT collection of 16,384 Tiki-style portraits, minted on Ethereum and created by more than 70 artists. Third-party coverage describes it as one of the most influential NFT projects, and one search result reports a rare piece selling for about $650,000 in ether in February 2021.

The collection is a collectibles product. Holders own individual tokens, and value comes from artwork, traits and the willingness of other collectors to pay for them. There is no staking, lending or yield feature in the material reviewed.

The official website could not be retrieved, so details about the team, roadmap, royalties and any ongoing development are not confirmed here. Current pages in the results show sale prices for individual tokens, along with the trait data and vault listings that surround them.

How Hashmasks works

Hashmasks is a set of 16,384 digital portraits minted as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum. Each token has its own ID and a set of traits, such as mask, street, background, skin colour and eye colour. Ownership is recorded on the Ethereum blockchain, so the holder of a token is shown by the chain rather than by a company register.

The collection was created by more than 70 artists, according to a third-party write-up, and the traits are what collectors use to compare tokens. Some traits are rarer than others, and a rare trait can raise the price of a token relative to the rest of the set.

Prices are set by buyers and sellers on NFT marketplaces. Some Hashmasks have also been placed in NFTX vaults, a third-party protocol that pools NFTs so that holders can swap a vault token for an item in the pool. That is a separate contract with its own rules, and it is not run by the Hashmasks creators.

4 features

Key features

01

Large Fixed Collection

The collection contains 16,384 portraits, each a separate ERC-721 token on Ethereum.

02

Trait-Based Artwork

Portraits are built from traits such as mask, street, background, skin colour and eye colour, which drive how collectors value individual tokens.

03

Multi-Artist Creation

Many artists contributed to the set, which is part of why the project is described as a community-built artwork.

04

Secondary Market Trading

Tokens trade on secondary NFT markets and in some third-party vaults, so buyers can see sale history for each item.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • A fixed set of 16,384 portraits on Ethereum, with ownership recorded on a public chain.
  • Trait-based design gives collectors a clear basis for comparing tokens.
  • Built with contributions from more than 70 artists.
  • Tokens trade on several public NFT marketplaces, so sale history is visible for individual items.
  • Has a documented place in early NFT history, according to third-party coverage.

Watch out for

  • Value depends on what collectors will pay, and recent sale prices in public reporting vary widely between tokens.
  • Trading activity in the results shows sales in ETH, so prices move with the ether price as well as with demand for the collection.
  • The official site could not be retrieved, so details about the team, roadmap and any royalty terms are not confirmed here.
  • Third-party listings and vaults are separate products with their own fees and risks, which new buyers can easily overlook.
  • As an ERC-721 collection, each token is a separate item, and ownership rights beyond the token itself depend on terms that were not available publicly.

Hashmasks fees

Fees for buying or selling Hashmasks are not set by a single project platform. Buyers pay Ethereum network fees (gas) and any marketplace or vault fees charged by the venue they use. Creator royalty terms were not confirmed publicly, and the project does not publish a fee schedule in the material reviewed.

Is Hashmasks safe?

Hashmasks is an NFT collection, so the main risks are market and counterparty risks rather than deposit or custody risks in a company's hands. The tokens are held in the buyer's own Ethereum wallet, and the buyer is responsible for keeping the wallet's recovery phrase private.

Smart-contract risk applies to the token contract and to any third-party marketplace or vault. Vault products such as NFTX add their own contracts and fee rules, and a bug or exploit in those contracts would affect holders who use them. Public sources reviewed do not include a smart-contract audit report for the Hashmasks contract.

Regulatory status depends on where the buyer lives, and the project's legal structure was not established. Buyers should check local rules on crypto assets and tax treatment before buying.

6 steps

How to get started with Hashmasks

  1. 1

Set up an Ethereum wallet that supports ERC-721 tokens.

  2. 2

Fund the wallet with ETH to cover the token price and network fees.

  3. 3

Look up the token you want by its number, such as the trait and sale history on a public marketplace.

  4. 4

Check recent sales and current listings for that specific token, not just the collection average.

  5. 5

Buy through a reputable NFT marketplace and confirm the contract address matches the Hashmasks collection.

  6. 6

Store the token in your wallet and keep records of the purchase price for tax purposes where relevant.

Who Hashmasks is for

Hashmasks is aimed at NFT collectors and digital art buyers who already hold ETH and an Ethereum wallet, and who want to buy an established collection rather than a newer project. It is less suited to buyers who need a predictable return or a published fee schedule.

Hashmasks FAQs

What is Hashmasks?

Hashmasks is an NFT collection of 16,384 Tiki-style portrait tokens on Ethereum. Each token is an ERC-721 item with its own traits, such as mask, street, background and eye colour. The collection was built by more than 70 artists.

How much do Hashmasks NFTs cost?

Public reporting shows individual Hashmasks trading in ETH, with examples ranging from around 0.06 ETH to about 11 ETH for specific tokens. These figures are single listings or sales, not a price index, and they change with market demand and the ether price.

How do I buy a Hashmasks NFT?

Hashmasks tokens are on Ethereum and follow the ERC-721 standard. Buyers typically need an Ethereum wallet and ETH to purchase on secondary markets. Some tokens are also shown in NFTX vaults, which is a separate mechanism.

What is the NFTX listing for Hashmasks?

NFTX is a third-party protocol that pools NFTs into vaults so that holders can trade vault tokens for a basket item. Public reporting shows at least one Hashmasks token listed there. Vault mechanics add fees and smart-contract exposure on top of the NFT price.
