Our verdict on Next Earth

2.0/10

Next Earth was an early map-based metaverse that sold virtual land plots and offered developer tools for dynamic NFTs. Its main strength was a clear concept tying apps to real map locations. The main caveat is decisive: a project update says it has no team or funding and has shut down. It suits only people researching its history or holders deciding what to do with existing land NFTs or NXTT, not new buyers.

What is Next Earth?

Next Earth was a blockchain metaverse built as a digital replica of the Earth. Users bought 10m x 10m plots of land, and developers could build map-based apps tied to locations through its Next Earth OS tools. It was launched in 2021 and introduced its NXTT token in January 2022.

The project is now reported as inactive. A project update on its X profile says it has no active team or funding, that operations have ceased and that it has been shut down. The homepage could not be loaded when this page was prepared.

This page covers how Next Earth worked and what holders of land NFTs or NXTT should keep in mind. It is not a recommendation to buy either.

How Next Earth works

Next Earth presented a map of the Earth split into 10m x 10m tiles. Users bought tiles as NFTs, and a tile gave them a location on the map. One third-party profile says the project reported more than 7 billion square meters of land sold and a community of about 46,000 landowners as of December 2022.

Developers could build on this map through Next Earth OS, an API suite for creating smart contracts and minting dynamic NFTs. Each app was tied to a location, such as a marketing campaign, loyalty program, booking tool or map-based game. The landowner at that location could earn a royalty from the app's platform fee.

The NXTT token tied into this. Part of the platform fees went to buying NXTT, burning some and distributing the rest to stakers. This design only works while apps are running and paying fees, which is why a shutdown breaks it.

Key features

01

Digital Earth replica

The platform offered a map of the Earth powered by Mapbox, where users could buy 10m x 10m plots of virtual land.

02

Next Earth OS (NEOS)

Next Earth OS was an API suite that let Web2 developers build smart contracts and mint dynamic NFTs in languages they already knew.

03

Dynamic NFTs

Dynamic NFTs have metadata that can change with use. Next Earth used them to give land and app assets real-world utility.

04

Landowner royalties

Apps built on NEOS were hosted at a specific place on the map. Owners of that land were eligible for a royalty from the app's platform fee.

05

NXTT staking and burn

The NXTT token was linked to a fee model in which platform fees funded market buybacks, partial burns and staking rewards.

06

3D Connect

A July 2023 update announced a Business Layer MVP and a 3D Connect feature that linked land NFT profiles to 3D environments built on third-party platforms.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear original idea: a map-based metaverse where land location had meaning for apps
  • Developer tools let Web2 programmers mint dynamic NFTs without learning a new language
  • A large landowner community was reported in 2022, with 46,000 landowners according to one third-party profile
  • Landowners were designed to earn royalties from apps hosted on their plots
  • The team was publicly named, with a core team in Budapest according to one third-party profile

Watch out for

  • Operations have reportedly ceased and the project has no active team or funding, according to a project update
  • The homepage could not be loaded, so no live product is confirmed
  • The NXTT token's value and liquidity depend on a project that is no longer operating
  • Land and NFT holders may have no working platform, support or resale market
  • Audits, legal structure and the blockchain deployment are not stated
  • Landowner and sales figures date from 2022 and are not current

Next Earth fees

Fees are not published. The one fee structure described is a platform fee paid by apps built on NEOS. Of that fee, 70% was used to buy NXTT on the market: 10% of those tokens were burnt and 60% went to holders through staking.

Land prices, marketplace fees and trading costs are not stated. Since the project has reportedly ceased operations, current fees cannot be checked on a live platform.

Is Next Earth safe?

The main risk is that the project is reported to have shut down. A project update says there is no active team or funding. Land NFTs, the NXTT token and any staking mechanism depend on a working platform, so their utility and resale value are in doubt.

Public sources do not mention smart-contract audits, custody arrangements or a legal entity. Holders should verify contract addresses independently and be careful with phishing links, which often target users of abandoned projects. This is not financial advice, and token prices are volatile.

5 steps

How to get started with Next Earth

  1. 1

Read the project update on its official X profile to confirm the current status before doing anything.

  2. 2

Do not buy land or NXTT expecting a working platform, since operations have reportedly ceased.

  3. 3

If you already hold land NFTs or NXTT, check the wallet or exchange where they are held and see what markets still list them.

  4. 4

Use a non-custodial wallet and confirm any contract address from a trusted source before interacting with it.

  5. 5

Treat any site or message offering to restore, claim or upgrade Next Earth assets with suspicion and do not connect your wallet.

Who Next Earth is for

This page is for people who already hold Next Earth land or NXTT, or who are researching how map-based metaverse projects worked. New users looking for an active metaverse or a place to put funds should look elsewhere, as the project is reported to have ceased operations.

Next Earth FAQs

What is Next Earth?

Next Earth was a blockchain-based metaverse built as a digital replica of the Earth. Users bought 10m x 10m plots of land, and developers could build map-based apps on it through the Next Earth OS tools.

Is Next Earth shut down?

A project update on its X profile says the project has no active team or funding, that operations have ceased and that it has been shut down. Anyone holding land or tokens should treat the platform as inactive.

What is the NXTT token?

NXTT was the native token, announced in January 2022. According to a third-party description, applications on the platform paid a fee, 70% of which was used to buy NXTT on the market. Of that, 10% of tokens were burnt and 60% went to holders through a staking protocol. With operations reportedly ended, that model should not be relied on.

Can I still sell my Next Earth land?

Public sources do not say whether land can still be sold or used. With the project reportedly shut down, resale is uncertain and depends on whatever secondary markets still list the NFTs.

Who founded Next Earth?

One third-party profile says the platform was launched in 2021 by Gabor Retfalvi, with Attila Kiraly and David Taylor credited as co-founders and a core team in Budapest, Hungary. That profile dates from December 2022 and may be out of date.
