## What is NEM (XEM)?
NEM is a blockchain platform launched in March 2015, and XEM is its cryptocurrency. The project introduced features including user-created tokens called mosaics, namespaces, multisignature accounts and a peer-to-peer reputation system. These tools were intended to let users create and manage assets and accounts on the NEM network without relying on a general-purpose smart contract platform.
NEM uses Proof of Importance (PoI) to determine which accounts can help process blocks. The design considers on-chain activity as well as an account’s vested XEM balance, with the aim of rewarding network participation and discouraging influence from being based only on wealth. PoI is distinct from Proof of Work mining and conventional Proof of Stake. NEM’s client software, NIS, is written in Java. XEM is therefore best understood as the currency of a specific blockchain ecosystem, rather than as a general-purpose token with a clearly documented role across many other networks.
## What is XEM used for?
XEM is used as the currency of the NEM network. It can be used to send value between accounts and is associated with activity on the chain, including transactions involving user-created mosaics. NEM also supports namespaces, which provide a way to organize assets and names, and multisignature accounts that require approval from multiple parties. These are network features, not separate services that XEM holders automatically receive.
NEM’s PoI system ties participation in block processing to network activity and vested balances. NEM has commonly described block processing by eligible accounts as “harvesting.” This is different from staking on a Proof of Stake chain, and eligibility or rewards should not be assumed without checking the network’s current rules and status. XEM does not represent company shares, a claim on profits, or a guaranteed right to governance. Its practical usefulness depends on whether people and applications continue to use the NEM network and its tools.
## XEM supply and market information
NEM launched on March 31, 2015. The reported circulating and total supply are both 8,999,999,999 XEM. No maximum supply figure is reported here, so the total supply should not be described as a stated hard cap without checking current protocol information. Supply figures can also differ across trackers or change in how they are reported.
As of November 5, 2026, XEM’s price was about $0.00032, its market capitalization was about $2.9 million, and its reported 24-hour trading volume was about $91,000. These are time-sensitive figures, not fixed properties of the token. Historical prices show substantial movement: XEM’s recorded all-time high was $1.87 on January 6, 2018, and its recorded all-time low was $0.00008482 on September 4, 2015. Past highs and lows do not indicate what the price will do next. A small market capitalization and limited trading activity can also make prices more sensitive to individual trades.
## NEM’s chain and relationship with Symbol
NEM is its own blockchain platform, rather than simply a token issued on Ethereum or another widely used smart contract network. Its mosaic feature lets users create assets within NEM, but that does not mean XEM itself is automatically available on other chains. No separate issued-chain deployments are identified here. If you encounter an asset called XEM on another network, check its contract, issuer and relationship to NEM before treating it as native XEM; a wrapped or bridged token can carry additional risks.
NEM has also been associated with a merge effort involving Symbol, another blockchain platform. That history is relevant when researching the project, but it does not by itself establish the current status of development, migration plans or any relationship between XEM and Symbol’s assets. Before sending funds or using a wallet, confirm that it supports the NEM network and the exact asset you intend to hold. Do not assume that a wallet or exchange’s support for one similarly named asset means it supports native XEM.
## Risks and how to store XEM
XEM carries the risks of a volatile crypto asset, including the possibility of sharp losses, limited liquidity and changing market interest. NEM is an older project, and the future usefulness of its tools depends on ongoing network use, maintenance and development. The project’s association with Symbol can also create confusion about which network, token or migration process is being discussed. Verify current details through official project materials before acting, rather than relying on a token name alone.
For storage, use a wallet that explicitly supports native XEM on NEM. Keep recovery phrases and private keys offline and private; anyone who obtains them may be able to control the funds. Back up the recovery information securely, and test a small transfer if you are unfamiliar with the wallet or address format. Check the destination network and address before sending, since transfers to an incompatible network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Exchange custody is another option, but it means relying on the exchange to safeguard and release the asset.
By the numbers
NEM in numbers
NEM (XEM) is ranked #2,069 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $2.88M and a price of $0.0003197 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($2.88M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was up 0.4% over 7 days, down 42.9% over 30 days, down 72.8% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $1.87, set on Jan 6, 2018.
About 9B XEM are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $47.1K, or 1.6% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

XEM FAQs
What is XEM?
XEM is the cryptocurrency of the NEM blockchain platform. It is used as network currency and is associated with transaction activity and NEM’s Proof of Importance system.
How does NEM’s Proof of Importance work?
NEM uses Proof of Importance, a consensus design that considers on-chain activity and vested balance when determining participation in block processing. It is not the same as Proof of Work mining or conventional Proof of Stake.
How many XEM are there?
The reported circulating and total supply are both 8,999,999,999 XEM. A maximum supply is not specified publicly summarized here, so check current protocol information for any updated details.
Which blockchain does XEM use?
NEM is its own blockchain platform. No separate issued-chain deployments are identified here, so confirm that a wallet or exchange supports native XEM on NEM before depositing or sending it.
How can I store XEM safely?
Use a wallet that explicitly supports native XEM on NEM, and keep its recovery phrase or private keys secure and private. Check the network and address carefully before sending, especially if another service lists a similarly named asset.
What is the market cap of NEM?
As of Nov 6, 2026, NEM had a market cap of about $2.88M, ranking #2,069 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of XEM?
NEM's all-time high is $1.87, reached on Jan 6, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.00008482 (Sep 4, 2015). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of XEM?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 9B XEM were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
