ActiveEigenLayer Review 2026: Restaking ETH to Secure Other Services
EigenLayer is an Ethereum restaking protocol, now branded EigenCloud, that lets staked ETH secure additional services for extra yield. The upside comes with added slashing and smart-contract risk.

Our verdict on Eigenlayer
7.0/10EigenLayer suits experienced ETH stakers who understand slashing and want extra yield by securing other services, as well as builders who want Ethereum-backed security without launching their own validator set. Its main strength is being the best-established restaking protocol, with a large share of the category. The main caveat is layered risk: extra slashing conditions, smart-contract and operator exposure, weak reported fee revenue and an inflationary token. Beginners should understand plain staking first and size positions carefully.

What is Eigenlayer?
EigenLayer is a restaking protocol on Ethereum. It lets ETH that is already staked, or liquid staking tokens backed by it, secure additional third-party services called Actively Validated Services. The EIGEN token contract has been live on Ethereum since October 2023, and a bridged version exists on Base.
The project has rebranded as EigenCloud and now describes itself as a developer platform for verifiable onchain and offchain applications, services and AI. One source reports total value locked of about 6.5 billion dollars at the end of August 2026, roughly two thirds of the restaking category, and well below its 2024 to 2025 peak.
The same source notes that protocol fee revenue ranks among the weakest of its peers, and that ether.fi, previously its largest integrated partner, has been unwinding restaking exposure. The sources reviewed give no audit reports, team details or fee schedule for the protocol.
How Eigenlayer works
Ethereum stakers lock ETH to help secure the network and risk slashing, a penalty for misbehaviour. Running a validator directly needs 32 ETH, so many people stake through providers like Lido or Rocket Pool and receive a liquid staking token as a receipt.
EigenLayer lets that stake, or the liquid staking token, be pledged a second time to other services. These services are called Actively Validated Services. Each one defines tasks and slashing rules, and operators run the software that performs the work. Stakers delegate to operators and take on the extra conditions of the services those operators support.
In return, stakers can earn additional rewards beyond normal Ethereum staking. The service gets security from existing Ethereum capital instead of bootstrapping its own token and validator set. The trade-off is that a fault in an operator or service can lead to additional slashing.

Key features
01
Native ETH restaking
ETH that is already staked can also back external services, so those services do not need their own separate capital and validator sets.
02
Liquid staking token support
Holders of liquid staking tokens from providers such as Lido or Rocket Pool can restake them to support additional services.
03
Actively Validated Services
Services called Actively Validated Services borrow Ethereum-grade security, including data layers, bridges, oracles and other networks.
04
Opt-in slashing and rewards
Stakers who opt in to extra services take on extra slashing conditions in exchange for additional yield.
05
EIGEN governance
EIGEN holders vote through EigenLayer Improvement Proposals, and emissions are used to reward participants and builders.
06
EigenCloud developer platform
The EigenCloud brand positions the platform as a developer platform for verifiable onchain and offchain apps, services and AI.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Pioneered restaking, so ETH can secure other services without separate capital
- Holds a large share of the restaking category by total value locked, per one source
- Supports both native ETH and liquid staking tokens
- EIGEN has a defined governance process through EigenLayer Improvement Proposals
- Investor and contributor allocations carried a three-year lockup, per one source
- Gives services a way to borrow Ethereum-grade security instead of building their own
Watch out for
- Opting in to extra services adds slashing risk on top of normal Ethereum staking risk
- Protocol fee revenue is reported to rank among the weakest of comparable peers
- The largest integrated partner is reported to be unwinding its restaking exposure
- EIGEN supply is inflationary, with issuance near 4% per year and no fixed maximum
- Audit reports, team details and fee schedules are not set out in the sources reviewed
- Smart-contract and operator risk applies, and the model is more complex than plain staking
Eigenlayer fees
EigenLayer's own fee schedule is not published in the sources reviewed. Costs for a user generally include Ethereum network gas for depositing, delegating and withdrawing, plus any commission or fee taken by the operator you delegate to or the liquid restaking provider you use.
One source reports that protocol fee revenue is among the weakest of comparable peers. Users should check the current terms for their chosen operator and service in the app before depositing.
Is Eigenlayer safe?
Restaking adds risk on top of Ethereum staking. Opting in to a service means accepting its slashing rules, so a fault by an operator or a service can reduce your stake. Smart-contract bugs and operator failures are additional risks, and liquid restaking providers add their own layers.
The sources reviewed do not list audit reports, bug bounties or past security incidents for the protocol, so readers should check the project's documentation and recent reports before depositing. Regulatory treatment of restaking and the EIGEN token varies by country and is not covered in the sources. This is not financial advice.
6 steps
How to get started with Eigenlayer
- 1
Read how restaking and slashing work, and decide whether you accept the extra risk.
- 2
Get ETH, or stake ETH with a liquid staking provider to receive a liquid staking token.
- 3
Connect a compatible Ethereum wallet to the official EigenLayer app, after confirming the address from the project's own channels.
- 4
Choose an operator to delegate to and review which services they validate and what slashing conditions apply.
- 5
Deposit the supported asset and delegate, starting with an amount you can afford to lose.
- 6
Monitor your position, operator performance and any withdrawal delay before exiting.
Who Eigenlayer is for
EigenLayer is for ETH holders and liquid staking token users who are comfortable with slashing risk and want additional yield, and for developers building services that need Ethereum-backed security. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants simple, low-risk staking or who is not ready to evaluate operators and service terms.
Eigenlayer FAQs
What is EigenLayer restaking?
Restaking means reusing ETH that is already staked, or a liquid staking token backed by it, to secure other services as well as Ethereum. In return the staker can earn extra rewards, but also accepts extra slashing conditions set by those services.
What is an AVS on EigenLayer?
AVS stands for Actively Validated Service. It is a service, such as a data availability layer, bridge, oracle or other network, that borrows Ethereum-staked capital for security instead of building its own validator set.
What is the EIGEN token used for?
EIGEN is the protocol's governance and incentive token. Holders take part in governance through EigenLayer Improvement Proposals, and emissions are used to reward participants securing AVSs and builders on the platform.
How was EIGEN distributed?
One source reports that EIGEN was first distributed through a staking-based stakedrop, and that the token was non-transferable in its first season. Eligibility rules changed across seasons, so check the project's own channels for current details.
Is EigenLayer safe?
The main risks are slashing if an operator or AVS misbehaves, bugs in smart contracts, and reliance on the operators you delegate to. Restaking is also newer and more complex than ordinary staking, and returns are not guaranteed.
Is EigenLayer the same as EigenCloud?
EigenLayer has rebranded as EigenCloud. It now positions itself as a developer platform for verifiable onchain and offchain applications, services and AI, while the token and on-chain name remain EIGEN.
