Activef(x) Protocol Review 2026: fxUSD and Leverage Without Liquidation
f(x) Protocol is an Ethereum DeFi platform that mints the fxUSD stablecoin against stETH and WBTC and uses it to offer fixed-leverage ETH and BTC positions with a rebalancing mechanism in place of standard liquidation. The main trade-off is a more complex design with its own tail risks.

Our verdict on fx Protocol
7.0/10f(x) Protocol suits experienced DeFi users who want leveraged ETH or BTC exposure and stablecoin yield on Ethereum, and who are comfortable reading a more complex mechanism. Its main strength is the rebalancing design, which aims to avoid standard liquidations and funding fees. The main caveat is that leverage still amplifies losses, and the protocol itself acknowledges bad-debt and de-peg scenarios. Beginners should read the docs thoroughly and start small.

What is fx Protocol?
f(x) Protocol is an Ethereum-based DeFi platform from the Aladdin DAO ecosystem. It mints a stablecoin called fxUSD and uses it to power leveraged ETH and WBTC positions. DefiLlama lists it as a dual-token stablecoin project, with about $116 million in TVL and listing since August 2023.
The pitch is leverage with less liquidation risk. Instead of a standard liquidation, its Liquidation Brake rebalances a position that nears its liquidation price. The homepage also says no funding fees are charged under normal circumstances.
Stakers can earn yield through a stability pool, which supports fxUSD's peg. The native token is FXN. DefiLlama lists two audits, though public sources do not name the auditors.
How fx Protocol works
f(x) Protocol mints fxUSD, a stablecoin backed by collateral such as wstETH and WBTC. fxUSD can be minted and redeemed at the oracle price, and if it trades below peg it can be redeemed for stETH or WBTC.
That stablecoin supply funds leveraged positions. In v2.1, a user opens a fixed-leverage long (xPOSITION, up to 7x) or short (sPOSITION, up to 6x) on ETH or WBTC. When a position nears the price where a normal perpetual exchange would liquidate it, the protocol rebalances it to a different leverage level instead, charging a small fee. Liquidation can still occur if rebalancing fails.
The stability pool takes USDC or fxUSD and earns yield from stETH staking, opening fees and FXN emissions. It also supports the peg by buying fxUSD below peg and selling above it. A reserve fund, built from part of protocol revenue, is meant to cover bad debt, and if it falls short the loss is shared among position holders.

Key features
01
Fixed-leverage positions
Open long positions up to 7x and short positions up to 6x on ETH and WBTC, fully on-chain, under the v2.1 design.
02
Liquidation Brake
Positions close to a normal liquidation price are rebalanced to a different leverage level rather than closed outright, for a small fee.
03
Minimal funding costs
No funding fees are charged under normal circumstances, apart from a temporary charge if fxUSD stays below peg.
04
Stability pool
A pool accepting fxUSD and USDC that earns yield from stETH staking, opening fees and FXN emissions, and helps defend the peg.
05
fxUSD stablecoin
Stablecoin minted against stETH and WBTC that can be redeemed at the oracle price for the underlying collateral.
06
fxSAVE and LP options
The homepage lists an auto-compounding vault and liquidity pools such as fxUSD/USDC and FXN/ETH as additional ways to earn.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Fixed leverage up to 7x long and 6x short on ETH and WBTC, fully on-chain.
- Rebalancing mechanism designed to reduce liquidation risk compared with a standard perpetual exchange.
- No funding fees under normal conditions, per the project.
- Stablecoin can be redeemed at the oracle price for stETH or WBTC, which supports the peg.
- Roughly $116 million TVL and two audits listed on DefiLlama, with a listing history since 2023.
- Contracts are published on GitHub and governance proposals are visible publicly.
Watch out for
- Leverage amplifies losses as well as gains, and the protocol itself says rebalancing does not eliminate the risk of losing money.
- Bad debt is possible if both rebalancing and liquidation fail; if the reserve fund is short, losses are spread across all xPOSITION/sPOSITION holders.
- In v1, leveraged xTokens could in extreme cases fall to zero.
- fxUSD can de-peg temporarily in a prolonged market decline, and recovery depends partly on the underlying market rebounding.
- The mechanism (fixed leverage, rebalancing, stability pool, v1 and v2.1) is more complex than a standard perpetual exchange.
- Runs only on Ethereum, so users pay Ethereum gas costs and have no other chain options.
fx Protocol fees
The documentation lists an opening fee of 0.3%, which it describes as among the lowest trading commissions. The homepage says no funding fees are charged under normal circumstances, but a temporary funding cost can apply to xPOSITIONs if fxUSD trades below peg for too long.
Rebalancing carries a small fee, and Ethereum gas costs apply to every transaction. Other fee settings are on the official docs fees page, which should be checked before trading.
Is fx Protocol safe?
DefiLlama lists two audits for f(x) Protocol, and the contract repository is public on GitHub. The project does not name the auditors or report any incident, so readers should check the audit reports in the official docs. A security bounty program is referenced in the documentation, according to public reporting.
The main risks are smart-contract risk, oracle dependence, and the design's own tail scenarios. The protocol states that bad debt is possible, that a reserve fund exists to cover it, and that remaining losses would be shared among position holders. Leverage can still lose money, and v1 xTokens could in extreme cases fall to zero. Use only funds you can afford to lose.
6 steps
How to get started with fx Protocol
- 1
Read the official docs and the sections on v1 versus v2.1 so you know which product you are using.
- 2
Connect an Ethereum wallet to the official site and double-check the address to avoid imitation sites.
- 3
Decide on the goal: mint fxUSD, deposit in the stability pool for yield, or open an xPOSITION or sPOSITION.
- 4
Start with a small amount and check the opening fee and rebalancing terms before you commit.
- 5
Monitor your position and the fxUSD peg, and understand when rebalancing or liquidation can occur.
- 6
Review the reserve fund and bad-debt rules before sizing up.
Who fx Protocol is for
This is for intermediate to advanced DeFi users who already hold or want exposure to ETH or BTC, want fixed leverage without constant liquidation monitoring, or want to earn stablecoin yield through a stability pool. It is not suited to anyone who cannot accept the risk of losing the money they put in.
fx Protocol FAQs
What is fxUSD?
fxUSD is the stablecoin minted by f(x) Protocol. The project says it is fully collateralized by assets such as stETH and WBTC and is not an algorithmic stablecoin. It can be minted and redeemed at the oracle price.
How much leverage does f(x) Protocol offer?
The protocol says v2.1 offers up to 7x long exposure (xPOSITION) and up to 6x short exposure (sPOSITION) on ETH and WBTC. Its v1 offers variable-leverage tokens with up to 4.3x on ETH and 5.6x on WBTC.
Can positions be liquidated?
Not in the usual way. Under its Liquidation Brake, a position nearing its liquidation price is rebalanced to a different leverage level for a small fee. In extreme cases where rebalancing fails, liquidation can still happen.
Are there funding fees?
The homepage says it does not charge funding fees under normal circumstances. If fxUSD trades below peg for too long, xPOSITIONs can be charged a temporary funding cost that goes to the stability pool.
What is the stability pool?
The stability pool accepts USDC and fxUSD. According to the project, its yield comes from stETH staking, position opening fees and FXN emissions, and it acts as a peg keeper by buying fxUSD below peg. Yields vary and are not guaranteed.
What is the FXN token?
FXN is the protocol's native token. Public reporting shows a token page naming a supply of 2,000,000 FXN, but check the current official tokenomics for up-to-date details.
