## What is Banano (BAN)?

Banano (BAN) is a cryptocurrency created as a fork of Nano in April 2018. It is designed for sending value between users, with the project describing transactions as instant and feeless. Its playful banana theme and community-oriented distribution are part of its identity, but BAN is still a crypto asset whose value can change sharply. Banano’s developers retained much of Nano’s code while adjusting parameters such as proof-of-work requirements and currency units. The project has also explored additions including Camo Banano, a privacy-focused feature, and MonkeyTalks, an on-chain messaging experiment. These are separate from BAN’s basic use as a transferable currency, and their availability or maturity may vary. Banano is not presented as a token issued on Ethereum or another smart-contract chain; it runs on its own network.

## How the Banano network works

Banano’s network is based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) design inherited from Nano rather than the conventional block-by-block structure used by many cryptocurrencies. The project uses Blake2b as its hashing algorithm. Banano is also associated with Open Representative Voting: users can delegate voting weight to a representative, who participates in network consensus without taking custody of their BAN. The project describes transactions as feeless and fast, though network performance and the experience of using a wallet can depend on current conditions and implementation. Banano’s proof-of-work requirements were adjusted from Nano’s, but this does not make BAN a conventional proof-of-work coin mined through competitive, energy-intensive block production. The network design is intended to support small transfers, including tips and payments. As with any cryptocurrency, users should confirm the receiving address and test unfamiliar wallet workflows with a small amount before transferring more.

## What is BAN used for?

BAN’s main stated role is to move value between users. The project has emphasized accessible onboarding, community distribution, mobile wallets and social-media tip bots, aiming to make it easier for people new to cryptocurrency to try sending and receiving it. Kalium is a mobile wallet associated with the Banano project. Whether BAN is accepted as payment depends on the recipient; it should not be assumed to be widely usable at merchants. The project’s low-friction transfer design may suit small payments or tips, but a feeless transfer does not mean the asset itself is stable or risk-free. Banano has also experimented with Camo Banano for privacy and MonkeyTalks for on-chain messages. These are additional projects or features, not guaranteed services or investment benefits. Check current project information and wallet support before relying on any feature, and do not send BAN to an address on another network unless the wallet explicitly supports that transfer.

## BAN supply and market context

As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating supply was about 1.62 billion BAN and the total supply about 1.92 billion. No maximum supply is specified, so these figures should not be treated as a confirmed cap. The project has described an ongoing free and fair distribution as a focus, but that does not establish how quickly any remaining supply will be distributed. Market figures are snapshots, not fixed properties: BAN was about $0.00045 per coin, with a market capitalization of roughly $722,000 on that date. Its reported 24-hour trading volume was about $218, indicating limited activity in that snapshot. Low trading volume can make it harder to trade larger amounts near a displayed price. Past highs and lows do not predict future performance. Supply distribution, demand, exchange access and overall crypto-market conditions can all affect BAN’s price.

## Risks and storing BAN

BAN has the usual risks of a small, volatile crypto asset. Its price may fall substantially, and limited trading activity can make buying or selling more difficult. A feeless network transfer does not reverse a mistaken or fraudulent payment, so verify addresses and avoid sharing wallet recovery information. Store BAN only in a wallet that explicitly supports the Banano network. Keep recovery phrases offline in a secure place, and beware of fake wallet apps, impersonation and messages promising free tokens in exchange for a deposit. If using a hosted service, understand that the provider may control access to the funds. Banano is a standalone network rather than a token that can automatically be sent across unrelated chains; sending it to an unsupported address or service could result in loss. Privacy features and messaging experiments may have limitations, so do not assume they provide complete confidentiality. These points are general risk information, not investment advice.
